I have always been leery of Facebook and the other one (I can't think of the name) because of privacy concerns, so I was never tempted to join for that reason. I will not participate in anything Facebook.

However, Conspiracy Book sounds like a great idea! I do get more social interaction here on ATS than I do elsewhere on the Internet, so I'm satisfied with how it is now, and I may not join Conspiracy Book, but if I were to ever join a social network, I would feel a lot safer knowing you guys were hosting it.

Ah an ATS project "Blue Book". (I think that would go down better) I like the idea, kinda link our profiles in with threads more.

I love facebook, and I will love TinBook too.

I dont care about privacy concerns on Facebook or anywhere.

Why?

By using them I am already aware of what I put out there and am under the assumption it is available to everyone. That is exactly what appeals to me.

Who cares if someone makes a profile of my web footprint? Good I am glad it did not wash away I want my voice to be heard by everyone.

I have used the internet to publish my opinions since the early nineties, and I hope I will still be shouting them from the rooftops of the web when my fingers ache to type.

The whole I use the INTERNET and I want privacy is the biggest oxymoronic statement I have came across in some time. If you value privacy you do not use the internet.

I say....Go for both of those ideas!

I forgot to add I have compiled rich dossiers on many many people over the years, simply by following a web footprint. It is fun fascinating brain work, try it some time.

My vote is most certainly for "TinBook". Although, I think it would be sweeter to name it "Face Top Secret". FTS, what up?

Seriously though, TinBook is a great idea. My wife and I have an account on Facebook. She uses it a lot more than I do... and I think the site is junk.

Alternatively, if you were to make a Facebook page instead, you would get a lot more attention from a lot more people. But...... if you pay attention to Facebook, you might realize you'll get attention from people you don't necessarily want around.

One way or another, this whole idea is going to change greatly how ATS works.

I already have friends on facebook that are members of ATS. We added each other by way of U2U's here, so, I think it's a gread idea to have a link where people can automatically do it through ATS.

Meh, as far as security concerns? Don't put anything out there you don't want people to know!

If you're an ATS member without a Facebook page, have these recent news articles and related information caused you to no longer consider using Facebook (if you ever did at all)?

I deleted my Facebook profile for the privacy issues stated in the OP (and the fact that everyone is just in everyone elses business all the time) - It only takes full effect if you do not log into your account for two weeks. I have done that and never looked back....

I may consider using a social networking tool if it was safer- but these days, how do you even know? What people promise and what people do are two very different things- so I'm sure anyone can understand the trust issues that go along with something like this.

I think it might be cool to see status updates that don't say - "It's the weekend baby" or some other superficial junk you see on Facebook...

Hmmmm...maybe.

If ATS brings Facebook onboard I will be gone from here for good.

Never used Facebook and never will use it.

Tinbook sounds ok. Dunno if I would use.

I have a Facebook account, but I limit my friends list to family and people I went to school with. When they did their privacy settings update I went and set everything to private so that only people on my friends list there can see anything. So if ATS were on Facebook, I wouldn't use it. I like to keep my personal life and ATS life separate.

As for the 'Tinbook' or whatever you decide to call it, I'd check it out and consider using it so long as I don't have to tie it to my real identity. You all are great about keeping our info secret, but I'm still a bit paranoid like that.

I think its a great idea and people would love it, my only concern is that as ATS moves closer to the social network side of thinks and the site gets cooler and cooler, then people will just join because their friends have etc. and so forth, and it will end being filled with drivel.

I think one of the best features of ATS is that it is simple, its formal and it is moderated well, allowing valuable and innotive information. If we go to more of the social networking side I cant see how the intelligent discussions will stick, and the majority of topics will be up to date news stories accompanied by bickering.

In saying all that, as long it is only an addition to the site and it is not driven by it, the more networking the better!

I deleted my FB account earlier this year, as did my girlfriend for many reasons, not least because of the security concerns. I would be willing to give the ATS version a try and if you guys run it like you say you will then I imagine it will become pretty popular with anyone who has enough brain cells to stop playing farmville for 2 seconds and think for themselves.

