Good points. I guess those who are this threads detractors haven't bothered reading the entire replies within.

A lot of posters to this thread don't realize that the body adjusts to higher weights and is loathe to let go. (Research homeostasis and set points.) I had never been overweight but went through a period where, due to medication, my weight increased. I don't think I would have been able to lose it if I had not found a very specific diet that breaks that problem (hCG diet). Now my body has adjusted to the lower weight again and it is thrilling for me to be able to eat normally (healthy) and even have desserts or muffins sometimes without gaining - set points can be good, too

Good point.

Many factors contribute to weight gain and loss.
I'm sorry some posters were offended by the topic. I did say right up front if they didn't care to be offended that they should click out of the thread.

Don't worry, Slayer, being obese should not be socially acceptable and I don't think it's a good trend to go there. Social disapproval helped me quit smoking and also lose weight.

I think that any time I feel inclined to have a second helping, I will watch the Big, Fat, F*ck video - that was a riot! I can see how some might be offended, but that is only because they are in the midst of it. I hope they research some of the suggestions made in this thread (particularly hCG and low-carb) and accept that they can make positive changes even if they do have a medical or genetic condition. It may take longer and it is a lot of work, but it can be done. It's life-changing to lose a lot of weight - being healthy is a present you give yourself every day

Yes you did warn people. Personally I wasn't offended by the topic just amazed by some of the angry comments about people who are "fat, overweight, obese", whichever title you like to use. A question was raised early in the thread, "why are fat people so defensive when people talk about their fatness??" Well I'll take a guess here, strangers are bashing them about their bodies. People who have absolutely no care whatsoever about "fat" people are angry with them because they don't meet the standards of what the masses deem "healthy" in appearance. Hmmm, I think it's only natural for people to react to hostility aimed at them.

What replies? This thread has derailed into a fat joke contest. BTW, what happened to the fat character, nicknamed Gomer Pyle, in the movie you referenced ? Oh yeah:

but but but but ,,, but they told me at the free government money place that if I can get fat, really really fat, that I can get on disability and receive free stuff like free money, and more free food, and a big free fat place for a big fat guy to live in. And oh yeah, I can get me some of that free health care too. Screw working, ha, that's for the skinny young chumps out there. Fat isn't fat peoples fault you should know, ha. It's like smoking, it's the fault of the evil corporations for addicting us to that stuff. We're just stupid monkeys that don't know any better. They should known that many humans can't control themselves, that they have no self-respect. I also found out too that if I get fired for being really fat, I can get free unemployment money too. Fat city!

I have said a few times during this thread that it wasn't meant as a slam on people with a weight problem. Instead it was a wake up call for those who want to do something about their weight problem. For those who are happy then it doesn't matter.

I'm not saying and posting all of this just to have some fun. I have this past year lost 34lbs. I know what it's like to be thin and in shape and over weight and depressed. I have never been obese but I could have easily slipped down that path. I started going for walks after dinner, Cutting back on snack/JUNK food. Eating more lean meats and vegetables. Less greasy fast foods/carry out. After a few weeks I lost a few pounds and started with some basic push-ups and sit-ups etc.

In the end it's up to you. If you are overweight and happy. Then it doesn't matter. But if you're not happy. Do something about it.....

I was ashamed of my weight and avoided the camera the last couple of years.

Also I wish to apologize if I've offended anyone. This was not directed towards those who have legitimate health issues beyond their control.

This was directed towards those who are self inflected with an overweight problem. They know what they did to get there and know what it will take to extract themselves.

I agree, it wasn't the topic, but the attitudes of a few that made me cringe, I have been thin, chubby, thin, chubby, thin, pleasingly plumb, and my husband is a saboteur, lol,

Some posters seem to think it is a choice to be fat, I don't believe most people desire is to be overweight, I came to the point I just want to maintain instead of all the yo yoing, which makes you gain more after every diet.

And now at sixty I can't be as physical as I once was.

Here is the deal, do you think when people see a thinly challenged individual walk into a public place they say, oh poor thing her meds are making her gain weight, or she must have a slow metabolism?

NO, they think you are a slovenly pig, weak willed and uneducated, slob.

I know Slayers heart is in the right place,

Maybe we can start an ATS weight watchers challenge for the New Year, not really so much about how much you lose, but eating healthy, and exercising more,

Here's the deal with fat, in-so-far as today is concerned.

Medical science can keep a whole lot of people alive for a lot longer than they normally would have been able to live ... if you have enough money !!!

Now ,,, (cough cough .. clearing throat) ... bring socialized health care into this picture.

Next, figure out how we will be able to manage limited resources in order to keep everyone healthy and alive. Now bring a boat load of fat people into this picture. .... So tell me, what do you see happening?

Fat is not an "unfortunate" disease. Fat is a self-inflicted situation, like smoking diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, alcoholism and drug abuse.

Sorry, but I do not want to be part of any collective health care system which forces ME to pay for other peoples WILLFULLY self-inflicted misery. Screw THAT idea and all those that would want to enslave me (via involuntary servitude, taxes, etc.) to pay for their misdeeds, not so long as there are so many irresponsible and stupid humans out there these days.

