Help Free A Major Indigenous Leader Imprisoned in the U.S.

On Tuesday, October 19, 2010 while en route to leading traditional Ayahuasca ceremonies in Oregon, indigenous Colombian healer Juan Agreda Chindoy was detained in the Houston International Airport. He was formally arrested by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) for possession of his traditional medicine Ayahuasca. He is now being charged as a federal criminal and is facing up to 20 years in federal prison. Taita Juan is certified by his community and by the Colombian ministry of health as a traditional healer. He is one of the few remaining indigenous spiritual leaders in the world that holds the ancestral medicinal knowledge of an ecosystem that is rapidly disappearing. Taita Juan is a father, a husband and a godfather to more than 20 children. With more than 3000 supporters from several countries in the world, his life and work have touched many.

That's no excuse for not knowing the law. He was carrying a dangerous psychotropic substance and communing with demons (though the latter offense is perfectly legal in most states). Jail is probably where he belongs, though I think they should release him and deport him for humanitarian reasons.

It's not dangerous, it's used in their culture for healing.

And "by the law" he should be protected since it's used in religious ceremonies.

What I find stupid is....where do you draw the line between illegal drugs, and substances used for religious reasons? What if a person believes that all drugs have a place for their individual religious experiences? Shouldn't that be protected under religious freedom? And who has a right to determine that someone is religious enough to take certain drugs? The whole thing makes zero sense from an enforcement perspective.

I find it Ironic how Christians like to trumpet "what would Jesus do" to others but dismiss it in themselves.

There's a word for that....

No, it is not dangerous, nor toxic. It is the most effective and sacred medicine of the entre Amazon and has been used spiritually for thousands of years. No demons involved here; just a real and widely loved healer and purveyor of a sacred lineage. Have you no concept of religious freedom?
The level of your ignorance and the blackness of your heart are truly astonishing. Great job holding back the species and standing in the way of love, compassion and intelligence and staining the Christian faith with your demented hatred.

Greetings - this is my first post here at ATS, I haven't even finished making my profile yet and I came across this thread...

This is sadistic, absolute nonsense. This has nothing to do with a war on drugs - it's a war on people and freedom.

NOBODY uses this medicine (ayahuasca) for giggles. It is serious inquiries only. I can't stand to read this kind of thing - but I am grateful to see someone posting it here. I'm going to spread through the entheogen community.

This is a religious sacrament - may as well confiscate the Eucharist and wine at every catholic church in Texas too.

I understand Texas is in the front line in the 'war' on drugs...but let's make clear distinctions between DRUGS and medicines or sacraments. The line is clear and easily defined: plants and traditional plant concoctions are none of the governments business or concern and they never should be.

You really think a coc aine addict would take the time and materials necessary to MAKE coc aine hydrochloride if the coca leaves were available legally? Would a heroin junkie make diacetylmorphine from poppies? NO...there wouldn't BE as many addicts if these plants were left alone and people were allowed to prepare their own medicines from them or consume them in their natural state... I am against outlawing ANY plant or combination of plants. It is nothing short of our birthright to imbibe ANY growing thing for ANY reason and yes, that includes the feared 'recreation'.

I am not surprised at the comments defending the shaman. After all modern liberal education has rejected all that is decent and has embraced the demonic and the demoralizing. If it's from a third world culture that is hostile to christianity then you are told it's goooood. If it glorifies the Judeo-christian God, then that is clearly a threat. So the third world culture is automatically good, even if in times past they practiced cannibalism or child sacrifice. (Not saying this particular group does but many indigenous tribes did.)

If on the other hand you read a Bible or pray in a public school you should be immediately arrested. I think Texas got this one right for a change. The psychotropic drug, no matter how 'safe' it is, poses a threat to the mental well being of our society. Would you like your bus driver, surgeon or pilot on this stuff?

If it is possible for those trained in government controlled education camps to remove their carefully inculcated biases for a moment, then you might ask yourself exactly what does this man and his pagan religion have to offer you? What are the accomplishments of his civilization compared to the one you live in now and are being programmed to destroy?

Beyond pathetic and disgusting.

I have journeyed with Aya and Daime before with an amazonian shaman, and it was an amazing, beautiful experience.

The ultimate irony is that consciousness expanding and healing, naturally growing plants are made 'illegal', while poisons such as alcohol (which CONTRACT consciousness) and cigarettes, which kill untold numbers of people each year can be bought on every street corner legally.

More of our bizzare societal impositions and severe imbalances being displayed yet again. Sigh.

Just curious but how do you know he communes with demons? Don't think that whts shamanism is about at all IMO. First time I heard of this medicinal herb but it sounds as if the law is ambiguous over this one(depending on its form?)

You are likely now under the influence of powerful demons. Shamans are not spiritually neutral, fun and games types of guys. I believe they have real power and that it sources from the devil. The Bible explicitly warns folks to stay away from them. Again your cultural brainwashing is doing you a disservice. You folks have no idea how far you have fallen from right thinking. 50 years ago most people in the christian west would have enough sense to steer clear from folks like this. It is a sign of the times that there is absolutely no spiritual discernment.

I know what it's like to think like most of you. I went through it all and probably in greater depth. I soon discovered that the source inspiration of shamanism is very, very evil, even if it seems to make sense or make you feel good for a while, or if it gives you a false sense of power and control. These evil spirits are very deceptive.

What if I told you that doctors prescribe whatever this gentleman was carrying in 10 different kinds of pills made by major pharmaceutical companies? Most being more dangerous than the natural substance through additives and cost-cutting manufacturing.

Hasn't most religions been used for badness? Think it's about the intention of the individual not organization.

Shamanism has a spiritual dimension. It's not about herbs. In fact from Wikipedia,

Shamanism is an anthropological term referencing a range of beliefs and practices regarding communication with the spiritual world

See it entails communication with the spiritual world. Let's compare this practice with what the Bible says:
Deuteronomy 18,

When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

Now why does the good Lord want you to avoid shamans and witches and occultists and the like? Is he being mean to you, restricting the good times that will surely follow if you start using Tarot cards, take psychotropic drugs (part of witchcraft since ancient times) or consulting your ouija board?

The reason is that false religious practices are energized by demons, as is clearly stated in the New Testament. The Lord does not want you to lose your very soul by engaging with fallen angels. It's not hard to understand really.

So a guy was caught with an illegal drug and he's suddenly exempt from the law because he likes to fight demons while high? Sounds fair

You are clearly a psychopath and represent all that is reprehensible in humanity. I wonder if you secretly know how Satanic you are or if you are just truly that deranged.
