No, what I think they are saying is that people that complain about others trolling their threads that are guilty of trolling other threads- they are going to treat them like the boy that cried wolf?

Just a view on what they are saying.

That is another issue that could be addresses.

The forum already has MoD's .....and good one at that.

What the hell are mini MoDs?

people who respond to posts by saying "uhh, this topic is about ______ please stop derailing"

is a good example

Okay, thats fair, and we know some hardcore definitions of litter'ers.

Obama is the antichrist
Bush is the antichrist
Obama's birth certificate
Bush planned 9/11

Those are some glaring examples that come to mind when i read your thread.

Then you apparently misread the thread. I'm fine with each of those topics being discussed on ATS.

The issue is not the topics being discussed, it's the manner of discussion where more and more people feel compelled to insult each other in the context of a political discussion... or inject political insults into a discussion on contemporary conspiracies.

This is about insults directed at another member and broad-stroke derailment of topics with no substance such as: "you stupid repugnants are all facists."

Not disagreeing with you re: more discussion about those who control and mess up our lives

The fact remains, though, that these discussions become heated, whether in real life or online

Same with regard to religion

And because discussion of these topics has lead -- in real life -- to homicide and violent physical confrontations, our parents advised us to avoid them

It's therefore not surprising to find people coming to verbal blows in fora, is it ?

It may begin reasonably enough, but with passions, beliefs and opinions in many instances defining a poster's 'identity' as it were (both on and off line) I think we must accept these discussions are going to be faster and more heated than, for example, threads about paleontology

While this has been said by other members, it actually clears up a lot of my confusion when it comes from you, since i can see that this is what YOU intended the thread to mean.

I do see your point now. Thank you for dumbing it down. You see, i became most confused because when i think of "political troll" it encompasses more than just "hey, you fascist communist socialist idiot republican/demoncrat"

But now i can see YOUR definition, then im able to absorb it in a way that *I* can understand and i can move forward.

True....

I've seen threads that right from the very opening post are TROLL threads from the thread writer. Then they would accuse people who call them on it as being TROLLS! Thank God they usually die quickly but I haven't seen too many of them that get the attention they deserved.

Hey skipper,

I can understand you frustration!!

I think this part from your OP deserves a post of it's own..

For the majority of our members who care and see these fools in threads, don't respond to their low-brow partisan tactics... in fact, don't respond at all... kill them with silence.

Most effective weapon!!

Oh..and Overlord, watch the blood pressure!! Your (obvious) anger may be good, it ain't healthy....

Peace

I agree with the post by Lee Anoma above. I think his comments are right on the mark. There are posts that expouse such, in my view such crazy ideas, like the birther comments, we never landed on the moon, the U.S. is (or has) gone to hell because of our anti-freedom government, and on and on. There are veiled and some times not so subtle rants that are unmistaken bigotry, the last one is despicable. Last is I teach, part time history and science to college freshman. Kids coming in to my class often have NO awareness of any of the most basic concepts in this area.

With the internet these days one can get such huge amounts of information. Our lack of knowledge is a not just dangerous in an economic sense, but affects the national security of our country. Last I am guilty of my own sins. Any one who has seen my posts knows I can't spell worth a damn. When I get tired, my grammer can be quite poor. So, I can be guilty of some of the things that upset me about others. Thats just my basic egotistical flaw. I consider it an insult to the ATS community when I make mistakes like that, so I try not to.

Very much agreed!

Think about it though, do you think that with our discussions here, we could or SHOULD see the derailment or the beginning of the problems in real life?

I can see when my family begins to become testy when talking about the political.

My family has become MORE political. It reminds me of what came from the health care debate today.

Obama became very defensive during it. I saw him getting to the point of some of my virulent dem backing retired uncles and aunts. They (my relatives) know that we are in trouble in regards to the SS and Medicare.

I see we need to discuss this and TRY to be civil while doing it.

I have to admit that I was one of the trolls when I started here.

I tried to get people riled.

Now, I try not to rile people but I can get riled myself still!

Oh yeah. I still have my buttons pushed!

It is amazingly difficult to maintain a discussion with people who insist on being personally confrontational.

It is also asking quite a lot from moderators to cut the dfference between not liking someone and disliking their views when they are discussing something with a troll. It is very easy to blame the person you don't like when you AGREE with the topic or the tone of the troll.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

When you wander in and find someone smacking someone - are you sure that the smacker is the attacker and not a victim setting down a cross boundary?

Being a troll can also include calling people racists or claiming that they want to ruthlessly murder a lot of people. It could also entail any unjustifiable insults such as claiming people to be "out for blood" on a constant basis.

Maybe some of us see something that you don't, it's a personal opinion. It may hurt, but it's still just an opinion, an observation of what some may see in your writing.

They aren't too common but I think they should be included since I've had them used against me quite often.

Might be.

"IT AINT HOW YOU TROLL ITS THE WAY THAT YOU TROLL IT...."

I´ve seen numerous threads recently, where the trolling is done in an eloquent and non-direct manner...the mods ignore and/or simply edit the post.
However the same trolling, if done directly. leads to posts removed, loss of points, warnigs etc....

Doesnt it amount to the same thing.?

As Shakespere once said - "A troll by any other name would still be a troll"

I simply ask for a bit of consisitency in the anti troll police

I recently have had a post removed for the above allegation (hangs head in shame, kneeling to ask forgivness, forgive me father for i have sinned etc etc etc) Yet see posts in the same forum equally bad if not worse, simply worded differently.
Trolling is trolling, be it minor or major league.

I think that with the recent outcry from certain members that the IRS plane attacker is a hero combined with their calls for violent revolution this is a good idea.

It's been sad watching ATS descend to the level of WND.

I agree, but please don't let this effect the right of free speach, its tight enough as it is...i'm sick of people spouting BS they heard on BBC/CNN etc aswell but it seams its fight it or completely cave, sure we're tired but if we lose hope now we might aswell just start nuking ourselves right now cause there's no future in the world that's coming for us and if we do not change this I honestly believe we are screwed.

I also honestly believe the media has brainwashed us to the point we don't even realise how its happening anymore, even to the people who have noticed the lies, its like a massive triple bluff and its quite blatently working don't you think?

don't give in now...

Many people confuse "You're wrong" and misinterpret it as if the person saying it is saying "I'm right."

Think about that for a bit but I'm off to bed.

I see the zombies on both sides will no longer be tolerated here, good about time I have been here for 4 years now and have seen the clowns on both sides try and drag the site into the ideological abyss we call American politics. There is no difference between the two parties and all the trolling and name calling are all part of the show.I hoped that having a separate forum for politics would bring the nonsense to a minimum, clearly that has not been the case.
