I've actually went through and read a lot more of what you have to say and I will say that I don't believe you are a racist. I do however feel that you are close-minded.

I actually do think that the white apologists are displaying a form of racism. Not to mention it is hella self aggrandizing on many levels.

One, they lump ALL white people together, and pretend we are all one group of people with one evil agenda, and that they, (and those like them, others who support the _________ race, are somehow exceptions to the evil white agenda.) Judging people by the color of their skin alone, rather than considering them individually, is racism. So, they are being racist against other whites.

At the same time, they are judging all black people on their skin color. Attributing victimhood to blacks across the board, without know THEM individually, either.

Thirdly, making statements along the line of, "we have to help them" or "we should let them" are statements of superiority, disguised as kindness. You have to think you are pretty hot stuff to "let" a whole group of people have or do anything. Or to think that the color of YOUR skin somehow gives you the ability to "help" someone with another skin color.

The whole point of doing away with racism is not to give blacks an advantage in certain areas of life. Thats pro-black racism. The whole point of doing away with racism is to give individuals of all skin colors an equal shot at life AS FAR AS THEIR SKIN COLOR IS CONCERNED.

This does not mean that all individuals will have an equal shot at life in general. Those who come from good educated families will have a better chance. Those who come from families that have more money will have a better chance. If you are handsome or beautiful, you will have a better chance. If you are tall and athletic, you will have a better chance. If you are very intelligent, you will have a better chance.

Doing away with racism as an institution will not make everyone have an equal shot at life. It will just mean that your skin color will not be the thing that will hold you back. AND, no one is pretending that there are no white racists. Of course there are. But there are laws in place to deal with them if they attempt to use their racism to hold you out of jobs. (Same with sexism and discrimination against the disabled.)

Those who feel that all whites are privileged are delusional. It simply isnt true.

Those who feel that any black person has it worse than any white person is delusional. It simply isnt true.

And the line of reasoning itself is racist. Just the fact that they would make blanket generalizations based on skin color shows their true colors. Individual cases need to be judged individually. Thats the whole point of ending racism in the first place.

The girls who won WON, what does it matter what color they are.
When will we be all the same? The blacks that were brought over as slaves were slaves. Anyone bought and sold were slaves. The blacks in america havent been slaves for generations now. If you are down trodden if you are bothered by racism it is your fault. You are free, you are allowed to do anything any one else is. You are allowed in any place you want. you are allowed to be anything you want. You are being given special status amongst americans because of it. But what have alot of the people learned? if it doesnt go the way you want its racism.. it is human nature the more they are given the more they feel entitled to right or wrong. Instead of complaining about your lot in life change it. There are many sucessful minority people. The difference in them is they quit blameing other people and got on with living on thier own terms. I am Metis, I could of fell into the trap of many of my relatives and blamed all my problems on my upbringing or my ancestory. Instead I started a business and after 16 years of hard slogging I have a good business. I guess all Im trying to say is white black green yellow we are all the same now. just because your great great grandmother was a black slave or a Snake indian doesnt mean an 18 year old person deserves something for it, they dont deserve any special recognition. it was wrong and its over. Make something of yourselves. This goes for any minority, religion, we have laws to protect people if needed. Get an education. get the elders to set a good example. have heros if that is what is needed, but do it .... Speacial rules for certain people only hinders that type of person. as others will resent it. If we cant get along here is an idea, The CFL is a good example, in Canada the Candian football league has an award for the most valuable player. Then they have an award for the most valuble Canadian player. The best player of any nationality can win, but only a Canadian player wins the best Canadian player award

I was also going to mention that the people that are being blamed for peoples problems, are of the generations that have fought and brought about the changes in society that has allowed equal rights for everyone. So the minorities blameing the people of today for racism against any type of person is wrong as this generation is the one trying to correct the past wrongs. Which brings me back to, get on with your own life and make it better because you are the only one that can do that. Anougher race is not here to make you happy you are the only one responsible for that.

I'm tired of racism! I HATE IT! ESPECIALLY FROM THE CONSTITUTION. But I am not just talking about whites or black or whatever! I AM TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE AS IN EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RACISM IS WHY WE CAN'T ADVANCE AS A CIVILIZATION. I don't believe in most conspiracies but maybe because of our own ignorance the government doesn't want to show us the great technologies we have. NO MORE RACISM. WE CAN STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's just my opinion folks. I knew after reading responses you wouldn't like it.

