Yep, just saw this pop on my equake alert. Man, 8.5 is HUGE!! Checking out the surrounding areas via Google Maps, it "looks" to be a fairly sparsely populated area, mostly agricultural, but something that big is certainly going to be felt over a very large area.

Good luck to those unfortunate to live nearby....

8.5 not likely that this isn't going to be devastating...

Wow, that must be pretty frightening.... I've never experienced an earthquake, but damn, a 8.5... well maybe it'll go down, but still can't go down that much...

The largest earthquake ever recorded in history was a 9.5 in Chile in 1960.

The earthquake's rupture zone was 800 km long, stretching from Talca (35° S) to Chiloé Archipelago (43° S). The rupture velocity has been estimated as 3.5 km per second.

I think I heard this one was 250 miles away from Santiago.

Oh wow.. and 8.5 is absolutely huge.

some of you may not know how the scale actually works. It's not like a hurricane where you move into a different category from a small mph change with no change really noticed.
wiki richter scale

According to Wiki, there's only 1 per year at this size recorded per year and is a great magnitude greater than a 7. I truly hope this is as far from as many people as possible.

Yeah they changed it at EMSC... it's now 8.3... confirmed.

This is kinda scary...

I think we'll see a bunch of big earthquakes and big solar storms, peaking mid-2012 to mid-2013...