Anyhow, I wouldn't have a problem with fat people if they didn't cost society so much. And think of all those excess meals that they are consuming and taking from the mouths of the hungry too. "I just ate mine AND someone else's supper, HAR!" Have they no shame? How can anyone have so little self-respect for themselves too? Are they intentionally trying to become a burden upon the rest of us? The stats indicate so, as with the smokers and the boozers and the sleeparounders, etc.

EXPECT MORE from a human !!! Otherwise, toss it back into the jungle so it can swing from a tree where it might belong. I have less respect for those that can't and aren't doing the RIGHT THING! Sorry, but that's just the way I was raised ... not my fault, ha.

That was just asinine, are you joking?

I hope I am reading you wrong.

I have worked hard all my life, I still do physical labor, I am not on SSI, never have been, I don't have free medical care, I DON"T HAVE ANY, I don't receive food stamps, and I assure you, you have NEVER paid any of my medical expenses.

Right now I don't have a doctor and haven't seen anyone but my psychiatrist since 1981, lol

You know it is not easy to be the ONLY overweight person on the forum,

cough,

Willing to speak out and face the humiliation,

Once again, I don't get heath-care and you haven't paid for squat when it comes to me, because I don't go to doctors.

I weigh to much, I am getting old, and perhaps the government will shoot me, before you have to worry about it.

My youngest daughter is a juvenile diabetic, asthmatic and weighs and 112 .

My husband who has always been thin had a hearth attack at 42.

Guess what we are all going to die.

Yet. It's just a matter of time. If you do not have health care coverage, do you have cash stashed away for that eventual rainy day, assets that can be sold to cover the cost of any self-inflicted disease? Who should pay for a crackheads recovery and medical costs? We all know how AIDS is spread and NOT spread, yet who should pay for those that just didn't give a damn one way or the other? You? Me?

If I'm going to be forced to be (partially) responsible to pay for societies personal consequences, then I should be entitled to have a say in their so-called socialist lives, ha. If this health care thang actually ever goes into affect, overweight people are going to be looked upon with the same disdain as junkies, disease infested hookers and johns, boozers, drunken drivers, etc.

Seriously, I really couldn't care any less how someone else wants to be and live their life .. until they make it my business and responsibility. If you want to be respected for who and what you are, pray that we do not become a socialist society. I honestly do not want to be forced into despising those that could end up enslaving me, particularly those that do so INTENTIONALLY.

Okay, so let's put your idea into practice. Let's take all the junkies, welfare abusers, illegal immigrants, AIDS Victims, "fatties," tax evaders, et al., and line them up and shoot them all. Are you happy with that? I mean, hell, I don't want to be paying for some fat person who will cost me a bunch of money later, do I?

Do you realize that welfare abuse is the in the top five list of wasted tax payer money, with illegal immigrants making the same list? Guess what? Fat people's medical expenses don't even make the top ten.

But to hell with charts and graphs. Let's blame one demographic on the economic plight of the country. Better yet, let's just kill all the demographics that cause tax payers to lose money and let God sort them out. That will definitely solve our problems, right?

I hope you never get struck down with some sort of ailment which requires you to go on social assistance, because it will be someone just like you that will "take care of the problem" because their taxes go up a whole $.50 a year.

I'll have my torches and pitchforks at the ready, because you never know when an evil fat person will try and steal your money.

/sarcasm

Peace be with you.

Don't have access to affordable health-care, we fall in-between the cracks, I don't know where people get this notion there are so many on socialized medicine in this country, if you work and make to much you can't get help around here, and the insurance is to high.

That's not what I was saying at all. I am just saying, essentially, do and be as you please, more power to ya all !!! I just ask one thing though: Respect my freedom. Please. Don't let your life and lifestyle choices mess up and/or interfere and/or degrade mine!

I hope you never get struck down with some sort of ailment which requires you to go on social assistance, because it will be someone just like you that will "take care of the problem" because their taxes go up a whole $.50 a year.

I thought the issue at hand was fat. I have a lot of compassion for those struck down with a medical condition that was caused by no fault of their own. That's called bad luck and can happen to anyone and we all should help pay collectively for that. Fat however isn't bad luck, fat is a lifestyle choice, just as a whole bunch of other things like smoking, AIDS, drug addictions, and many other self-inflicted consequences. THAT I should not be FORCED to pay for.

I'll have my torches and pitchforks at the ready, because you never know when an evil fat person will try and steal your money.

Oh sure, make this out to be one of those evil money issues. Listen though, you can't hide the truth, because what we are talking about here is called involuntary servitude, and it's illegal !!!

Socialism should be voluntary. If you're okay with that, then I'm okay with everyone's personal lifestyle choices.

Mamabeth... Then you would fit into the very small % with a valid reason for weight gain. So this topic is not even about you.

truthseeker1984 ...... I am a mortician not a funeral director you uneducated tool. Why would I be selling caskets ? I have been doing mortuary work since my early teens, so have watched the obesity epidemic unfold right in front of me. I am well aware of how cheap and plentiful food has become at the same rate as people exercise less. It is not rocket science.

I also run a fitness center that offers free training to the morbidly obese. To save their lives. With my own money I have also put some of the machines I build in lower socio-economic areas being used with local health experts to help fight obesity.

Just because I call people out on the BS excuses, 99% of the overweight use, does not mean I don't care. By not enabling their excuses and actually doing something physical to help them , I care more than you would know.

In fact I would be willing to bet I have already done more to fight obesity than you will ever do.