No one answered the actual question I had though... who here actually knows the history of step?

Who said white people can't have their own culture? They do. We own the United States, all of Europe, the international banking system... that's just off the top of my head. Just because someone cries racism it doesn't mean it is.

Put away your race cards and let's call things like they are.

White culture doesn't have a part in tribal Africa (other than stealing from it). So why are they competing in what boils down to a tribal ritual competition?

If white fraternities and sororities want to compete in something like this the very least they could do is source some Nordic rhythm and rituals...

The entire point of the equality movement is that people should not be excluded from anything or judged differently because of the colour of their skin.

You are totally missing this point.

If white girls want to dance like "tribal africans in a tribal african" dance competition, they have the right to do so and be judged on the merits of their performance, not the colour of their skin.

You have got to be kidding me. After watching those two groups compete it is obvious the winners got shafted. From watching dance for an entire lifetime, there really wasn't even a close tie. No where close. That was pure domination in choreography and the dance itself. In a competition like that, choreography plays such a major role, as well as practice to improve your timing, etc. Its a shame when the obvious winner can't claim their prize alone because of corporate fear of boycotts. Its really embarassing. I apologize to the rest of the world for this ignorance.

White people didn't steal from tribal Africa they bought from it. Africans rounded up their own people and sold them on the open market but they don't like to talk about that because it takes away from their victim status. The African slave trade was in business a thousand years before the so-called evil white man got involved. And here we are in the year 2010 and blacks are still enslaving blacks in the Sudan.
White people aren't the only people in the U.S>
The highest grossest box office talent is Will Smith, the top paid athlete is Tiger Woods, the highest paid and most respected tv personality is Oprah. Blacks in this country are the richest and freest blacks in the world.

These are just freaking kids man who entered a dance contest. They never tried to make the dance their own or that culture their own jeez. They had an opportunity to win a scholarship and they worked hard and went for it. They should be commended for not being out on the streets selling drugs.

The worst part about this is the message being sent to the black students and the black community at large. The message being:

We're awarding $100,000 dollars to the white chicks for being the most talented but we're also awarding $100,000 dollars to the black chicks just because they're black. It's insulting, patronizing and tells them they don't even need to compete, they're going to get the condolence prize anyway.

The black sorority sisters should pitch a bitch while signing and cashing that check.

When I spoke to context I was speaking about the whole series. Which was evident in my previous post.

But when I spoke I wasn’t speaking about the whole series but one episode in particular that is applicable to this topic.

Also, I am not arguing with you over the sociological phenomenon. What I described is what you were talking about. Did I remember the exact term seven years after I took the course? No, I did not.

So don’t go telling people about intro this or intro that if you don’t even remember what it is you’re talking about.

People don't get involved because they believe someone else has or will. They also avoid interfering for fear of retribution of the crowd. It is all part of the same phenomenon/syndrome.

As previously stated, some of the instances they showed didn’t have a lot of people present. Moreover, these were not emergencies. Do you understand now?

That you can prove there is one idiot in a crowd and they chose to show that one because of the reaction it would garner.

Yes, it proves that there is one idiot in the crowd, but it also shows that people are willing to downplay things and attribute it to a “race card” without looking at the entire situation. In other words, what he did is no different from what some of the members in this thread are doing. So when you say “All that clip shows is that people don't get involved” you should also look at context, his actions and what his actions actually say.

Does profiling happen at times? Yes it does. Why did the producers chose to do a clip about the racial profiling of black shoppers? Because it creates controversy and leads to people discussing it.

But earlier you said “The whole point of "What Would You Do" was to show that people don't help each other as much as they would like to believe.” So are we discussing the entire series or this particular episode? See, I’m trying to discuss profiling, you’re trying to downplay the situation and attribute it to bystander effect which is the wrong thing to do.

They could have done it on Hispanics/Latinos. Yet they didn't because it wouldn't garner the same controversy. They could have done it on youth that dress with a working class or "urban" fashion style. Yet they didn't because it wouldn't garner the same controversy.

No, it would not have garnered the same controversy. To openly state it would have garnered the same controversy, if we can even call it controversy, is sheer lunacy as the youth and Hispanics/Latinos have a different experience from African Americans. Similar? You bet. The same? No way.

