What happened in the 17 days the miners refuse to talk about?

You guys are just paranoid. This got a lot of coverage because it was the biggest event going on and was pretty technologically significant. These men were trapped like half a mile underground..

Yes, but the next day they said that there were only 33 miners missing.

Considering that was before they had contact with the miners, the 34 miners reference only existed at the surface and for only one day.

I would absolutely *love* to hear some of those tales. If you shared them here, I doubt the moderators would delete them as "off topic" because this is all about the experiences of miners, regardless of time, era and situation. AND would be much better than the stuff posted by others (that have been deleted). IMHO, I think your stories would add some *depth* (forgive the pun) to this topic.

As to sources... I have friends who live and visit in the area, and they had passed on to me some of the rumors circulating from locals and (alleged) family members. Something really weird has gone on there, and is possibly still going on. A U.S. presence in the site is certain, at the very least the drillers who created the rescue tunnel. And then some of those people spoke to their families back home about "agents dressed in black suits" accompanied by "scientist-looking dudes" and "cave explorers with a serious personality" going down into the mine. The main question was why would anyone go into a mine wearing a suit? Black, blue, or green, why would anyone go into a mine in a suit? Weird.

Apparently, a lot of the locals have been paid-off to keep quiet. Tourists and interested people are being told "There's nothing to see here" and scuttled into other areas at a steep discount. Free hotel stays, extended stays, free meals, etc. --IF they venture AWAY from the affected area. Could all be a bunch of rumors, but people are talking.

Fun story, but it's a story. As for suits and scientists Chili did call on NASA to help with the rescue.
2nd verse

Anything and everything is a story, but you don't have the inside scoop yourself, so your assertion of "it's a story" has as much merit as the relayed "story." Since neither of us were there, we can only base our ideas about what happened on things relayed to us by others (media, sources, friends, etc.). So, whatever version you believe "is a story," too.

I was holding back but wanted to say exactly what you said. Starred for your bravery and honesty. Most people have no idea what these poor guys went through.

Now it was mentioned to me that NASA helped with the actual rescue, so I looked this up to verify it and found evidence here: abcnews.go.com...

Mining is so dangerous they have to have their own Workers Comp Program like anyone working in / on the ocean (Long Harbormen)...........glad they made it out alive.

Strange they looked as well as they did after being trapped down there so long.

From the moment they made contact with the trapped miners their situation changed: they got food and water, with a special diet that would allow a fast recovery from the days when they had little food but without too much calories.

And they shaved and cleaned themselves before exiting the mine.

We'll find out what happened those first days when the books and movies come out. Can't wait. Till that happens, we can only guess. I think it might have gone like this.-

From the beginning - They did a head count then they counted their supplies of food and water. There's a lot of crying and praying and panicking. Some are caught filling their bellies with more than their share and little fights break out.

Some are crying a lot, hysterics, screaming, and are picked on by tougher guys who are just as terrified but bullying takes their minds off their own fear. One or two are suffering the brunt of most of the bullying and they feel ashamed to this day. The bullies are ashamed, and the thieves are ashamed.

A few really strong leaders are emerging. they're organising the troops and tidying the place up to make it more comfortable. It's now apparent who are the lazy ones too. They're all still praying, mostly privately and are feeling close to God. There's a lot of confessing sins going on too, secrets are coming out. They're dreaming very realistic dreams; food, loved ones, fresh air, dead relatives, some are seeing things that aren't there. Spooky!.

Various ailmants are getting worse, breathing problems. Some are suffering and others take turns to be nurse, doctor, and entertainment.

Once or twice they mentioned eating each other, only if they start to die. It's casual but deep down they're all worried.

Most of them know about the rugby team that crashed in the Andes on October 13th 1972 and the cannibalism there. But 16 of those guys made it out, just in time for Christmas, and the miners know they're luckier than those guys because the folk above ground know exactly where they are, and because they aren't freezing on top of a mountain in the middle of winter wearing their summer clothes. That gives them hope. They make a pact to discuss things first before they tell the world. Obviously some will let things slip out. The panic's over.

Okay and thank you for the explanation. I'm glad they were fed, watered and given hygiene. I still wonder why NASA got involved. Is it usual or NASA to get involved in stuff like this?

I'd guess NASA volunteered their help due the good public relations opportunity.
Their knowledge of harsh enviroments etc, i doubt they were really needed there though.

If I am not mistaken, NASA was contacted because of their experience in groups of people without direct contact with the rest of the world. I think NASA also helped with the food sent to the miners.

That is not why NASA got involved. Minera San Esteban Primera, the company that manages mining activity in Chile, is owned by CODELCO, the largest copper producing company in the world and the one that supplied copper for NASA 2005 program "DEEP IMPACT", projected to send probes to analyze meteors.

There is much more to this entire event than the over generalization that the general population is seeing. Everything is multithreaded, and has many parallel meanings.

And to think, I thought NASA was doing it for the positive PR! (Which considering how frequently their budget has been slashed in the past 12 years along with how far they have slipped in the public eye in light of projects being canceled wholesale, and the private sector beginning to outpace NASA development, I figured they needed all the positive PR they could get at the moment!)

However, what you said is some really good insight into the NASA involvement, although with that particular mine being closed indefinitely due to it being deemed "unsafe", the only flaw with that logic is that their help may have increased good-will with their supplier CODELCO, but it did little to remedy CODELCO's supply of Cu.

However, the edict of "Follow the Money" tends to be more true than naught, and I think your statement is far closer to the truth of the matter than any other I have heard thus far. I'm heading over to that thread to learn more. Thank you.
