It has nothing to do with the people, I am severley germa phobic and I already don't want to leave my house the way it is now, and after this, I don't care if I am bleeding to death, I will never, ever, ever, never seek medical attention EVER!!!! Anyway I can hold my own with fixing myself up and herbal homeopathic remedies as I am pagan, And so goes the same for my children I will take care of them, they will never ever ever see a hospital, doctor, or dentist now!!!!!!!

And they certainly won't be getting any damn vaccinations now!!!!

Personally i think you should not ban a person from entering your country(if he is otherwise eligible) just because he is HIV positive which is non communicable

You sir/ma'am have problems along with the people that agree with you. ATS'ers like to talk about what happens when SHTF. Ok, well if/when that happens, you would undoubtedly be denied entry in many groups and you will see how that feels only in a much more dangerous situation. Karma's a bitch.

Hi OP

1. Stale story, firstly. But anyway…GWB, not Obama, was the one who did this. All Obama did was rubber stamp the deal

2. It was long overdue for repeal. It was an embarrassment to the US. With over 2M US resident citizens infected with HIV, it makes no sense to keep out infected foreigners. The window for any quarantine type stuff closed in 1982, and probably wouldn’t have worked then. Might have worked a bit for some European countries for a few years, but certainly not the US (remember: the US was where this disease was first diagnosed). Ask anyone who knows anything at all about epidemiology

3. HIV is simply not very infectious (thank God). In fact, it's crap at being infective

4. There’s a whole spectrum of nastiness in the secondary care setting to go through before HIV rears its head, starting with the superbugs (MRSA, Super-Strep, C-difficile, TB, and others)…right the way through to the usual suspects: pneumonia, meningitis, septicaemia, salmonella etc. Viruses always come a poor second to bacteria in secondary care

In any case, cheer up! Even if you contracted AIDS because a crazed HIV+ member of secondary care staff (who was himself infected by an HIV+ immigrant he'd treated) buggered you, it’d take HIV twenty to thirty years to kill you. That’s enough to have a life and write your memoirs. Septicaemia, on the other hand, will sort you out in 8 hours flat when all you wanted was your tonsils out.

NB...If you'd completed your nursing training you'd be less scared of this kind of stuff, and more scared of the right things to be scared of....

Hi OP

Hardly civil of me to mention buggery, so no need to compliment me on my manners

I'm not germaphobic myself. But I think that germaphobia is probably one of the higher quality phobias, given that it might prolong your life (and that of others). Good luck with it.

Americans are very big on personal rights and freedoms.

So if some leper, or plague infected person, or some aids infected queer decides to pass on his/her disease, it would be infringing his or her rights to prevent it.

And while you yourself are slowly dying a lingering death, it is your absolute right to pass it on to as many other Americans as you possibly can.

Anything else would be denying personal freedom.

Are you insane?? What about my right to stay alive and healthy?

As far as HIV goes, in most states it is illegal to knowingly pass the HIV virus to another. Make no mistake about it, it happens more often that you might think. I personally can recall a manhunt that was going on in the state of South Carolina. It was all over the local news, every single day, multiple times a day. Police were searching for one guy who tested HIV positive and was passing it on to anyone he could. He would never tell his victims that he was HIV positive, his goal was simply to infect as many other people as he could.

There are also many more cases like it....

California

Virginia

and this issue is not limited to just the US. Nor is it limited to "poor people". Here is one from Germany The accused is from an all girl band that has topped the charts over there.

This issue crosses all walks of live, from civilian to military as shown by this article coming out of Fort Bragg in North Carolina

Iowa

Missorri

and this list goes on and on and on. Taking another person's life is wrong. It makes no difference to me if you do it by shooting them in the head, or infecting them with HIV, the end result is you are taking a life. That makes you a murderer by definition, and therefor you give up your rights.

Actually... with regard to haemophilia... all of the younger generation haemophiliacs (post 1992 birth) should not be infected with HIV. Except in the 3rd world, blood products are now heat treated, and then either "solvent detergent treated" or "monoclonal antibody purified". Many if not most haemophiliacs are no longer receive human blood at all; they get "recombinant hamster blood" which carries no HIV risk.

There was a wave of haemophiliacs in the early 80's that were infected with HIV mostly because the testing methods and purification methods were fringe technology at the time the disease first manifested. Many of them are dead now.

So don't be afraid of giving a young hemophiliac a hug!

...just don't squeeze to tight.

fyi

carry on with your rant...

