I like the post by metropolis. I'm finding it hard to believe how Americans are responding to this. The accident occurred in Japan, and they are running for their lives to buy some silly pills here because of the FEAR and only fear that some sort of radiation cloud might reach them.
Instead of running to the pharmacy to stock up on supplies for yourself, how about shipping them over for some homeless people who actually may currently need them?
Fear = control. The media and government are controlling you wether you choose to believe it or not.

On a side note, about a conversation I had with a friend yesterday, we should be donating to help the cause.
The top 2 box office hits the past week gained 58.2 million combined. Imagine if we/they all chose to donate our $10 to a relief fund instead of going to see some crappy hollywood film? It's mind boggling. But here we are, complaining about the price of a pill that we may never need lifetime.

Hi and welcome to ATS.
Is there any way of buying these anti radiation pills off you other than on Amazon?
If so, could you give us an alternative contact point to put in orders?

It's called supply and demand. This Japan nuke "crisis" is just more proof of how the masses in America just ignorantly and blindly follow along like a bunch of brainless sheep. The news is embellishing the "crisis" in Japan for ratings. There is absolutely no threat to the US. None...Zero...Zip. You are exposed to radiation on a daily basis just by walking outside in the sunshine. I just wish I would have bought stock in a company that produces Potassium Iodide because I would be rich because the easiest way to get rich is to take advantage of stupid people. Those pills that everyone is running out to buy can cause other serious health problems... they should only be taken as a last resort, when exposure to lethal doses of radiation is imminent. By the way, I speak from 13 years of experience working around nuclear reactors, I'm not just some guy with an uninformed opinion.

Since there are folks out there purchasing this stuff, the CDC has some good info on Potassium Iodide (KI). Beware, it's a .gov website so I'm sure they'll start tracking you.

emergency.cdc.gov...

Overdosing on KI can cause serious illness or death. Also, beware the scam artists who are packaging God knows what and selling to the panicked masses.

You are all criminals. What, wait....thats right you all want a product for cheap that no one needed four months ago, and now everyone wants it. I can not believe the amount of bitching and crying that goes on for a web sight that is suppose to have their # together.

Really are you complaining about "price gouging" on a product that never should be needed? and if you thought it would be needed then you should of had it already...

This is a fascinating thread!!!!!

Not because of the subject matter found within, but because it's so instructive concerning how humans will interact with one another under certain conditions.

ATS is such an AMAZING petri dish!

Quoting myself, because the point I made is still so relevant in this thread.

Ya Snooz Ya Loose.....

This IS NOT price gouging. This is good old fashioned "supply and demand" at work...The American way!

You procrastinated till the disaster hit then you want someone to feel sorry that you have to pay for your sin of non-preparedness. No tears from me, Doc. Think on this:

The time to prepare is before disaster strikes.

I bought the Iosat tabs for my wife and myself some months ago, as part of my "Bug Out Bag". I paid $10.95 for 14 pills x two. You can get them for that price, as well at:

beprepared.com...

Of course, there will be a 3-4 week delay, as they are out of stock (like everyone is).

If you must have it NOW, try eBay. Here is an example of what it has been going for there:

cgi.ebay.com...

Good luck!!!

Is this a book? Since when does Amazon sell supplement pills?

They do the "new and used from X price" with things other than books?

I can't keep up...

EDIT: Used Pills??????

At the Google shopping, the price is still $5 to $20.
www.google.com...

On the other hand..
..you doesn't need any Potassium Iodide.
Because there's no radiation leaks here.

Read about Potassium Iodide, here:

Companys like this lick their chops after a crisis like this. Just another company profiting from fear.

It's funny. I had a look on the website of a company I often use as a chemical supplier for my lab today - for interest's sake. They sell 95% potassium iodide for $150/100gm. Not that you'd want to consume it in such form, but it's interesting none-the-less.

I also went and had a look at the nuke-pills site and they in fact still have Iosat listed at $9.99USD for a 14 pack, albeit out of stock.

In any case, don't you guys have iodised table salt in the USA? Otherwise, kelp and certain other sea-foods are rich in iodine, as are plants that are grown in iodine enriched soils. Many multivitamin formulations also contain decent amounts of iodine.

If you're that desperate for it, start looking elsewhere. Potassium iodide tablets are clearly a limited commodity at the present moment and there are plenty of alternative sources.

I dont know why you americans are even buying that crap. I live in UK and after the worst nuclear disaster on the planet (Chernobyl) im still here .

This is just typical of american pharma making the worst out japan crisis to make a fast buck.

i read the site from the OP. its only at amazon the prices are being gouged, and whoever was the seller. nukepill.com or whatever the website was is still selling if for $9.99, although they will be out of stock for a while i suspect.

The person above said it perfectly. It's called supply and demand. There is no need to explain how this works. I don't mind if you complain about high prices, but you better not turn around and sing praises of the free market and capitalism, because then your just a hypocrite.

And I have a feeling that those who whine and complain about prices wouldn't ever question the capitalism.

Yes.
1 mg = 1/1000 of a gram.
1 mcg = 1/1000000 of a gram.

There's supply and demand, and then there is outright gouging. I'd say going from $10 to over $300 is certainly an example of the latter....

Though I do think it's unnecessary for people in North America to be buying these pills.

Very true. Just wait until the crisis is over, and then get some to prepare for any possible future event closer to home.

Yep!

When the accident in Chernobyl happened.
I was living in Sweden.
The wind and rain came our way.
The rain contained radio active Cesium.

The mushrooms in the forest, and the deers eating them got the most of the radiation.
Some as much as 45 000 Bq (becquerel) per kilogram.
But most of it (I mesured around 10 samples per day, for a few years) was under 10 000 Bq / kg.
The average was less than 2 000 Bq / kg.

This lasted for 5 years. Until the half time of the CS had gone down to under 100 Bq / kg, in wildlife and plants.

Although, none of that radiation made any damage to me or any of those in that area.
It need to be far more radiation to make damage.

This is not price gouging??? If this isn't, what is?

Demand goes up and the price rises along with it. The price should not shoot through the roof for a product that could help save someone's life!

This is preying on people in the most immoral way. Outside your house you have a bottle of water for sale for $1, a car passes by, but doesn't stop to by it. As they get a few feet away from you their car spontaneously explodes into flames. They are trapped inside and the bottle of water can put out the flames. (I know a bottle of water wouldn't put out a large car fire)

You run to the car with your bottle of water and see that they want to give you $1 for it, but instead of helping them out, you say, ' sorry the price is now $200'

They can't afford it, so they die.

I suppose it is just the way of supply and demand... no wonder we are in the shape we are in world-wide.
