B.O. maybe:

"Back Orifice (often shortened to BO) is a controversial computer program ...

I thought you were being VERY sarcastic with this... so I went and looked it up. Lol ... it really exists, and it's really named Back Orifice... hilarity!

I checked out their site, and for some reason 'Cult of the Dead Cow' rang a bell in my memory... though I can't, for the life of me, remember why. Back in the day, were they in the BBS scene?

You are correct. Although, they were far more prolific than just that.

Wikipedia:

CULT OF THE DEAD COW, also known as cDc or cDc Communications, is a computer hacker and DIY media organisation founded in 1984 in Lubbock, Texas. The group maintains a weblog on its site, also titled "CULT OF THE DEAD COW". New media are released first through the blog, which also features thoughts and opinions of the group's members.

To further the Cult's stated goal of "Global Domination Through Media Saturation," over the years cDc members have granted interviews to major newspapers, print magazines, online news sites, and international television news programs.

I have a feeling it is NOT right in front of our nose.

The wikileaks folks were very aware of the amount of resources that the feds are throwing at them. With as many "professionals" that are on top of this very topic as we speak, the wikileaks folks would no better and I dont believe would ever "hide" the password anywhere. That is the first hiding spot that would be found.

I dont think that wikileaks is playing a frivolous "game" as some have suggested. I feel that the information that wikileaks has is very damning (hence the 120 person team) and they would NEVER risk some fed cracking it just because they were cocky enough to hide hints in plain site.

I could be wrong, but I feel like this is much more serious.

Believe it or not wikileaks probably really is trying keep this file secure until THEIR word says otherwise. The last thing you want to do if trying to keep a very specific secret is have the hubris to specifically place hints everywhere.

We will find out what this is all about when we are meant to.

The encoded message might be one instructing those with the key to publish if they don't hear from Assange or his associates within a certain period of time.

things seem to be getting interesting on /x/ ... the 'not aes256' user claims to have opened it... he, or some other anon user, said the pw is... itanimulli

illuminati..backwards...

I don't know how much stock I put in it tho... it's a thread of anon posters... I dunno... just presenting it here.
couldn't get the SSL program to install on windows 7, so I can't try the Pw

EDIT - further reading of even more anon posters on /x/ suggests a crapload of trolling, and nothing more...
I love anonymous forums...but this is the problem you run into. I expected as much... lol

What really needs to be made into a meme is the actual issue at hand. The issue being that the government has apparently just waged war on a collective of underground citizen journalists that spans the globe.

Reston5 shouldnt be the meme. The active and blatant repression of information by the US government is what should be the meme.

I do acknowledge that the reston5 meme does at least bring a slight degree of abstract relevance to the situation.

You make a succinct and excellent point. How should we go about doing it?
cDc... from the BBS scene... I can place the time/era and the cDc together... I just don't know exactly WHY I associate the two... story for another time I suppose.
I hate episodes of missing time... they scare me.

It's not known exactly what it is. In order to open it, you need a password - the 'aes256' extension shows that it's encrypted. In the first few pages of this thread, a few people posted how to decrypt the file using an SSL program...
we just have no idea what the password is.

It's well worth going back and reading the thread... it will answer most of the question you haven't yet asked.

Yeah, Webster Griffin Tarpley is a great writer. I have one of his books he co-authored entitled "Fleshing Out Skull & Bones." As far as this Assange character goes, isn't it true that a lot of whistle blowers with truly damaging info on TPTB usually end up "committing suicide" or become the victim of some other unfortunate "mishap?" Case in point; D.C. Madam, Janet Palfrey. If this guy really has the "goods," I, like yourself would consider it to be highly suspect.

An independent calculation of the byte distribution analysis I did last night is located here

I concur with his results. I am working on an n-gram analysis but honestly, I doubt it will turn up anything worthwhile.