But it is a virus, not a bacteria or germ. And it is passed through sex or exchange of blood. Somehow I get an inlking that you don't donate blood. ;P

I used to work in a busy city teaching hospital myself, (in biomedical engineering).
I had zero direct contact with patients, but was well aware of all the problems hospitals have, it was all around me every single day.

There have been many cases of people working on (repairing) medical equipment such as centrifuges and dialysis machines that have contracted aids and hep C.
That is why I never again worked in the biomedical field. The constant ever present danger of it all just freaked me out.

I don't blame you quitting nursing, it is now a very high risk profession.

And anyone that wishes to come to permanently live here in Australia needs to have a clean financial history, a clean criminal record, and a clean medical history.
When you can pick and choose between tens of thousands of applicants for a limited intake quota, why pick dead beat, criminal, or diseased people when you can have the very best ?

Discrimination ?
Hell yes !!!!!

In the US we have a big copper statue with a bronze plaque securely mounted that clearly reads:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips.

"GIVE ME YOUR TIRED, YOUR POOR,
YOUR HUDDLED MASSES YEARNING TO BREATHE FREE,
THE WRETCHED REFUSE OF YOUR TEEMING SHORE.
SEND THESE, THE HOMELESS, TEMPEST-TOST TO ME,
I LIFT MY LAMP BESIDE THE GOLDEN DOOR!

We call her Lady Liberty.

For me it isn't about the infectious nature of the virus, it is about the cost of treating those who come here with it!

The ongoing anti viral cocktails that are needed, frequent monitoring of blood levels, treating the cancer and pneumonia common to those with AIDS or AIDS related complex is staggering. We have a crisis in the inner city communities with the number of infections rising all the time. The last thing we need is to have to care for foreigners too.

This is not about gay rights, or about fear of spread of disease, MERSA and ORSA are bigger issues in hospitals that HIV is. IT is purely about the cost. Remember we are already operating on China's money!

And that my friend is why America today is so totally screwed up.
Anything goes in America, absolutely anything.

Yet you totally despise other nations that do enforce laws, have moral standards, and discriminate against evil.

Americans howl about equal rights for immorality, corruption and pure evil.

That is what you want, and that is what you now have to live with.
America is exactly what Americans have made it.

You people, who think this is ok, are living in some imaginary dream world.
The people of our country cannot be forced to nursemaid the entire world!
The USA is already hated, regardless of everything decent we have done. Only the negative is focused on.
Now, we are having our arms twisted into care-taking for an entire nation that, instead of fixing the problems that exist in their own country, are bringing them into ours.
To all of you super-liberals, pack up, and take your good intentions south of our border, and try to actually fix the problem.
Do not force your will on our way of life.
Whether it is popular or not, my daughter comes first to me. These people will have to solve their problems on their own soil.

I have , all throught his thread. What is the major concern for me is cross contamination, for instance someone visiting with HIV gets into a wreck, I get into some kind of accident, they're bleeding, I am bleeding; the nurse leaves room whatever where they are being treated with a minute drop of blood on her hand or gloves or whatever, she thinks she's ok, heck she may not even know the person's status yet; she comes into my room, touches me to examine my wounds, and voila it's in my wound, direct line to my blood stream. Now you have to imagine that of course it would surely have to happen in a short amount of time. But, this is not unheard of. Also with more people being under health coverage via the healthcare bill= hospitals over loaded, nurses and doctors over worked, tired and careless increasing the possibility of accidents. Maybe it may seem crazy or unlikely, but it is not unheard of. Accidents like this can and do happen.

If you had my luck you'd understand. Just imagine Murphy's law to the bizzilionth degree!!!!

[edit on 26-6-2010 by ldyserenity]

Well with your luck you are screwed, because there are already more than a million in America that are HIV positive. So you are upset that you may get in a situation where you are bleeding and next to you another person are bleeding and the nurse is using the same gloves back and forth.

To be seriously honest I think you need to worry about a million (billion?) other things than this, and truly I’m not trying to argue or debate you on this.

I see this kind of like freedom of speech in if we start limiting some speech than all speech is at risk. In this case you isolate limit people with positive HIV in fear than all diseases can be added to the list.

Well it was first put into place out of fear and the lack of knowledge of HIV, but things have changed in 20 plus years...

I remember when they had an aids conference here many years ago and people attending it that were HIV positive were denied visas...kind of over the top, plus do you think all of a sudden we will be flooded with some huge wave of people with HIV?
