Iran launches nuclear fusion program, says atomic energy chief

www.cnn.com

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- The head of Iran's nuclear energy agency announced Saturday that the country had launched a "serious" nuclear fusion research program, according to state-run Press TV.

Ali-Akbar Salehi, the chief of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), said as many as 50 scientists were participating in the research to break into alternative energy, Press TV said.

This is great, and something I was talking about on the boards just last week.

Iran is delving into alternative energy, and if they are succesfull, could perhaps one day lead the world in this sort of technology.

Could you imagine if they were exporting 100% of their oil and using none of it?

It would be one of the most powerful countries in the world almost overnight.

I for one am glad to read this development, I hope Iran is successfull, both with this, and their nuclear energy program.

Thoughts?

All in favor of it. But it's a crap load difficult. You have to have energy already being made to do that sorta stuff. Like how you need a Ferrari to trade for something better.

"bucky balls" induced into extremely cold temperatures with extremely high electrical forces. could give aid to such things, if you are luck enough to do it.

what is the consensus idea if Iran is looking into nuke devlopment vs energy.

The intentions are good but resources way blow expected. Don't you think many other countries are and have been continuously trying for the same expending probably billions of dollars and thousands of scientists? I have no conclusive proof on this but has this not been undertaken by other countries before? I doubt mere 50 scientist can manage to make a breakthrough.

Fusion (for energy) research is difficult. Western countries spend billions in it. So I doubt Iran is going to go anywhere. Fusion probably means atomic bomb for them. They just officialy announced that they are making bombs.

I really think they NEED a nuclear weapon.

Sure people will argue that it will destabilize the reason, but that won't be Iran's fault, it will be Israel's & USA's fault.

The people of Iran, will overthrow this dictator government, but they can't while the rest of the world refuses to help them and looks at them like terrorists.

Imposing sanctions and other vices that hurt only the people, prevent them from doing what needs to be done in order to be a free and democratic society.

Only once they have a stabilizer, such as a nuclear weapon, will the rest of the world leave them alone and then the people can get back to taking their country into their own hands.

That's my humble opinion.

That's AMAZING.

You just pulled a CNN/MSNB/FOX (insert 3 letter agency).

Good job!

You went from taking a story that had NOTHING to do with nuclear weapons, and a topic that had nothing to do with it either.

Then said PROBABLY means bomb for them.

Then afterwards say "They've officialy announced that they are making bombs".

I'd like you to source that comment please, if your going to state it as fact.

You just twisted the facts to suit whatever propaganda you've been fed.

I hope they succeed too.

It would get us off the black stuff in pretty quick order.

The US and the rest of the world would be forced to open up the dark and dusty cupboards and finally get the real energy technology out to the masses.

OK, they'd have to think up a new business model to replace oil, but hey ho, so what? It's not beyond the wit of humanity to reinvent an economy is it?

It's already in the toilet, so may as well make the change now, while it's effects can be mediated.

The other choices are a) Go to war to protect the oil industry b) beat Iran to the 'alternative energy' crown c) carry on as is, and watch Iran and it's friends become wildly powerful and replace the US as a world superpower.

Option C seems daft and shortsighted. Option A, is obviously anticipated by Iran, and will probably have major repercussions for the world, and even then, still may not prevent the technology from becoming mainstream...it may be used as a kind of Iranian ace in the hole. Option B seems the logical route to go. It'll upset the oil barons, but tough...they've enough money for a hundred lifetimes, and they've had long enough at the cookie jar.

I honestly believe that USA, israel and iran are just stupid animals like the rest of human civilization and have not learned anything from the past wars since human existance.

On the contrary.

They've learned from history that wars are VERY profitable enterprises.

If there's any truth to this, then it pretty much guarantees a strike on Iran.

A real alternative to oil will be suppressed by all means by the powers that be.

What's the problem?

I didn't say they are becoming a superpower, i suggested that if the US did not compete in an energy technology race with Iran, and IF Iran succeeded with an alternative energy technology that freed them from a reliance on oil, they could indeed replace the US in terms of a monetary superpower...

You don't agree?

The Tesla car is not a power source. It uses electrical power. If the electricity is from a coal plant, the car will indirectly run on fossil fuels.

What I am talking about is an actual energy source.

Imagine if Iranian scientists had a breakthrough in cold fusion and were building a prototype.

I doubt this is the case though

Wait a minute.

It's a craze.....

Didn't North Korea just announce that THEY have a fusion system already going????

N.Korea boasts success in nuclear fusion
news.yahoo.com

North Korea said Wednesday it has succeeded in nuclear fusion in a "breakthrough" towards the development of new energy sources.
The report in Rodong Sinmun, newspaper of the ruling communist party, made no mention of using the claimed new technology for North Korea's atomic weapons programme.

OMG!

We better get on the ball they may pass us up.

Oh wait... the US, Russians and practically EVERYBODY else on the planet have been after said technology since the 1950s.

The power thats our running our world will never let this happen.

Is that why we are about to be in a war with both Countries?

They really dont want us off oil and oil. Because than crap and tax is pointless. That would put a big stop to there global plan "NWO"

Thats because us western countries feel the need to spend billions on it, how much could it really cost, REALLY COST to do anything? Nothing, thats how much, but people=greed. Did money invent the atom bomb? or did the scientists invent it and the people who supplied the materials decide to charge money?
