Thanks for the info but I have a couple of question's if that's OK.

1: What is firesteel and is it used for and how do I use it.
2: what are MRE's.

1. Firesteel is something similar to your magnesium strips, its used to create large amount of sparks to start a fire. Heres a video Firesteel

2. MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat) are packaged military issued field food. You can get them online, I have a buddy whos a medic in the Army. So he supplied me with MRE's and first aid supplies.

I know portable water filters are expensive, but in my opinion and many others, it is the most important self sustaining and life preserving equipment you can have. Its the most expensive tool in my BOB and I wouldn't skimp out on it.

More expensive than your guns and ammo? Heck, my survival knife was more expensive than the straw. What I do not currently have is a long term plan atm. Mainly due to my recent divorce.

Well, I do have a revolver but I didn't buy it, in fact I had totally forgotten about it. Thanks for reminding me. And my survival knife is an old MKIII Navy issue. But my filter was around 150 dollars. And since I consider water to be my highest priority I bought one that would last me a very long time without replacing the filter.

Thanks. For quick survival cooking I will use my GI canteen cup. I also have a mess kit for more involved cooking, but would likely not break that out for the first few days. I have enough "quick food" to get me by at the start.

My hatchet and survival knife does a fine job of digging holes.

I've been nagging my other half for ages about getting a few chickens but she's having none of it I'm afraid.
Luckily there is a egg factory not far from me so if the SHTF I can do a bit of poaching there.

Put you foot down and get them chickens, MAN up.

NO.... seriously,,,,, get some chickens.

Here is what I have Survival Straw At under $30, it seems to be the best available. I would be interested in field testing the "Life Straw" if I could get one.

In addition to a quality compass such as the guy in the video had, perhaps some topographical maps of where you might find yourself bugging out to. That way if you come across something like an impassable ravine, you might be able to skirt around it. Also a map could help with setting up the most defensible hiding spot in an area, or picking secondary sites to bug out to if your main choice is compromised.

That's a good idea ,the problem is I've never read a map in my life I wouldn't know where to start.
Depending on the circumstances I'm planning on staying in my home for as long as possible.
But if we have to get out to I'm planning on going to some Island in wales I lived on when I was a kid.
And know the way there of the top of my head.
But I suppose learning how read maps would be huge advantage so I better start learning.
