You obviously didn't read my post. I have nothing to say to you. Read it again i guess because i said I'm not an astronomer and i said they manoeuver the ISS whenever its in threat of colliding with Debris around Earth. So how is Comet Elenin Going to hit the ISS.

Obvious Trolls Need to learn common sense.

I did read your post hence the reason I responded to you. Well I has something to say to you. I don't need to read it again, since I have the uncanny ability to retain information. I am glad that we agree that you are not an astronomer. Since we agree on that you have no way of knowing if a comet would hit the ISS or not which is why I stated that you had no idea what you were talking about. Lastly, you spelled maneuver wrong.(HINT-When its shows a red scribble underline it means you spelled it wrong.) Obviously you should learn how to spell or at the very least use the spell check feature before you start calling people trolls.

All of that about the spelling and spell check feature and your second sentence is" Well I has something to say to you." We can correct spelling but leave grammar at the door huh?

[mildly off-topic]

Good point.

Grammar is a dying art.

Also, perhaps the silly-billy should remember that in the UK and the USA we occasionally spell words differently...(!!!) Then there's the frustrating issue with many online sites, whereby we cannot choose to utilise a British spell-checker. Words like 'maneuver' (US spelling used there obviously) are quite tricky to remember in the British 'stylee' (bit of slang there, not misspelled I promise), and as a result they can be easily misspelled by even the most fluent of writers.

Comet Elenin is coming, and one way or other we'll know in October. Only 'five seconds' remaining...

It's the Final Countdown folks...

I don't want to be a downer but if a comet is going to hit, you only need two things: a really good bottle of whiskey, and a lawn chair. That's what I would to. Between the thermal flash, probable planet wide magnitude 9 earthquake, or the mile high tsunamis moving at the speed of sound, there isn't much more you can do to prepare for it. I am going to get up on the roof and watch the whole thing, and see if I can kill the whole bottle before the comet kills me.

Found this interesting story on Fox today

www.foxnews.com...Asteroid Trip ... Underwater?

Yesterday they had another story. Titled Big Asteroid Approaches
Story

See Screen Shot below. (Is there a reason why uploaded images only show link instead of the image?)

One could imagine, with a wild imagination that this comet is a planet destroyer. What happened to Mars? Looks like it once had an atmosphere and surface water. Now no. One side is blasted with craters. Could something like Elenin have done this on a close pass?

No, you say. The comet's tail is just dust. Didn't it just pass through an asteroid belt? Is Elenin just a comet?

What if it is something we have not seen before. Not a comet, planet, star, asteroid or spaceship? But what is left? Did Sherlock Homes say something like, "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however implausible is the truth"? (could this be way above top secret?)

I guess they are planning for a deep impact kind of situation.

There is a huge impact structure on mars called the Hellas basin, the body that created it most likely stripped away a large portion of the atmosphere' and if there was life on the planet when it hit, it would have been laregely exterminated.

Never heard of a southern slang huh? Why don't you try and comment on the topic instead of focusing on my grammar. My apologizes that my choice of words that I used in MY OWN sentence do not meet your high expectations. I will try much harder the next time to accommodate you...

It wasn't bad grammar friend, sorry I used southern slang and did not give a full explanation that I was doing so. You also spelled the word utilize wrong, looks like you should work on spelling that word correctly before calling me a silly billy because here in the U.S. it makes you look like the other word for a donkey. Is that translation the same in British?
Just wondering, and I think we will know about more about Comet Elenin before October.

DEAR GOD.

I did not spell the word 'utilize' wrong, I just used the BRITISH spelling. Take some time to appreciate where the Americanised form of the language actually came from.

Most often, as with 'Americanised' and 'Utilised', 'Hypothesised', etc, we use an S instead of a Z.

how off-topic are we now? Sorry mods but it was too charming to resist.

ETA - donkey? Seriously? You just totally pwn'ed yourself dude.

We could do without all this stuff about spelling and so forth.
We need to see if we can dig up better data about this "comet."

If the guys with the really big telescopes are going to shut down their communication lines on this subject, then all we have left is the amateur astronomers, and they can only tell us so much about a body that small.

It has been a very long time since we have had an extinction-level event on this planet. I don't think anybody in an official position has a clue how to handle these rumors that Elenin might be dangerous. We can always hope that at least someone who has good data will decide that it is better to make it public.

I wish such people were more abundant!

