wow that's exactly what it looks like. I've never seen anything like that in my life before. If it wasn't on CNN I wouldn't think it's real but kinda hard to argue that.... Especially with the other pics of the other sinkholes but the one from the OP is phenominal! Good job WarHampster!!!!!

Edit: to note these pics aren't from the current sinkhole. but from similar types in the past.

Umm, just to deny ignorance. That is the same hole, from two different angles..

You, by saying these are common, are trying to downplay this hole.

Show me a round sinkhole with no bottom...

Something very bizarre about this hole.

My god, some of the responses on this thread show a 3rd grade level of knowledge mixed with head-up-the-arse intellect coupled with total and complete denial of the state of our civilization and its course. thank you for ruining my ATS session

+1

Thank god (if there is one) that I'm not the only one thinking this. For sure this looks freaky just like some kind of hell mouth (my ex made me watch buffy, honest). However there is nothing here that is new to science. Has no one heard of aquifers, underground river systems, groundwater? Even large parts of the sahara have water underneath them. When torrential rain inundates such underground systems sink holes happen. I'm getting more and more embarassed to log in here. I had to stop citing ATS as a source because of the increasing levels of mental retardation evident on this site.

What I'm interested in is finding this spot on google earth to see if two buildings, one of which was allegedly 5 storeys high really did disappear into it. It's on the ciudad de Guatemala intersection but I can't find that.

ohh good people please.. be so patient and do read all the pages before posting into threads, its so annoying to read the same comments and questions all along the thread, just becouse sm1 wont read even the second post and just replies directly on the 10th page.

Its like sort of arabian bazzar here, have some responsibility or we get overhelmed (mainly considering amounth of users here) with posts, wasting pages and pages, taking time to get trough..
and with more people it gets even worse so it becames useless.. at least for me who doesnt have patient to read more than several pages of the same stuff just to be sure nothing is overlooked.

There is no mystery here folks. Sink holes and very common in South America, due to the existence of huge networks of underground caves and natural formations which carry water to the sea. Many South American populations actually rely on these as a source of natural clean water. However, these pristine environments are now starting to become polluted due to human activity ....which is another thread and also a shame...making the water now undrinkable. What you are seeing is I believe a very common thing. The ceiling of these caverns and cave systems can often collapse. In these cases where you have what appears to be a straight drop into nothing, is an example of pot holes that may have been covered over centuries ago, and just have collapsed.
So intense rain fall, saturating the soil, and maybe with the decrease / increase in air pressure due to a storm is enough combined force to cause a collapse.
In the UK the same thing can happen, mainly with disused mine shafts and so on. But in the peak district we have many similar formations. I have been caving myself there and seen many similar things, and seen many cave structures that look like they could collapse and form a vertical funnel. But there are vast subterranean rivers , some ridiculously large as well, in South America that would explain this.
So, don’t worry...its not HARRP remote drilling by bouncing waves off the Moon. Or an alien invasion akin to War of the Worlds. Or the Freemasons using Mind Powers to create underground lairs. Sorry for the sarcasm, but some people here on ATS make mockery oh so easy.

Maybe ATS does not stand for what we all though it stood for.

I think it should be renamed : "Americas Top Stupid"
.....embrace ignorance...deny rationality

I heard it was a 300 foot deep sinkhole. Any data to support that ?

The 2007 hole was about 100 meters (330ft). Theres a couple youtube links on page seven near the bottom. The top link is video taken from the bottom of that hole.

The "official" depth for this recent hole is around 31.25 meters (94.5ft)

Look at the surrounding building on the newest pictures compared to those two.

They are clearly NOT in the same location nor the same hole.

Looks like the same hole chap. Rotated Anti clock wise.

Still good example though. I would have to say I realy would not want that thing opening up outside my front door. But there you go. Underground Rivers and Cave Systems and Aquifers, equals easy access to clean water (Well it used to be clean anyway) , equals a natural place to start building a population, equals big unexpected things.

deffinetly
grats.

if sm1 is interrested in hollow earth thing i found nice summary www.endtimeprophecy.net...

note hollow earth does not have to necessarily mean fully hollow, there can just be few holes,
Striking was Byrds journal, cos i have read a different book from him, that was in perfectly serious scientific tone. But this his observation is suposed to happn in his late life in fifties

So they're saying that this happened because of a tropical storm? Seems a little extreme but I suppose the weather works in catastrophic ways.

Everyone, this is a photo, taken from an opposite angle (from what I can tell) of a sink hole that happened in 2007!!!
It can be viewed along with other amazing natural and manmade holes at :

www.google.com...://listverse.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/guatemala-sink-hole-2.jpg&imgrefurl=http://dreamerweb.blogspot.com/20 09/11/amazng-holes-in-face-of-earth.html&h=467&w=700&sz=105&tbnid=PCoM9HT226yehM:&tbnh=93&tbnw=140&prev=/images%3Fq%3DGuatemala%2Bhole&hl=en&usg=__tGP Abw2IHdAACs8YPekr67PTRP0=&ei=zC0FTOPBOIy6NrSS4Ts&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=6&ct=image&ved=0CCgQ9QEwBQ

"In 2007, a 300 foot deep sinkhole swallowed a dozen homes in Guatemala – killing 2 and causing thousands to be evacuated. The sinkhole was caused by rains and an underground sewage flow."