People would have reacted the same way had the roles been reversed. They would have acted the same if the mistreated individual was young, Hispanic, female, Asian, or looked to poor for the shop.

No, people would not have reacted the same way. If it was a lily white princess, or some goth kid, they wouldn’t have been treated the same way. Not to say goth kids don’t get discriminated against, because they do, but I doubt they would have told them couldn’t afford the items, etc. In addition, how can you say the youth would have been discriminated against? Do you think the guy would have said “Oh I bet she played the youth card”? LMAO!

I have a friend with dual masters degrees from Duke University. He choses to wear bib overalls and Doc Martins every where he goes. You should have seen how they treated him at the Mercedees dealership.

They probably treated him like an idiot because he should have been at the dealership specializing in Lamborghinis or Bentley Motors and not Mercedes. He got what he deserved.

As a teenager I dressed like an extra from a rap video. You should have seen how I was treated in stores. Nobody stood up for me. Nobody said "hey you shouldn't talk to him that way." Nobody told security to stop following me around the mall. It went beyond stores.

You dressed like an extra from a rap video? Think about that for a bit. Where you followed and mistreated because you were a youth or because you identified with a culture/subculture that already has a bad wrap?

The police department did nothing when I got handcuffed and punched repeatedly by a cop. They said there wasn't sufficient proof that the incident occured. Nobody wanted to testify for me because they were afraid it would happen to them.

If you’ve been discriminated against, you should be vocal about it yet you’re downplaying discrimination and false attributing things to bystander effect (which has nothing to do with the problems in profiling.) In addition, if what you’re saying is true, I feel for you as no one, white, black, green, purple, whatever should be handcuffed and beaten by anyone.

Nobody stopped the police from pulling me over because I owned a Cadillac at 23. No one would do anything about the police officers that pulled me over and invariably asked "how can you afford to own a Cadillac."

Owning a “lac” at 23 is such a feat that the police would actually pull you over and ask how you could afford it? (A WARPED form of sarcasm is heavily implied.)

I was pulled over thirteen times in three counties in 24 months and did not recieve one ticket. The Highway Patrol refused to investigate their troopers. The Sheriff in one county refused to investigate despite the fact that one deputy pulled me three times in four weeks without issuing a citation.

I’d have to know more about the situation, but I can say this, just because you were not given a citation doesn’t mean you couldn’t be cited.

So does profiling happen? Yes it does. It happens more to blacks and hispanics than others. It happens to a lot of people for reasons beyond skin color as well. It wasn't covered by ABC because it doesn't create controversy.

Please refer to all previous posts.

This is not true. Try being a white guy driving a cadillac through a black neighbor hood on a regular basis. It didn't matter that I drove through the neighbor hood to get to college. Like I said one deputy pulled me three times in four weeks."You don't look like you belong around here. You looking for some kind of trouble?" That is what he said every time he pulled me over. Because I was a white guy in a nice car in a black neighbor hood I was profiled.

When have white Americans been racially profiled as a group? Yours is an isolated incident, one we can’t even verify because you could be making it up. I don’t think you are so I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt but does your incident constitute racial profiling? We have plenty of incidences of shopping while black, driving while black, etc. This country has a history of doing it and a system to actually do it. When has the same thing been done to whites? I’m not talking isolated incidences, I’m talking an organized/systematic approach to racially profile whites—when has this happened?

i don't think it's so much racial profiling for whites. it's more about how much money we do or don't have, what our cars look like, how loud our music is in our cars, that kinda thing. like i knew a nice older lady in utah, who had had a rough life. she drove an old clunker around that barely stayed together but it was legal and got her from home to the store. the police pulled her over every time they saw her car.. not cause she was a bad person but because they profile people driving old clunky cars.

What I want to know is this....

If stepping is cultural, race based and "in the blood" like they claim, wouldn't that make it impossible for the white girls to be better than the black girls ? And by impossible I mean even on their best day the white girls should come last.

Isn't the result proof that "in the blood culture" is BS

The hippies were profiled in the sixties. That was the beginning. Now all white males are a target and have been for the last 20 years because of political correctness. You know the evil white man is the scourge of the earth. Obama even sent labor workers out to physically beat up peacefully protesting tea partiers. Half of tea partiers are senior citizens. That must have been a tough assignment to beat up senior citizens.
