I think the USDA may be off by a factor of 10. I would say 35-55% by the beginning of next year, and that is an understatement as well I believe.

The rest of the world is moving forward with plans to dump us off like a bad habit. All we are is a bunch of consumers who produce next to nothing. They do not need us. There will always be other countries who will buy from them. As the dollar starts to plummet after midterm elections, the price of fuel per US dollar will skyrocket. Everything requires fuel. Transportation of goods, fuel to run tractors on farms, fuel to run packing and processing machine. Only 10% of our energy here is renewable. When the cost of producing, importing and transporting goods and food rises, the byproducts price rise exponentially.

It is going to get very ugly, very soon.

food prices will rise
meaning more people will eat fast food from the dollar menu
fast food companies will be forced to use cheaper (GMO) foods to stay at 1 dollar.
more of the population will become obese and/or get cancer.

That could have been a gift to his child. Sometimes, during the toughest of times, it is the little things that keep us going. I think now, more than ever, we have to really work to be understanding of each other. So many people are frightened, desperate and afraid. We need to support each other as much as possible. I recently showed my children some videos of older great depression survivors. One thing kept being mentioned and that was the way that people tried to prop each other up. This was remembered by these people, who were likely children during the depression, because THOSE were the things that made the world seem enduring and worthwhile. Things like saved for trips to the movies, candies and lipstick were the things that brought a little light into an otherwise dingy world. We will all begin to understand these things again.

That could very well have been the case and what a lovely gesture. I mean it. However....this man had over 15 dollars worth of candy. Not individual packets or candy bars but bags full of candy. He said it was for his kids and thought his wife had enough credit on the card to buy these products.

I did feel badly at first (and thought about buying some of that for him) but then I got thinking (after standing there for over 5 minutes watching him take stuff off and keep, retrying) .....it was only the 26th. I was wondering if he had enough nutritious food at home to feed those kids for the next 5 days.

I know I eat a lot less towards the end of the month after figuring out what bill will get paid each month.
But it's a fact. The prices keep going up and our income stays the same. Mines been the same for 5 years.
So yeah, let's buy candy and celebrate (just kidding)

I know kids need a lot of reassurance now a days but I don't believe 15 dollars worth of food stamp money is the way. Perhaps, playing an extra half hour with them and giving them a lollipop would suffice a lot better.

I'm just sayin'....................

To ats members. I heard about this a week ago on a Local news stations. Pathetic that ats finally post this on ats. It is honorable reality that the most important news probably for our generation is postponed for crazy ats banter about aliens and world governments. 8$ more a gallon of milk coming soon

This site has become nothing but a parasite. You have to look for real information such as this

Dude, no offense but the dollar menu will probably be the buck fifty menu now.

All joking aside...
As more and more people lose their jobs, and food gets more expensive, we will see more and more people
turn to cheap crappy food just to get calories. Sad, but true.
We will also see more and more people frequent the ER, because they cannot afford to go to a physician at all for rudimentary physician care. Hence, ER's will begin to refuse patients unless they have documented insurance or pay cash upfront.

That doesn't even mention the fact that most people don't have dental insurance at all, therefore the luxury of dental care is and will become just that, a luxury item for the elite.

It is truly frightening. How many people now actually go to the dentist every 6 months, or are able to make sure their kids get to go?

Most people I know don't. They make a hair too much money to get state aid.

Very sad days ahead for most people...

Honestly, in a sane world this thread would be as the number one hit on ats right now besides MOON SPACE STATION. wtf is wrong with people.

I think it is hard reality that people can grow their own food. (even tho I have never done such thing). it is easy to do so in urban areas as well. (dirt+seeds+water+time=food) I love fast food. cheap food is a pain in the ass when it comes down to healthy choices. It is hard and impossible in michigan. we have become a death trap for the overweight here. Detroit is far worse due to fast foods and 2 for 3$ chicken sandwichs which are the #in bomb. It is so hard.

In the same light, people NEED a diversion especially now. So alternative news is GOOD for us. What..?...you rather everyone sit on their computer and bring up news site that echos the others every hour?
What good will that accomplish?
Don't get fooled that...... just because we deviate off the grim news, that doesn't mean we're not aware of it. I mean, how long would you like us to keep our hands on that hot stove? Some times, we need a break to cool off so................chill!
Besides, isn't it terrific to learn that NASA will be sending people to Mars in 20 years for good? That ought to resolve our economic melt down!

It is Halloween in a few days. That accounts for $15.00 worth and although it may not all be for the kids consumption it does certainly go a very long way toward giving the kids a happy holiday and a sense of normalcy. And i personally think, that happy days are becoming increasingly rare in the lives of some children.

Thank you for seeing my point. : )

I think you have to take into consideration, not all members on ATS are adults. Some teenagers and young college students really aren't feeling the effects like some adults are.

Here's an idea. Start your own thread. A serious one so you can sound off and attract more like-minded people such as yourself. I think that's better than spreading your frustration and anger on this one and going off on a tangent.
How does that grab ya?

You have a good vibe. I like your spirit. The world needs more like you.

(but you're wrong about it being Halloween candy. It was the type that once the bag is opened, the candy is exposed. Like a pound of string-licorice and Gummie Bears. I just hope those kids are eating well because the parents decisions, look questionable. That's all)

Thank you. That is a very kind thing to say.

I do hope the kids are eating healthy food as well.

What I find interesting is that it is cheaper to feed a family with drive through fast food than shopping and preparing it. I agree with you.....population control.

food going up from 1 percent to 3.5 percent to even 5 percent is not going to destroy the economy. So if you are paying 4.50 for an item the total cost of the increase is 22.5 cents...really population reduction? Please read the entire article from where I am from just outside of Boston gas has gone up as of recently to twenty cents more than last week. Lets look at some lower numbers folks 2.50 for a box of butter will now be an increase of .05 cents at a 2 percent increase. Lets be reasonable in our assessments of cost of living increases on a yearly basis and and how much oil impacts the shipping of food back and fourth.

ok only 22.5cents or .05 cents for one item only add them to all the items you buy each years and tell me it's nothing.

The price of food is NOT going to increase.

The value of your money is going to decrease.

That is a big difference.

Don’t worry Nancy Pelosi says that food stamps give the US economy the most bang for the buck. Looks like in 2011 we will be getting one hell of a bang.

same difference? Either way were paying more of what we earn for food. Which is, and I am sure you will agree, an essential part of our lives. Devalutation of the doller just means everything will eventually become more expensive, and it has. But you would think (and Im saying this from the angle of the average person), they would at least keep food prices down.

Your argument is irrelevent, sorry.

The reason food prices are going up is because the worlds output of food is dropping due to climatic changes.
Its not a conspiracy but it is something that is going to increase over the next decade or longer.
