Tropical storm leaves more than 115 dead in Central America

www.cnn.com
SCROLL DOWN FOR PICTURE FROM CNN

The office of Guatemala's president handed out this aerial view of a crater that opened up after Agatha hit.

At least 115 people have died after a tropical storm battered Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador over the weekend, officials in those countries reported.

Guatemala was hit hardest, with at least 92 deaths, 54 people missing and 59 injured, emergency officials said. Nearly 112,000 people have been evacuated and more than 29,000 are living in temporary shelters, Guatemalan President A.

Yes it is very symmetrical.

The edges are also very smooth.

They say a storm made this? I find that hard to believe.

I've never seen anything like it personally. If it was a storm it sure must have been a nasty one to inflict that sort of damage.

Reminds me of the

That hole looks to symmetrical to be caused by a natural occurrence - such as a storm. Something else (artificial, ie., man-made) had to at least contribute to such a freak occurrence. It looks like a giant drill went strait into the ground. This really bears watching IMHO.

Got to admit: that is one scary lookin' hole.

Looks like someone took a some colossal drill and just drilled through the street. Quite impressive. Raw and scary.

AVP came to mind here, where the hole gets bored through the ice.

My gf is scouring the internet for any more info

If you do a google search on sink holes in south America you would be surprised how many pictures ive just found of very similar ones 0_O

Have to add to from the aerial picture....you cant even see the bottom... my rough estimate to the darkness where you cant see anything else in the hole is around 100-150 meters

Looks like there's a cavity down there, who the hell knows. I've never heard of a storm doing that though.

Wow now that is a big hole! As for it being perfectly symmetrical it seems most sink holes are, so nothing suspicious there.

Well done on your first post

Another view of this hole found here:

Guatemala death toll from Agatha rises to 63

GUATEMALA CITY: At least 63 people are confirmed dead in Guatemala after Tropical Storm Agatha slammed the country, government officials said on Sunday. Chimaltenango Department Governor Erick De Leon told Reuters there were 50 deaths in his jurisdiction that had not previously been reported by the national government.

Tht's surreal and this pic seems to show some of the same white piping in the OP pic..

wow.

When i see holes in the ground on this scale, I can see why ancient man thought they were portals to the underworld. They just give off a diabolical feeling looking into the depths of the Earth like that.

Any idea about depth and width? I saw this on CNN and gladly found this post here because I know there will be more interesting views and opinions then on the CNN comments.

I want to know how deep that goes. Reminds me of Fantastic Four II with the Silver Surfer drillin' holes... watch out Galactus is coming!

That is absoluteley incredible I've never seen or heard of anything like this being created during a storm before.

Might the area have been built over an old mine of some kind ... even if this were the case the hole is perfectly round and smooth as other poster's have mentioned.

I wonder how deep it is ???

Thanks for sharing this OP
