It also launched what it calls the Graph API. This allows developers to access a wide range of user data. General Information and other data that users have disclosed is readily available, and developers can request more through special permissions.

Developers can also get additional access to users through the Open Graph Protocol. They can publish updates to any user who has Liked an item. And they can create their own version of the Like button that doubles as a way to have users become fans of their Page.

It's amazing how with this technology anybody stands a chance to get noticed on the internet. If you got a message, you can get it seen and heard to the people you want to reach.

In my opinion, the government does not need facebook to spy on you, they have social security numbers, income tax, census and a multitude of other ways for doing that.

A Social Security number can only tell the government about your job, or welfare, history.

An income tax form can only tell you about the government about your work arrangements.

The census can only tell the government about the facts that you fill out on the census form.

Facebook, and other websites, are completely different.

They can delve into information that you wouldn't put on any official form; they can also glean some information from you that you never even posted !

Hello, Lyn.

I'm not on facebook, but I check the ATS page on there.

Can I just ask, is that church you link to in your profile, completely wooden ?

I'm interested in architecture, and I have to admit that I have a soft spot for wooden churches, such as the kind you get in Scandinavia.

I cant tell you for sure. I added it because a friend suggested I checked it out and have been meaning to go and attend it one day. It does look like a really neat building though.

So is the following, garnered from a large, popular site thread discussing Facebook:

The third person was a relative of my friend and I haven't talked or had any contact with her in 3 years. My email address does not contain my real name, yet facebook's invitation email used my real given name. How the bleep is facebook remembering details like these and connecting people to me like this?

Another freaky thing happened a couple years ago when I joined up. My privacy paranoid friend had set up facebook with completely fake details and absolutely no right to dig through his inbox. The purpose of this account was to just stay in contact with one business friend. Lo and behold. Out of the blue facebook suggested that I might know this person who didn't even have a real name, just this gibberish fake name I remembered from IRC.

I am truly scared about facebook. I know that my experiences only count as anecdotal, but those bleep heads know way more than they have any business knowing. Their databases make scary accurate connections between people based on seemingly very flimsy personal data.

www.reddit.com...

The above is just one of many online comments about Facebook's ability to decipher --- based on a user's false name, false details, etc. --- who their real-life connections are

This is not a good move for ATS!!
I was quite surprised when I pulled up the ATS page and saw that dreaded facebook Blue!!!

This was the last little pocket of on line society that I thought would never see a direct facebook connection given all of the controversy surrounding their practices and data manipulation.

Makes me want to reconsider my future here on ATS.

I think the MAIN reason that we don't want ATS and Fb to collide is the fact that there's so much deviousness asscociated with FB.

I'm genuinely surprised that ATS has ignored the dozens of topics regarding FB on its forums and has decided to use FB as a pedestal to further its own gains. KNOWING that facebook has lied and cheated its way through various privacy issues.

I'll ask again are ANY mods unhappy with this decision?

I've noticed a few mods agreeing with the decision, but none have stepped forward to disagree. Is this a case of the staff sticking together or are the doubters just keeping quiet?

I can almost guarantee you will not
have any mods answer this question
in open forum as they would probably
lose their mod status.

But as i've asked in other threads, mods are entitled to an opinion too right?

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Unless the moderator is specifically responding to a request for input by staff, commenting on the behavior of the posters, etc., or stating he/she is speaking as staff, it should likely be assumed that we are just speaking as any other member in thread posts, by default.

After all it will be the mods who will have to deal with the increase of traffic to this site.

Absolutely massive leap in the wrong direction, i thought from the thread you created discussing whether ATS should delve in to the facebook domain that you would not go down this avenue...obviously i was wrong. In fact i don't even know if i wish to be a member of what this site is quickly becoming, im not simply talking about facebook...but that certainly is the icing on the cake.
But you are a business i guess, the $$$ trumps everything else in the end.

Many staff do not even have a FB account and none of us have been pressured to get one. It has not even been suggested. I can not speak for all of staff, but I do not see why any staff would be unhappy with this. As I said, some simply chose not to have a FB account. There is no reason to be unhappy. Its all choice. Either you sign up or you dont. And some staff dont. Simple!

And its ridiculous to think staff would lose their position for saying whether or not they support it.

Maybe not

And will the anticipated rush of Facebookers compensate for those who'll depart ATS ?

Maybe less mods will be required on ATS ?

I find that difficult to believe

ATS describes itself as an ignorance denying conspiracy site

But you're claiming not to know why any ATS staff would be unhappy with the merge

despite that Facebooks' reputation is lower than dirt with anyone even half-heartedly involved in conspiracies

Believe it or not. We have NOT been suggested to or pressured to sign up with Facebook. And because we all have a CHOICE there is no reason to be unhappy with it. As linked above, a member of the staff already said they will not be creating a FB account.

I have yet to see a reason why people are so concerned with the choices others make. Do it. Dont do it. Wont affect your life or your time here - at all.

Maybe for the same reasons a lot of members have pointed out.

We keep going in circles here:

Let me clarify.

ATS for some is a sanctuary, a place to think about and discuss 'interesting' topics, relatively troll free, relatively maturely and with a relative degree of anonymity.

Facebook on the other hand is a hive of trolls, immature childish people and beyond that it is a hive for data mining, dodgy applications, software and has a record of deception in regards to privacy and software utilisation.

Many ATS topics discuss this in depth.

Why is it so hard for you guys to come to a similar conclusion, that the TWO sites are almost polar opposites?

Yes nobody is forcing anybody to click anything, but on the otherhand once you've become a member of facebook, you get tracked, you get deceived and your details are archived.

EXACTLY this... why is it that WE can figure this out, but the staff can't?

I genuinely don't wanna be one of those guys who says 'I told you so'.

You're responding to your own post, it seems, rather than mine

I didn't comment on whether or not ATS staff were forced or otherwise, re: the merge

My comment addresses the distrust in which Facebook is regarded by anyone even half heartedly involved in conspiracies

ATS describes itself as an ignorance denying conspiracy site

Now we have a supposed conspiracy site merging with one of the biggest conspiracy topics online and off

You say you can't see a contradiction there and say you can't see any reason for any ATS staff to oppose the merge

And I said, I find that difficult to believe, i.e., (1) find it difficult to believe that no ATS staff member would be opposed to the merge and (2) difficult to believe you know of no reason any ATS staff member would be opposed to that merge

Unless what you're actually implying is that ATS staff aren't committed to the slogan 'Deny Ignorance' ? Or have no interest in conspiracies and no real interest in those who patronise this supposed 'consipracy site' ?

Whether people have the choice or not it is irrelevant, the principle of ATS trying to merge itself and members with such a hideous and insidious thing like facebook is utterly reprehensible considering what ATS is supposed to be about.
