You are quite right.....but are those in CHCH fully aware of all the permits handed out for exploration of petroleum, coal and rare minerals within their area? When they said CHCH won't ever be the same again; they were'nt wrong. As for John Key claiming they will rebuild CHCH; he was'nt wrong either. CHCH is about to become a major mining town for both on land and offshore drilling.

Wellington is under the Indo-Australian plate whereas CHCH comes under the Pacific plate. God forbid if a large quake hit Wgton, they are not without some old buildings but the enormity of glass used in the new buildings and homes built amongst rocky and soily hills will be the biggest killer.

We can prepare for these things to happen because we can know the likelihood and take measures. Unfortunately we have a system in place that ignores good scientific advice and rationalises on the basis of profit rather than the safety of citizens.

Indeed!, planned obsolescence has played a major role in the sub quality of buildings and structures and is wrenching to know that this economic system thrives on saving money, cutting corners for profit gain putting human concern 2nd if ever there was any in the first place. If towns/cities used the best materials in conjunction with science and technology with out the burden of "how much will it cost" but rather "do we have the resources", we would see a more prepared city/town with possibly less damage then what CHCH is going through.

Time to eradicate this obsolete economic social structure it is fail.........

According to this interactive graphic, there have been aftershocks/quakes of intensity 6 and 7 in the last hour.

I don't know how accurate this is. Is there anyone who can comment who is in the area at the moment?

You may be reading it wrong. Look for Magnitude and Depth. Magnitude is the measure of strength. There's been nothing in NZ bigger than the earthquake magnitude 6.3 (an average of the quakes around the peak) since the day of the event on the 22nd. Nothing like it.

The shallowness and the very close proximity of the epicentre to the city really ratcheted up the violence of the quake on the 22nd.

Even at around 4.5 magnitude as some have been today it is still a jolt because they are shallow.

Geonet only gives intensity.

Different scale I guess.

I live in Belfast, just north of Christchurch. We were one of the lucky ones, our house was practically unscathed. One of our friends was told 6 months for power, a year for water and two years for sewerage. Family living in the eastern parts of the city are even worse off, homes destroyed and they were told "Don't hold your breath" for power, water and sewerage.

For the past two days I've been busy at my parents work building wheelbarrows, tying them to a trailer and delivering them. We have built over a hundred wheelbarrows in two days, the equivalent of two weeks normally. And this afternoon we received an order for a further one thousand wheelbarrows.

Discussing with my cousin today he speculated that the damage may have been worsened because the two major quakes have hit on opposite sides of the city impacting buildings from multiple directions.

An uncle that's staying with us was driving around earlier today and told me that some roads have been marked '4wd vehicles only'. He could see metre high undulations in the road and had to detour around them.

The airport is of course up and running again, they have been flying 10,000 people per day out of the city.

The latest bit of news I saw today stated that a subsurface rupture extends for 17 kilometers between Taylor's Mistake and Halswell.

There was a story shortly after the quake that three emergency generators, powering landlines in 1500 homes, were stolen. I am pleased to say that the culprits were caught, denied bail and sent immediately to prison today.

Thanks Greenfruit.

The energy increases drastically with just a small movement up the scale, doesn't it.

A lot of strong 3's and some 4's. They definitely don't need for these to become stronger.

Where is a good place to get updates on how the community is coming back together - what is being done for the people and city at this time. What are their needs?

someone said in this thread or somewhere else that it must be a really religious city if it is called Christchurch. No, NZ is just about as religious as Sweden and CHCH is no different. However, FYI, Christchurch is named after a place in England and of course, it was the English which widely pioneered the country. Being NZ is viewed as the 'newest country on earth' by British colony standards. However, I believe NZ was an Atlantean island and where is Atlantis, ANTARCTICA!
