What concerns me at this point is that no debate whatsoever could live up to the bravado, hilarity, and entertainment value of this thread content.

So it is written, so shall it be done.

I dont know about that

There was a certain thread about a fishman alien that most us older members will remember, where the hilarity, still to this day, has not been matched

Can we discuss the validity of that topic as a debate topic?

It sounds like something I should tuck away for a boring day.
Not to make you work, but if you could find it, a link would be nice.

Well you can speak your own mind, that authority you have, and you can talk about your own fears. But for me to meet you in this contests is not a problem. That is my choice. That is why i am here. I am here to challenge anyone no matter who they are.

I am here to challenge your side, on what ever topic we are given. Who you are as a person doesn't really matter. I care about what you say. I am here to challenge the result of your work, not yours or anyone else's personality.

How people take their game is not my problem or yours. Because people have entered this game by their own choice.

This is a open contest set up for ATS members to join. If you are concerned about the mind of other gamers. Play at your very best than you have done your part

Loosing for a better debater is never a failure, its a learning process. You are very good with words, so i think you will do fine

That is without a doubt is one of the most guarded and subtly crafted forfeiture statements I think that I have ever heard.

I know that took a lot of courage for you to do that, and I want to applaud you for showing a commendable example by being the first to acquiesce and forfeit rather than die that slow agonizing public death on the vine all those still reluctant to show your own determination are bound to suffer.

I know it was a difficult thing to do, but I am sure that sense of relief you are now feeling after having withdrawn is well worth that risk and effort.

I have every faith now thanks to your stellar example the other remaining 48 nonqualified participants will follow suit, thus unburdening Semper, Chisler and Memoryshock so that they can free up their time for what’s really important…my trophy!

Gentlemen I think it’s safe to say with this first obstacle out of the way, it’s a good idea to start working on that.

This should all be wrapped up in another day or two.

Better luck next year my friend.

Arrangements are forthcoming. I hope to have good news for the fighters tomorrow. Delay has been unavoidable but the Debate Forum retains a committed following that should be able to make this work. Standby to finish standing by.

It would have been nice if the debate could be delayed another 14 days. I have been waiting for this to take place for more than 5 weeks now. Another two weeks wouldn't hurt?

I have a work schedule where i work for 14 days and have 28 days of . This coming Thursday i have to leave for work.

If not!

It would be nice if i could have some flexibility to challenge my opponent. Because i have to work for 12 hours and sleep at the location i work. It is not always that easy to get a good internet signal from where i work. There might also be some restriction to when i can use the internet.

All i am asking for is some flexibility.

I'm not sure exactly what your work circumstances are like, but in my experience I would never be able to complete a tournament in a situation like that.
If we delayed for two more weeks, and you'd be racing against the clock to finish the second round before work intervened again, and if you advanced to round 3 you'd be right back in the same spot you are today.

I know my work schedule will cause some problems for me. But is it possible to have some flexibility. I will be given 24 hours to create my side of the topic. But is it possible to have some flexibility on the 24 hour response time. If i give a heads up in advance?

I hope i am not going to need the flexibility, but it would be nice to have just in case. Because i do really want to participate in this debate.

Matches must be kept moving and be completed in a timely manner. All matches in a round must be completed before anyone can advance to the next round (because everyone needs an opponent), and when you have 7 people waiting on 1 for a week because somebody got in to the tournament even though they knew they were making a commitment they couldn't keep, others begin to get frustrated or bored or are more likely to have a random event pop up that interferes. That has caused tournaments to be abandoned in the past.

It would be considered perfectly fair play, albeit not exactly heart-warming, if your opponent intentionally tried to force a forfeiture by working the clock (I once pre-wrote a rebuttal, modified it quickly as soon as my opponent posted, and responded just minutes after my opponents post, cutting their rest time in half by surprise). If you are vulnerable to such tactics, I suggest that you set up a challenge match instead. As far as I'm concerned the response window for a challenge match could be set in terms of weeks rather than hours if two challengers agreed to it.

Here's the time policy, copied directly from the opening of one of the last tournament debates. (You guys should all look through old tournament debates if you haven't, they include important information on rules and procedures relevant to tournament matches)

This Is The Time Limit Policy:

Each debate must post within 24 hours of the timestamp on the last post. If your opponent is late, you may post immediately without waiting for an announcement of turn forfeiture. If you are late, you may post late, unless your opponent has already posted.

Each debater is entitled to one extension of 24 hours. The request should be posted in this thread and is automatically granted- the 24 hour extension begins at the expiration of the previous deadline, not at the time of the extension request.

In the unlikely event that tardiness results in simultaneous posting by both debaters, the late post will be deleted unless it appears in its proper order in the thread.

If a participant misses 2 posts in a debate, it will be then declared a forfeiture. In the event where the debate continues, once a debate forum staff member is able to respond, the debate will be closed and awarded to the winning participant.

Also I want to apologize that there hasn't been official news today. I have been out of the debate forum for a while and need to be sure I put in the time and attention to detail to make sure you all get really good matches. The start is in the very near future, and there will be a warning U2U to participants to make sure than nobody gets caught off guard.

One more tip to stay on top of the impending start: Add The Debate Forum to your favorite forums and make sure you are subscribed to this thread as well, so that the MyATS will show you when there is news in the threads and when topic threads start going up.

