I was talking to my son, who lives in the area, on the phone. All of a sudden he shouts, "Holy sh**!! I think we're having an earthquake!" It
turned out that he was standing on a cement dock on the bay at Eureka, and he said it made him stagger.
He could see a couple of kayakers on the bay, but they didn't seem to notice it. He said that seconds before it hit, all the birds on the water flew
off. I asked him if poles and wires were swaying and he said yes. I thought it might have been a close 5pointer.
He had to go to a meeting, so we said goodbye. But when I found out the magnitude, I called him back and had to leave a message. He returned the call
after his meeting, but he was not home yet (8 miles north on the bay). I told him to call me when he got home.
He just called from home. His tv is fine (I knew he was fine, but I was concerned about the tv!), but he said the power was out in various areas of
all the towns around the area, and he was getting flashlights from his car. Six blocks away, the power was on, but not at his block. Don't know how
long before power is restored, but he will keep warm wearing extra clothing. I think he has gas for cooking.
There are other people living at the house, and some had started to return home already, so he had to check with them to see if any had damages in
their rooms, plus check the old house for damage, but he said it was probably ok.
