There are many many people like you in this world, that have come from living a country life to living a city life due to a job. I have a bunch of relatives living in rural areas still, so I go back to my roots often.

In a serious SHTF scenario, there will eventually be tribes of marauders. Hundreds, even thousands of armed fighters taking what they want by force. And there will be those working and sweating on their land to provide for their families and all of it can be taken away in a heartbeat no matter how prepared they are.

All you have to do is look at history or go to Africa or Afghanistan to see how people protect their land.

They don't. They can't.

Eh, most of the city folk will be dead anyway, you might have a few trickle in but unless they are well prepared, they will die soon as well. It will be tough enough for country folk to survive.

There is a difference between hard and tedious work. As for wandeing and getting shot, some of those country folk forget that Rand McNally doesnt supply private property lines on thier maps, so if someone was coming from a direction and happen across a field of crops, they may just get shot on the way to barter with the owner of that field. "Damn, that slicker I just shot coulda welded my plow, OOPS".

Mountain folk are living near fault lines, you may need to re-think that statement. If Earthquakes hit the fan, it will be those that are the first to go.

Firstly, you don't know me or what I'm capable of or how I ave been trained in the past. Those that make it that far won't be the toughest, they'll be the luckiest. As for me being greedy... no I am not!! I will share, but I'll only share if those that do come will put in the hard yards and earn it ( I already know most of them won't).

Also I think you underestimate the strength, toughness, training, knowhow & and numbers of the people living out here.

Errr nah, thats not how it works m8. nearest fault line to me is over 100km aaway down in the plains, near the coast. My mountain homeland became inactive 100,000's of years ago.

Chances are, if a city folk had the brains to ESCAPE the city, survive the slew of check points, chemical attacks, and random roving bands of survivor gangs. By the time they make it to YOUR house, theyd be so hungry Im sure you could work out a kind of barter trade with them. If anything, kill them AFTER theyve proved themselves more mouth, than laboring hands.

I also think it should be noted that in general if you are not open to moving out to the total boondocks you can take my path with my partner as we plan to move in a couple years to a smaller sized (but decent) city on the outskirts. Plenty of land but it's still only 10 minutes to get food and there's general creature comforts. There's also plenty of independent minded people who know how to work that land and wouldn't be toast.

The general rule on an area's survivability will be based on the population density. Generally that corresponds to how many "creature comforts" are in one area. Also areas with larger population density (think NYC LA Chicago) are more prone to riots and unrest. If you live in a city with 5000 people instead of 150000000 you will obviously have less of an issue with rioting and generally people in smaller rural cities are used to doing more for themselves.

And if you had a strong back and weren't afraid of callouses you'd be welcome to share our food, shelter and water.
I have a thread on ATS called Community Survival - Looking beyond the chaos and it pretty much describes what you said about banding together.

edit on 7/1/2011 by SeenMyShare because: fixed a typo

And I appreciate that sentiment. I really don't understand why everyone in this thread assumes you are hostile--the fact is it doesn't matter if you're from city or country as long as you're able to contribute in a situation like this. The bottom line is if the SHTF we can stop worrying about "cities" and "towns" and "country" and "urban" and "rural" because those are just INFRASTRUCTURES...after all the power goes off and the water stops and the trash stops running and the gas stations supermarkets are all closed it's going to be able SURVIVING. It doesn't matter where you're at. If you have something to bring to the table post-SHTF then I'm positive you will find a group of people to work this out with (people congregate). And food water and shelter will be shared or even built! But if you can't do anything to help others why the hell would you expect them to help you?

Yeah, I think the original poster's main message was a wise one, get out of the city now or you're dead, buy some cheap rural land, build a cabin, sell the house, etc. For many it's not practical, but the original poster reminds us that society is very thin when it is virtually every man for himself. I think if you are in a city with 5-10,000 inhabitants with quick access to secluded areas, you definitely have some advantage over those who could be trapped like rats in a "Katrina-like" situation where the government steps in to finish you off, er...I mean help.

I see a recurring theme over and over here on ATS, and that's the number of people who will "head to the hills". I can tell you that if that is your plan you best be getting your destination location pinpointed and arranging for rent or purchase and shelter now. If the SHTF many of us already in the country/hills/boonies will not take kindly to a bunch of city folk pouring in and squatting on our farmlands, in our woods, and on our mountains acting as if they have the right to be there..

Now is the time to find that wilderness location and secure it for yourself. Don't think that those of us already in the rural locations will welcome you with open arms. Its nearly as dangerous for bug outers in the wilds as it will be in the cities, except in the wilds you'll be faced with folk who know how to live there, know the area well, and will in most cases use deadly force to protect it.

In that case, don't come knocking in my city then. We will hoard the goods and protect them with guns. You think your farm tractors will keep running without gas? You need replacement shoes when yours wear out? Too bad, we will just shoot you when you come to town.

