I would have an 18 wheeler with two pickups inside each containing 2 motorcycles, each carrying an inflatable boat.

Do you know how hard it would probably be to avoid a traffic jam in an 18 wheeler?

I guess it all depends on how quick one is able to bug out. With plenty of warning, and if you are one of the first to go, you'll likely be ok with any choice, but as the roads clog, and/or get strewn with debris (depending on the scenario), your choices will quickly diminish.

That's why off-road capability is so important.

Why do you think I have the pick ups and bikes? The 18 wheeler is just part of the back up, you gotta have back-up vehicles. I would start by towing the 18 wheeler with a bulldozer.

No automobile here. I've got a specialized bmx bike that can be rode pretty much anywhere. It's lightweight, all black, and can get me where I need to be.

A bicycle, or my own two feet.

Something that doesn't rely on a power source.

Already acquired my bugout vehicle. It arrived just before Hurricane Paloma hit us in Nov. of 2008. Came in right handy for packing three 5-gallon containers of fuel on the back bench. I'm thinking of making a trailer.......

I'd take a Bike and try to go off-road unless I had my own private car-escape route.
That or wait it out somewhere and let the panicked people go first.

There is no way I'd take a car to the roads during such an event.
That is a surefire way to end up stuck somewhere in a mess of cars and quite possibly a graveyard of drivers.
You'd have a better chance just staying where you are.

Don't follow the panicked driving herd anywhere.

The all black factor improves chances of survival by 0.013% due to night camouflage .

Don't follow the panicked driving herd anywhere.

Those words should resonate throughout all facents of survival and preparation.
Organized group, fine, collection of like minded people, okay, but beware the mob. The mob has no mind; it is a reactionary body, exemplying its need and resentment with force. It is often deadly to its particpants and its victims.

It's not their fault, except for having flowed with a mob. People get scared, and they herd. If there is even a tenuous structure to the group, they have an enhanced probability of survival.

I don't mean to state the above as a fact; they are part of my truths based on observation and experience.

I will be using my trusty Honda CB250, I can load it to the max with fuel water and supplies and off I go, as a previous poster said, if the traffic is baked up and chaotic I should be able to get around them / go bush.

I am planning a trip from eastern Australia to Western Australia next year on her and camping along the way and pretty much trying to be self sufficient so it will be a good test.

I guess I'd go for one of those great big three wheel bikes. A large basket on the back to haul stuff around and the stability not to fall off and get hurt if there's no medical available. No sense driving anything else anywhere if something hit nation wide. The minute you pass somebody on the road coming from the direction your heading you would know things aren't much better where your going. remain calm and go slow, you'll get there.
Sorry Argentus, didn't see that up there, star for U

Diesel vehicle of any type.

It can run on # Diesel #1 Diesel #2 Diesel #4 home heating oil, kerosene. cooking oil, peanut oil, filtered crankcase drainings. transmission fluid. JP4, JP5. JP8 Jet A-1, Jet A, Jet B, corn oil, whale oil(yes some island in the pacific had a dead whale washed ashore and the local rendered it for fuel to run a diesel generator.)
some of these may require a little oil added for lubrication of the fuel pump.
