one reason for 'sky changing colors' might be the green and blue flashes from detonating power line transformers as they fail (begin to melt) from short circuit overloads..from downed wires..

(Aluminum core transformers give little color compared to the lovely blues and greens of copper LINKK)

Not implying that the earth does not generate tremendous dc potentials during stress and fracture... those peizoelectric effects are known just extrordinarily fickle to try to measure... just say'in...
