The attitudes to people on welfare displayed in this thread are pretty sad considering the current financial climate. It may not be long before many on here who turn their noses up and look down to those on welfare, find themselves in the que waiting for a hand out. Despite what the right wing media tell you , not everyone on welfare chose this way of life.

This country seems to be getting more and more ridiculous every year.

So let me get this straight, Americans can buy all the cigarettes, beer, wine, liquor, and countless types of prescription pills that they can get their hands on.

But God forbid they smoke a little marijuana and all you HYPOCRITES come out of the woodwork and SELF RIGHTEOUSLY scream to take away the TINY bit of help they receive and kick them out on the street.

What a bunch of hypocrites you guys are.

Once again America proving to bee as$ back wards.

Star for you!!! I do not understand the thought process of anyone, especially here on ATS who thinks one more government intrusion on anyone for any reason is a good idea.

Well to be fair and avoid discriminatory actions, I would think it only fair to include all federal and state employees as well.

And another thought is this could really get even more expensive due to the mandatory rehab needed to reinstate the checks. Do you really think these people will go without the money, heck no. They will just become more expensive. Though I don't think it's bad idea, but I do think it will backfire with expense.

So what about the poor strugglers who occasionally might have a smoke of weed just to relax hey? You advocate putting them out on the streets too?

Are you pro-torture are you?

I missed this bit of genius from you. Really? So, you are really advocating that a drug test is the equal to torture?
Man, I dont know what they have in your country, but that s**t must be strong. Puff away!

No, I am advocating that cutting welfare recipients payments off and putting them on the streets is torture.

It really wasn't hard to figure out what I was saying mate, but you had to go and twist my words to suit your own ignorant reality didn't you.

EDIT: And please stop going around accusing everyone who disagrees with you of taking drugs. Its complete bollocks and just adds to your own ignorance.

Heaven forbid that any of you judgemental idiots ever loses his job, or in the unlikely event any of you is a woman, her husband!
Why not do as New Zealand is planning to do, and go the eugenics route? (Oh, I forgot - y'all had eugenics laws before the German Nazis did...)

Wrong.

They are free to leave the streets at any time they choose.

You simply cannot choose to leave a torture session.

Right, so someone with no money can choose to leave the streets if they wish.

What planet do you live on?

All it takes is determination and motivation. Hell, sleeping in the streets very well could be the proper motivation some of the parasites who choose to abuse the unconstitutional welfare system need.

Stop doing heroin, and get a job.

Yes you can choose to leave the streets. Get you free education and use it. Actually most better off people I know do not have a college degree, but it certainly doesn't hurt to at least have a GED. Start your own micro-business. Cut grass, wash windows or cars. You do not need to work for someone else. Get up, go out, and make it happen. Quite living a victim mentality and start living a winning mentality. Yes some people need a hand up when things go south, but dont use it for a lifestyle crux.

wow, really? This is profiling at it's worst. So... basically anyone who is on welfare is suspect of being a drug user/abuser? The day something like this passes is the day I move out of this sad excuse for a country! To me this is tantamount to saying all black people are dumb and only good enough to be slaves, or all germans are killer nazis... all wefare recipients are drug abusers.... low, low low people!

Do you know how many supposedly "upstanding" well to do citizens I know of who pop perscription pills and drink a bottle of wine every night and sometime every DAY even while WORKING and supposedly being productive? How about this, how about just give the government the right to drug test anyone at anytime!!! How's about that? That sounds like a fair law doesn't it?

I'm out... disgusted by this!

Quite obviously you have never been in that situation or you would know how ridiculous your statement is.

Stop drinking and beating your wife. See how easy that is to make up BS?

Cut grass? With what? The lawn mower they cannot afford because you cut their payments off? Wash windows? With what? The same money you deny them?

Use some common bloody sense mate and stop ruining others lives just because you got it lucky.

Why don't you tell that to the 14 million Americans who are currently unemployed.

Then tell the over 1 million Americans who are currently homeless.

"Hey, just suck it up you drug addicts, living on the street will do you good"

You have no compassion, you have no heart for your fellow man. God forbid you or your family should ever fall on hard times.

You are living in an idealized fantasy.

Oh and by the way, Do you know how many of the homeless in America are VETERANS? Quite alot.

I'm sure I'll get flamed, but don't care at this point. I'm all for drug testing in welfare recipients. You will not disrespect the back breaking work I do by using my taxes to get high..simple as that. Welfare should be a stopover on your way to getting back on your feet, not a free for all to party. I have no problem with people being on welfare, but you will either spend the money properly, or suck it up and earn your own...at which point, buy all the drugs you want.

When I lost my job in 2009, I had to suck it up and find another. Guess what..all that was available at the time was a crappy paying, long hours, back breaking housecleaning job that only paid 1/3 of what I was used to..what did I do? Took a second job a fast food place in the evenings to try to make up the rest. I worked 15 hours/day to bring in what my family needed to stay on our feet financially. After a year of doing that, our financial situation was better and I was able to quit one of those jobs. Another year and I was able to quit both and go back to what I was doing before I lost my job initially. Not ONCE did I consider going on welfare....there ARE jobs to be found out there, do they suck YES...will you possibly have to work more than one...YES. So DO it. I'm almost 40 years old, have a college education, and three children...I flipped burgers to put food in their mouths and keep a roof over there heads. Do not tell me there are no other options besides welfare for lots of people.

Yes, there are always exceptions. But do not insult me with sitting on your butt doing drugs whining about no jobs, with my hard earned tax dollars when my kids are wearing second hand shoes, going without extra curricular activities for 2 years, and having to give up the fun family outings we used to be able to afford.

If you want to rely on the government to support you, then be prepared to do what they tell you. If you don't like it, tough, get a job and support your own habits
