Okay, I just figured out what this is all about ...

It's to discourage all of us to stop posting and moaning in BBQ threads. No chance of stars are karma killers!

I like it, i think it rounds off the spectrum of ATSrs.

There are writer/journalists who will get a high WATS score.

And now there are debater/commentators? who get a good Karma.

I think it reflects the balance of ATS....Threads=WATS and Karma=posts.

Like the new Karma concept.

But I still think that people having like 0.05 WATS looks absolutely awful. It's humiliating.

How about, if your WATS is below 1, the indicator just doesn't show up at all?

Humiliating? Only if someone is driven by this mad modern idea that everyone must compete.

To me ATS is about learning and teaching, reading and disseminating, about enjoyment and healthy discussion both with people of your own and of opposite views.

Rather than turn WATS off it they are under 1, just turn the whole lot off. Someone's contribution to ATS is NOT determined by their posts/stars/flags etc but by the content of what they write. THAT is the only true measure of someone's worth.

Don't get me wrong Skipper, I really love what you have done with the site and give much respect for all the hard work you have put into it but was this really necessary??

I understand, it's what the customer wants and I am not blaming you but why do we need these stipulations??

Are we that insecure?? Were so many fragile egos stepped on with the "WATS" system that an other system was needed?? I know which member's input I value and frankly, their rating isn't going to change that.

I guess I am just grumpy from sleep deprivation and an certain tournament that just doesn't seem to take off but I feel kinda weird with all these values added to my virtual identity...

I still rate 'm one post at a time.

It's human nature for people to compete and compare themselves to other people, PuterMan.

How humiliating is it going to be for people to join the site and have their WATS sitting at 0.01 or 0.02 for extended amounts of time?

It could be fixed very simply, too.

If WATS >= 1 then display indicator. One line of code!

oh man,i only made a comment,and my karma went down by one,guessing karma didn't rate my comment..

Long time since we spoke but I read your posts on a daily basis. I know I don't have to look at your level of karma, stars, flags or how many WATS you harbor too know the weight of your posts.

Well i would say that at least 75% of the ATS population are actually posters rather than threaders.

So for the vast majority Karma will mean recognition for their contribution in posts.

I don't think the threaders will mind they have WATS.

And surely the threaders know that it is the posters who make their threads great threads, to a large degree.

I star posts for all sorts of reasons, if I agree for instance or because I respect the courage of the poster or the clarity of the content.

Even when I disagree with a comment, posts that make me laugh almost always earn a star. So if other members star when they have had their mood lifted by a post or just because someone has taken time and care to make a great Thread or shared their knowledge or expertise, then I'm all for the K score.

Human nature to compete and compare, more is the pity. It's OK I do understand what you are saying but being a grumpy old man the age for being competitive has long since passed. This happens once you realise the futility of it and you can then start getting on with enjoying life.

WIT not WATS, CONTENT not KARMA, FACTS not FLAGS, SAGACITY not STARS.

I for one will never judge anyone on their numbers.
