These huge breakers would put the fear of God into most surfers. But when you're a dolphin, they can only mean one thing: Playtime.
Gliding effortlessly through the ocean these masters of the ocean made light work of waves up to 25 feet high.
In pods of up to 400, the creatures crowded into the swell of the water as it broke. And with seemingly little effort they tore through the surf,
leaping high in the air as they went.
Beautiful pictures. Whenever I have seen dolphins out in the ocean they always amaze me with the way they can ride on the waves. I actually prefer
seeing them in the wild than the trained ones in parks.
Beautiful and stunning. Thank you for posting. The brightspot of my day and a fresh air escape from world problems. Treasues like these beautiful
dolphins are just one more reason we are fighting so hard to get our world back into balance.
It's stuff like this that brightens my day a bit. With all the doom and gloom around here it is always pleasant to get a break without leaving the
room.
do you guys remember the first time you saw waterworld and when kevin costner was trapped in that cage underwater, and he got out, and started
swimming super fast like a dolphin? yeah, i lost my mind. i wished so badly i could swim as strong and fast a dolphin.
Closest encounter I've had with a dolphin was at Dreamworld. There was a dolphin show and afterwards, one of the dolphins swam to a small area where
there were no walls preventing it from coming close into contact with humans. It sat there for a good 5 minutes smiling and showing it's happy face.
A few people went to touch it and it kept smiling. I was about to pat it gently on its shiny head when one of the staff members came and told us to
stand back for our own protection.
I've seen the Southern Resident Orca pods jump into large freighter wakes and start playing. They'll get HUGE speed bursts upto about 50 km/h and
they'll breach and stuff. Very cool.
I've also had dolphins surfing with me once on the West Coast Baja Peninsula. Also very cool.
I think they do it for fun. They are highly intelligent and have a definite social dynamic so I'm sure part of that dynamic is having fun.
I had this idea once that we were all here doing some sorta of surfing, whether it was water, the web, or financial waves, everything, in some way is
related to surfing. Funny
They bring up a good point in The Cove about the health concerns about eating dolphin meat as their bodies contain a large amount of toxins as they
are one of the few near the top of the food chain and absorb it through the prey they eat.
I got to have a personal experience with LUNA similar to this one while loading Hemlock onto a barge. Luna liked our little dozer boats that we used
to push the buddles up to the barge. When we had a break in loading he would come over and stick his head out and I would talk to him and I could
tell he was trying to listen because he would tilt his head side to side trying to figure out the sound. Sometimes when he was behind me I would
floor my dozer and then turn sharply and he would chase me. You could here him squeal and he loved that game. Our dozers have a cage surrounding the
propeller so he couldn't get hurt by them. In fact he loved to scratch his belly on the keel. You'd be idle there waiting and then BOOM you heel
over a bit and look in the water and you can see his white belly.
I met Luna about 4 times and everyone was I would say almost emotional as you realize there is soo much intelligence there. The only thing not
allowing to communicate is a common dialogue. Maybe technology will help with this someday. They are amazing animals and we should be protecting all
marine mammals. We've already done too much damage now we have to let it heal.
Seeing them playing like this is a great way to show that we share something in common. Body surfing. I could do it for hours it's soo much fun.
Dolphins are one of the most intelligent sea animals and friendly towards humans.
The pictures give us an opportunity not only to appreciate their natural beauty in nature, but a reflection about their survival.
The dolphins are being threatened by brainless (people) murderers who hunt them for restaurant delicacies. Elsewhere, some are being trapped in
fishing nets left by ignorant fishermen.
Sad ending for Luna, but that whale showed us how clever they are. There's no explanation for Luna wanting to play...short of acknowledging her being
a scentient being. And no scentient being should be killed imo.
Luna got killed by a boat, that's what happens when you mess with humans. Fjord where people fish is no place for orcas. There were plans for
"rescuing" but Luna got killed in very short time, he was too gentle and fearless to survive.
I see some amazing Dolphins when I take my Seadoo out 7 or more miles in the gulf. They really like to play with us. The ones closer to shore are much
more fearfull.