It’s quite alright, I know 49 of the participants are looking for face saving ways to forfeit the tournament so I have taken the liberty to provide the top ten face saving excuses.

Obviously some of the 49 forfeiting members will have to use the same excuse and that might lead to some conspiracy talk, which is why the lucky first 10 forfeiting members will be beyond reproach.

10. My dog ate my college thesis and I have to rewrite it, it will take me at least a month.

9. My child has been selected to the U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team and I must accompany her to practice on top of a mountain outside Sarajevo where there is no internet reception.

8. I have been hired by the Karzai Government to negotiate the Treaty with the Taliban and the talks are so intensive I will not possibly be able to participate in the tournament.

7. Felipe Cousteau has asked me to accompany him on an exhaustive research trip to find the source of the Amazon River and I will be away from an Internet Connection for months as we navigate remote parts of the rainforest.

6. Barack Obama has asked me to head up his reelection campaign team and I think we can all agree how difficult and time consuming a job that is going to be.

5. I have been invited to join a team of Japanese Mountain Climbers to scale Mt. Everest but the narrow and limited Nepalese climbing season happens to now be falling during the exact same time of the debates.

4. My meditational and esoteric studies have reached the point where I am ready to ascend to the status of Ascended Master and will no longer be dwelling within this dimension.

3. I have been given a message by Space Aliens to deliver to the world to save it from the apocalypse and if I don’t act on it now, the debate will never finish anyway because the world is slated to end before the tournament!

2. I finally was accepted for that full sex reversal operation after completing years of psychological evaluations successfully and my surgery is scheduled over the debate period.

1. I have been kidnapped by Space Aliens and they say the competitive nature of our world is destroying it and will not allow me to participate in the Tournament.

So there you have the top ten acceptable face saving excuses to forfeit.

Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to be the first to choose from the yet to be unused slate!

Well i am not looking for a excuse to forfeit. All i was asking for was a 14 days delay. Or some flexibility within the 24 hour time frame.

Your reading skills dont match your writing skills. That is not a very good combination in a debate. I am going to own you
If you keep this up.

Debates are tentatively planned to begin at 9AM Pacific on Thursday.

Topics for the first round have been selected and seeding has been completed.
Before I take off to get some sleep tonight, u2us will be sent to inform fighters of their seeding and warn that Round 1 is imminent.

Debate threads will be posted before the end of tomorrow, as close to simultaneously as my fingers and my browser will allow, at which point you will all know your topics, but will be asked not to post to them until the 24 hour clock for opening statements begins counting down, which is currently planned to be 9AM on Thursday.

Important update
There has already been one small surprise for me in this because I missed a few things that were arranged before I stepped in on this one.

Tournament will still be starting on time it appears for now, but I may have to make a slight alteration to the U2U that half of you have already received.

I'm sorry about this and I'm trying to stay up long enough to sort it all out.

Alright, this got a bit complicated for a bit because it appeared I had made a mistake (and indeed I was just about to, but everything's alright).

There may be a few small changes from what some of you were expecting earlier. Murphy's Law has been enforced rather firmly of late, but Our Favorite Marine called for reinforcements and got another Marine, and basically that means we're going to keep finding ways to improvise until this tournament is a stunning success anyway.

Since it was previously arranged for the tournament start dates to be separated a bit so that the judges don't get swamped, so the Championship tournament will be beginning as announced, and the secondary tournament will begin concurrently with round 2 of the Championship tournament (judging for round one of the secondary tournament may be slightly delayed, as that will be the peak of the judging load if both tournaments complete round 2 at the same time, but after that it should be smooth. Sorry for the flip-flop for those of you in the secondary tournament, but this will improve the quality of judging for you, in our experience.

Because there were not 16 ranked fighters interested in contending for the title, there will be several new debaters vying for the championship. This is normal for the debate forum, and new debaters have been known to beat opponents with more in-forum experience and make runs at the title, even in the face of strong competition early on. The ranking system is intended to foster competition, encourage challenge matches, and help prevent forfeitures, not divide our community or establish a pecking order.

The new debaters who were included in the championship tournament were selected based on their WATS Index and Star Count, as these reflect ATS experience and the ability to gain reader support and were more objective than a direct comparison of users posting histories (which would have been extremely time consuming as well).

These are the participants in the Championship Tournament at present. You all should have received a u2u from me titled, "Heads Up! Debates Start Soon!". That u2u remains valid and unchanged, despite my earlier concern.
MemoryShock, Hotbakedtater, orange-light, ProtoplasmicTraveler, Whatukno, Romantic_Rebel, OzWeatherman, Getreadyalready, Skyfloating, Rising Against, wormwood13, Airspoon, Budski, ModernAcademia, Chissler, saltheart foamfollower.

The Secondary tournament is not completely set yet. The mistake I almost made was designating an alternate who had already ensured his participation by joining early, so I need to fix that mistake before I can announce a lot about that (and there is also a chance that some of those fighters currently expected to compete in the secondary tournament could get promoted into the championship tournament if there are drop-outs at the start- alternates would then be promoted into the secondary tournament).

So, I hope I have covered everything, but it's 4am and I do need to rest, so please U2U me or post here if there are questions or concerns about anything and we'll work through them in the later part of this morning.
