Etna's eruptive activity within the Bocca Nuova is continuing without showing any signs of ending soon.

This might lead up to much more spectacular scenes.
At the moment incandescent bombs are frequently thrown to heights of tens of meters above the crater rim.
There was another smallish quake today.

The only place I'm seeing her 'action' is on your posts (thank you) and the local news! But she's as beautiful as ever!
Thank you!

From what is says you can get right up close and personal with the new 'mouth'. I'll look into this one for sure!

The tremor graphs look to be ticking upward.

Etna seems to have changed--I don't know enough about her past behavior to be certain. But something seems different.

At the moment this is Strombolian activity and small lava flows from the Bocca Nuova which has been going for 3 weeks
This ended early on 24 July 2012. However on 25 July, there were many small ash emissions. Experts say this might be from explosions as magma sinks within the conduit, and maybe also collapse of the cone that had formed around the active vent in the past three weeks.
This morning, activity within the Bocca Nuova seems to have resumed, and throughout the day appears to have reached the highest levels of the new period of activity initiated on 2 July 2012.
We can wait and see what the night cams bring. There has been a small quake today, I will post details of that soon.
The ECPNZ Tremore vulcanico did have a fault in it but pressure did rise a lot today. Plenty of smoke and ash at the moment.
Try to keep you updated but this is a new thing.
The largest eruption of the Bocca Nuova to date, in October-November 1999, led to the filling and overflowing of the crater.

Very interesting all the way around.
The EQ's.
The activity.

And yes, this can all be summed up with science and statistics and visiting the past - but my gut? Tells me - as you've posted - there's something different going on.

I saw 'something' this morning but couldn't get to a camera. Tomorrow morning I'm taking a friend to the hospital and I HOPE to get some pictures from a different angle.

Between now and then? Smashing job all!!!

It looks like over the next couple of weeks I'll be leaving Etna in your more than capable hands! I've a trip across the water to make and I'm not sure how long I'll be off-line from ATS but I know I'll definitely not be taking up close and personal pics of Etna for at least 2-3 weeks.

I hope she stays quiet while I'm gone - for many reasons!

Take care all and I hope to see you soon.

In the mean time I'll post the last few pics I have to keep things right up to date - and then be off!

peace

Safe trip my friend. May the wind be at your back so that you may walk brave and tall to deal with what ever awaits you on your travels. Will wait with bated breath for your return. (p.s. - if she's gonna blow, I hope she does so while your out of town ;-) not that you want to miss it - but we would miss you otherwise :-)).

Just to keep you updated.
There is a fire in the Etna forest at the moment.
Un disastro in diretta. Bruciano i boschi dell'Etna.
Thirty children between six and eight years in a Boy Scout camp on Mount Etna were threatened by a huge fire that has developed in a wooded area where they were camped. Before the flames licked the refuge all the scouts, were rescued, that goodness.
Here is a webcam of the fire.

Another update. The fire on the cam is a different one to the Boy Scouts. Getting more info now.

Just in from my friend Turi.
This fire and the other were started deliberately. I cannot understand why some people want to destroy beauty. This nearly cost 30 little lives.
Rant over.
Can't add the vid so here is the link

I'm wondering if these man made fires (shame on you!!!! + 110 x infinity and beyond - helped to trigger the new event... or was this/these shi* ba** hoping it would... and who did it is the question.. I've been following quakes and volcanoes for 20 something years.. lots of thoughts go through my head.. would heat from a man made fire cause a change in barometric pressure - which in the case of a active system cause eruptive event? Sorry, thinking out loud. Watched many bore holes in long valley that pressure dropped just prior to quake when things were amiss there = questioned the lvo on this and They blew it off.. hmmm. - must ponder this more now again.. Thanks for the updates!

I don't think so. But to set fire to a forest that beautiful is horrid.

Thank you all for the updates. I'm not sure I should have read them though - being stuck here on the other side of the world.
Obviously my computer is working.
I'll keep coming back for more from you all.
Thanks again -

And news for Etan? I did (finally) talk to a local who didn't tell me about the fires but said those earthquakes are being felt. *OUCH*!!!

Take care all I will update and look for updates as I can.

hugs