OR, perhaps after shtf we could all actually start acting like a community and help each other out. Give it some thought.

Some people just don't have common sense and its just too bad that these sheeple will just get hurt worse. Its best to stay at where you know the best and that maybe in the city also. So before you wonder into the woods, know your own backyard first.

10 STEPS TO TAKE BACK OUR COUNTRY

1. LEAVE YOUR PREJUDICES AT HOME......EVERYONE NEEDS TO COME TOGETHER QUICKLY AND PEACEFULLY (GANGS, CLUBS, RELIGIONS, POLITICS, ETC.) WE ARE ALL AMERICANS AND WITH OUR BROTHERS, SISTERS, FATHERS, MOTHERS, RELATIVES IN THE US MILITARY, WE CAN TAKE THIS COUNTRY BACK. DON'T LET THE POWERS TO BE SEPERATE US!!!!!!!
A. OUR ENEMY IS NOT THE GOVERNMENT, IT IS THE PEOPLE THAT ARE IN CONTROL OF THE GOVERNMENT THEY NEED TO BE REMOVED PEACEFULLY.

2. RECOMMEND THAT REP. RON PAUL FROM TEXAS BE NAMED INTERIM PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND DISSOLVE THE FED AND THE IRS AND CONTROL ALL MAJOR BANKS WITH THE FULL BACKING OF THE US MILITARY (OUR FAMILIES).
A. RE-ESTABLISH THE THREE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT ACCORDING TO THE US CONSTITUTION.

3. ESTABLISH A NEW CURRENCY BACKED BY GOLD AND SILVER TO BE DEVELOPED WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR.

4. NO MORE TAXES EXCEPT STATE AND LOCAL WTH THE DESOLVEMENT OF THE FED AND THE IRS, EMPLOYERS WILL HAVE THE MONEY TO HIRE EVERYONE

5. NO MORE FREE RIDES, WELFARE, ETC GET BACK TO WORK AND KEEP WHAT YOU MAKE

6. FLAT SALES TAX TO BE DEVELOPED TO PAY OUR DEBT.

7. NO LAWYERS ALLOWED TO HOLD PUBLIC OFFICE

8. USE AVAILABLE TECHNOLOGY TO REVAMP OUR ENTIRE ENERGY NEEDS

9. ESTABLISH A 3 COUNTRY OPEN BORDERS AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE US, CANADA AND MEXICO.
A. ENABLES MEMBERS FROM ALL COUNTRIES WITHIN THESE BORDERS TO TRAVEL FREELY AND LIVE, WORK, PLAY AND BE FREE.

10. MEXICO AND CANADA WOULD HAVE TO ADOPT OUR BILL OF RIGHTS.

IT CAN HAPPEN!!!!

Cities become prisons when you apply one word; SIEGE. With Chemical weapons and synthetic steel and flesh eating organisms. That coveted ten story high rise just ensures you're buried ten stories above ground.

as do i. my rural friends say "oh hey look at mr. imma nerd and live in the city" and my city friends say "ur kinda hardcore for a nerdy guy" lol, i have pride for where i come from, and for what i've worked for to attain for myself in the city. however i could have never survived in the city was it not for the self reliance skills i learned in the country and i doubt that i would be as successful in life as i am (not rich just happy) if it were not for what the city offered. we can all help each other and we will all help each other, that doesnt mean we should go into the crucible of species ascension with naive belief that everything is butterflies and dandilions. We should all do what we can to care for us and our families before looking to others to put theirs in danger to help us out. fight or flight is a built in biological response and it doesnt matter how good natured you are, if things are really bad and ur protecting ur family, i think its with in anyone's fallibility to shoot first and ask questions later.

We (and I am female for those still guessing) already have multiple locations secured! So if we have to bug out we already HAVE ahead of time locations that we have a right to be at to go to.

if shtf like you are talking about, there won't be any rights to anything anymore. Land rights are a byproduct of governmental authority which protects your land. Better get ready to shift with the new paradigm. I think you might be underestimating the ensuing chaos.

I'll be ready to work, I bring skills in agriculture and horticulture. I have supplies, grit and a sharp mind. If I don't find my own piece of land someone will want me working at theirs.

One thing you are right about though, is that land will be owned by whoever is sitting there and can protect it. A property deed won't mean a thing though.

What good are skills when ignorant hillbillies will shoot you before you have a change to show those skills? Its threads like this that bring to light that some would rather shoot first then show signs of civility. I too have paperwork proving exceptional skill in horticulture despite my location. At least this thread points where NOT to go to try and barter goods and skills.

Ahhh...a fellow illinoisian lol maybe we should hook up when shtf, I have a lot to more to bring to the table than simple agriculture. Like mechanical and electrical engineering and advanced knowledge of hydroponics, a useful skill in the event of nuclear fallout. Lets see the farmers grow crops in that mess.