Ok, so I am in half way through the movie DEEP IMPACT and for some odd reason I decided to pause it and get on ATS. This threat is what I find and Im Panicking. I hate the fact that the name is ELEnin..(like in the movie - Extinction Level EVENT!!). I keep doing some research and I found out about HONDA..which will come even closer than ELENIN. THese Two OBjects, don't know what to call them, will be sooo close at the same time. I can't imagine how the Earth will be affected. I am truly SCARED. (Now to finish the movie)
On the ELENING.org website there is a diagram which shows its trajectory (including HONDA)

Personally, I'm finding this whole spelling/grammar thing more interesting than the comet thing... A spelling nazi who's completely unaware of the international ways to spell various words beyond his own southern-drawl backyard dictionary is friggin' hilarious.

As for this Elenin stuff, the only reason people are freaked about it is because of the whole "big planet coming our way" 2012 thing. Otherwise, nobody would even be passing a sniff about it... like every other comet/asteroid that passes by our front door every year.

If people only knew just how many NDE's hit our neighbourhood every year, they'd all drop dead from the daily stress.

What? I think perhaps you misread. That's approx. 43,000 miles, not 43,000 feet.

Regardless, it seems to me that that's an extremely finely calculated result (0.0004617 au) for something that far away. I mean, there are a number of variables that have to be taken into account; it just seems so excessively *accurate*....
that's what i was thinking

At the risk of damaging my new-found good relationship with Weedwhacker, I totally agree.

Sorry WW, but something's 'off' regarding this Comet Elenin thing. In fact, you might be the guy to clear it up...

Have NASA (or anyone) released a good image of the comet? I've been dipping in and out of the threads, but I have yet to see an image, and I would be most surprised if the PTB don't have one. If it had been cleared up to anyone's satisfaction, surely the topic would have died off a bit by now???

In fact, speaking of the PTB - it would be an utterly irresponsible thing, not to get a photo of a 'long-orbit object' (however 'wimpy') that may pass so (relatively) close to us in the near future. Is there a picture in circulation, or is it 'classified' at the present time? If it is 'classified', then it begs the question, 'Why?'

If this comet is the 'wimp' NASA claims it to be, then surely releasing a picture with coordinates and current distance would be acceptable, if only to dispel the conspiracy theories? Then we (an informal fraternity of ATS'ers) could club together, buy a great telescope, and have a look for ourselves.

As I say, I'm not trying to pick an argument - I really want to know whether there is any picture in circulation, if only 'on the inside', that you may have heard. I'm asking you (WW) specifically, as if anyone is likely to know (if only in order to counter the 'conspiracy nuts') it's you. Please also check the U2U I sent a moment ago, regarding this topic, and others.

Many thanks.

x 1,000,000

Made me chuckle too.

But really, if this is such a non-issue, why haven't NASA cleared it up yet? Are they just allowing the hype and fear-mongering to get everyone into a state of fear and/ or confusion? Perhaps having a populace on the edge is beneficial to their future plans (WW3 anyone???)

Cheers..

NASA, no one, has the power to "stop" the fear mongers from repeating the same ignorant claims. The data is out there, if people stop 'believing' the ridiculous *doom and gloom* nonsense....

The JPL/NASA small body database site....it's been up for months, now. Someone else, forget the thread, posted link to all sorts of astronomical data, compiling thousands of observations and calculations used to further refine the orbital trajectory of Elenin.

Also, on the JPL site, it has data and numbers regarding the orbit of Elenin....actually, they are confirmed that it is NOT in "orbit", per se, not a recurring orbit. It is hyperbolic in nature, meaning it will not return....it will continue out of the Solar System indefinitely, after looping around the Sun. Several hundreds of thousand of years from now, may enter another solar system....and cause their version of ATS message boards to light up with doomsayers.....

Just in case you're feeling scared still, make sure you don't take this site too seriously. Most if it's opinion or people wanting attention and rarely does anything on this site that is predicted occur (excluding the Japan earthquake, that was the only thing I've seen predicted), and this thread doesn't offer much proof, just a bunch of NASA is evil lines.

I imagine the month of October will pass without any problem, and then the hundreds of "December 21, 2012 is coming!" threads will start to appear in response to the next big thing. If I'm wrong, then why panic anyway? Enjoy your life to the fullest, a comet might get you in October but a bus or pack of dogs could get you tomorrow.
