To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #2 issued 02/26/2010 at 11:52PM PST

A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

A tsunami has been generated that could potentially impact the U.S. west coast, British Columbia, and Alaska. The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center is investigating the event to determine the level of danger. More information will be issued as it becomes available.

A tsunami has been observed at the following sites:

Location Lat. Lon. Time Amplitude
------------------------ ----- ------ ------- -----------

83min Talcahuano C 36.7S 73.1W 0716UTC 1.15M/3.8FT
45min Valparaiso C 33.0S 71.4W 0706UTC 1.29M/4.2FT
Juan Ferdandez C 33.617S 78.83W 0.19M/0.6FT

Time - Time of measurement.
Amp. - Tsunami amplitudes are measured relative to normal sea level. It is NOT crest-to-trough wave height. Values are given in both meters (M) and feet (FT).

At 10:34 PM Pacific Standard Time on February 26, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.6 (REVISED FROM 8.5) occurred near the coast of central Chile . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

I think alot of of the newer buildings and buildings that house major businesses will have been built with higher earthquake specs in this area since this was the site of the biggest recorded EQ.

My concern is the lower income areas and communities that will be affected from this.

I know they already said at least one bridge has collapsed as well. I really think there is going to be alot of widespread damage discovered after the sun comes up in the area.

HAARP was dead silent. Looks like the real deal. Hope Phage can clarify some stuff we could expect due to the CME. Which he states has not yet arrived.

Not sure if I could call an earthquake of this size in a city of 900,000 exciting... concerning most definitely.. but exciting may not be the right choice of words.

I can't imagine being in an EQ of this magnitude, a tense situation indeed.

Reporting 2 deaths, I think in Santiago. Just had a strong aftershock, know not unusual but hope they are only aftershocks.

like it or not disasters and accidents excite people and cause them to stay glued to the news. not to say people are happy to see it but it is natural to have your adrenaline go up in the face of doom.

Not sure my adrenaline is up, I am feeling very sad and upset about this, still upset over the Haiti quake, what is going on, on our planet, know we are used to having hurricanes one after another but not quakes of this magnitude so close together.

I agree, some don't bother to do a search before they put up a thread, I don't get it..

So true, although I can be guilty of that myself. To be fair this is a pretty big story so multiple threads are to be expected. It would just be nice to see this jumped on quickly and combined into one thread so the most accurate information is available.

there is simply no reason there should be multiple threads on something breaking like this. it is not very difficult to click the recent posts button. sometimes i think people do it on purpose just to troll. oh well. i hope galapagos animals don't get tsunamied.