You should call it ATSspace or ATSpace though, tinbook sounds a bit dull in my opinion.. What about denyspace eh...eh? alternabook?

Status Update: Chonx is tired and his imagination seems to be failing...

I don't know what any of this means as I don't have a facebook or myspace page ...

Will it be easy to use for old folks like me?

Is Conspiraceh Friend Finder still a go?

So the question is, if we were to launch such a new site/service, would you use it. And if you did, would it cause you to abandon Facebook?

Yes I would, as far as ditching FB, no I am going to keep that around as long as my kids are on it and close family. I am by no means an active user on FB. However, a lot of family and a few friends are on there and it makes for a good resource for communication as well as keeping abreast of their daily lives.

As far as the social stand-point I would be more apt to use "Tinbook" for social interaction as ATS and my present/future friends is something that I do quite frequently anyway on the boards & in chat. Great idea!

Also, even though I know some people would still not take advantage even if they had the means, but to be able to have a resource to put a face to a lot of the members here would be a nice addition similar to how you can put your picture on FB. The photo upload we have on ATS could be used for that yes, but I don't think that was the intended format. A face to the name I think would strengthen the membership as it would involve a little more humility and not just an avatar.

Don't get me wrong I like the concept of my avatar as my identity on ATS. However, if a social aspect were to be an addition to ATS, we'd now have an avenue to post a pic of the face that's attached to the posts.

Edit to add: I do have ATS Live on my FB, but no one has ever asked about it directly. I only added it to FB because I am that big a fan. Otherwise I keep the two quite separated.

In my opinion this site is already a networking site why would you want to make another one "facebook" style? Facebook is geared towards advertising...your company..yourself..stupid celebrities...etc

If ATS became more like that then whats the point exactly? we are not exactly into revealing our identities here and we are not here to network we're here to read & comment.. how it is right now works pretty well...

Maybe you can take ideas from Facebook and incorporate it into ATS...like maybe the profiles section could use a little facelift or there can be certain groups people can join

No, Im not interested in Facebook. I had an account which I never did anything with and so closed it. Their policy, terms and conditions, no responsibilty, hackers and security ... definately, I'm not interested.
Im about to close my Twitter account due to every Twitter being achived by the US Library of Congress ...
www.loc.gov...

As for Facebook connections:

I would also be hesitant to use the ATS Tinbook site, but I'd rather see what its terms and conditions, outlay, and ease of use were before signing on.
I spend enough time of the internet as it is - less is more at the moment.
Thanks

Integration with FB itself would make me very reluctant to continue visiting ATS, which would be an enormous shame. It is a powerful resource, I like and respect the people here, and have had many engaging discussions here. I would hate to have to discontinue my participation here because of privacy concerns.

I would be all for ATS having its own proprietary social networking services, provided they are private safe, and not in any way integrated with FB itself.

Hi, Skeptic,

I personally would LOVE a way to meet others, socially, who are of the conspiracy mind-set. The one thing I don't like about ATS is that there are all these cool people posting great things, but I never get to meet any of them in a social setting. Even a social media site would be a step in the right direction.

I'm not a paranoid person, so I'm not too worried about data mining, etc... If someone wants to find something about you, these days, it's not that hard. You pretty much have to be a hermit or a spy to be off the radar these days.

So, I for one, would love a social media site attached to ATS. I know that some of the more paranoid people on ATS will not go for it, but.....who cares. I don't really care to hang out/talk with paranoid people, anyway!

Thanks.

Bill, would T&C apply fully to this new social network expansion? Specifically regarding offensive language.

Absolutely.

The one thing we've always done here at ATS is seek to improve the perception of people who engage in "alternative" topics. Anyone who prefers gratuitous vulgarities and reflexive insults isn't serious about these topics, they're only interested in boosting their own ego. Those types would not be welcome, just as they're not here on ATS.
