I have always lived on the east coast (except for Katrina time in LA), and in NJ, if there are quakes, we'd never notice---so forgive my ignorance--but are upwards of 15 aftershocks a normal event? What defines an aftershock as opposed to just a smaller quake? Do those in these prone areas get nervous with so many aftershocks so quickly? I am not asking for scientific info, rather than to understand how those living through these feel. If that makes any sense...

I live in New Zealand (big quake zone) and monitor worldwide quakes regularly. IMHO the 6.5 earlier seems to have triggered an unusually large number of after shocks or they are, alternatively, quakes in their own right. I think, due to the closeness / grouping of the majority of the "offshore N.Cali" events that it's still down to aftershocks.. only time will tell, unfortunately. After the 5.8 on 31 Dec 2009 on the Mexico/Cali border there were a dozen or so aftershocks...

I really dom't believe they are distinguishable until they get up past
3.0 at least.
That's when the difference starts between the rollers and solid jolts.
I think I prefer the rollers. Solid jolts tend to knock the hell out of
everything. The rollers just loosen and shake everything.
they all make me nervous though.

Oh come on. I'm sorry but it's got absolutley nothing to do with it! Earthquakes will happen regardless. 2012 is nonsense. Yes there will be eq's in 2012. Just.Like.Every.Other.Year.On.Record. (and before they started making records) I'm sorry but to try and say the 2 are connected is ridiculous.

Well said. Any chance to get 2012 (which didn't even make a half decent movie!) on a thread - so annoying.

I know. It's supposed to be a discussion on the one particular EQ in CA, but derail it talking about 2012 and it seems to lose credibility if you ask me. 2012 is the trashy soap of the conspiracy forums

I'd blame HAARP before that 2012 crap

I am terrified for those living in the Solomon islands. A tsunami is horrific enough, but they are still being battered here. The only news i can find is from 4 days ago, anyone have any new info on the area, such as maybe evacuating the entire population?

As a native Californian, I'm not too concerned about this because it was offshore and thankfully there was only minimal damage. This happens all the time here (though usually not quite this large) and we are sort of accustomed to it.

What concerns me more is that the other day I was sitting in the bathroom (sorry if that's too much information,) when suddenly I had the overwhelming sense and thought that there would soon be a large quake. Here. I don't live in Northern California. I live in the Bay Area. It was just this overwhelming sense of, "I'm going to experience another huge earthquake again like I did when I was little, and it's going to be really scary."

I lived through the 1989 quake and have no desire to live through another similar, let alone larger, quake. No idea where such a thought and feeling would originate from, but it's ironic that not two days later this happens. Hopefully (and probably) just coincidence.

P.S.

For those asking, yes the aftershocks, and the multitude of minor (2s 3s, and 4s) quakes you keep seeing pop up are completely normal. The smaller ones happen every day here round the clock!

You know this with out a doubt? The fact that a date has received so much attention cannot corralate to an increace in activity?

Huh.. Earthquakes in California? Say it isn't so!

I remember after moving from San Francisco to northern PA for a spell, the coal trucks on the road would immediately make me jump up, as they felt just like earthquakes. That's how used to them I was. It took several months to get used to those trucks and not freak out about earthquakes.

6.5 is a fairly stout one, but I've been through 6.5s before.. they are not THAT uncommon, and certainly don't herald the end of the world, nor the state of California floating off into the sunset. Holy cripes.. can there be any earthquake that doesn't have people predicting gloom death and doom?
