Oh, yes, you are correct! It is utterly ludicrous, just like the removal of the science classes. BUT in reality, they are not removing the classes, just optional labs. And yes, it is kind of fun!

I used to live across the Bay from Berkeley. My favorite "Berkeley-ism" is the one where firemen were forced to remove the American flag from their fire engine before driving in a parade there. The "reasoning" was that it would keep the anti-war people from attacking the fire engine.

Oxymoron alert! Anti-war people attacking anything????

And so you see what Berkeley is all about. And it is dominated by liberals ...

And remember, this is just up the road from the people that tried to make "ebonics" a recognized language in the schools, just like Spanish and French.

I don't see how you got that I want to dumb down cirriculum out of that. I think we may as well be teaching kids it's good to be illiterate the way our education system currently operates. The school systems wouldn't be "required" to do anything because there'd be competition between them.

This is a "perfect world" system however. Because in a perfect world schools would vie for parent's money by being more well suited to educate, being more profesional, being BETTER. I'm not sure that's what would happen though.

It works in theory.

This is pretty much their only option to level the playing field. This isn't as simple as blacks and latinos getting bad grades. It all stems from social status, economic status and moral standards.

So the alternative would be to bring the blacks and latinos up to the level of the whites economically and that would take years and billions maybe trillions.

While I do disagree with the removing of the classes I'm not sure what other options they had based on their goals.

Maybe the real issue is that how you live is somewhat base on who and what you know.

Maybe their should be base standard for living. (ex. roof, food) And as you become more socially viable more toys. (ex. car, cpu) And I'm a firm believer in population control. Kids should only be had when their standard of life will be acceptable.

Otherwise you get threads like these.

Seems to me that all "Liberal Haters" only want White Males to vote, have jobs and go to school and learn what they think should be learned. Before the Bill of Rights, not even white women could vote or have a voice in government. Jim Crow allowed for any white who felt slighted to get away with murder by lynching (a black person who accidentally walked in a white person's shadow could be lynched - how's that for dumb down!). So I guess you feel those laws worked best for you? Berkley was about tearing those social injustice laws down and if you were in favor of those laws then that makes you a White Male Communist American who feels the only person that has rights is a White Male in this country. And if everyone is a White Male in this country, isn't that the very essence of Communism?

Minus a few posts all of the responses on this thread are from a group of people that don't think critically. Hell, i read the source and the responses for that article on that site and they are just as ignorant as most of the posts on this thread.

Just the LAB is being dropped not the class. And the lab is being dropped to divert those resources to the minorities that are lagging behind. When i was in high school i didn't have a lab, just a science class.

So excuse me while i give Berkley some dap for actually addressing an issue rather than doing what white Americans tend to do and think it's all good because kid because their kid doing well and isn't affected by this issue.

some people should drop out or go to vocational school and get a trade. something for everyone but not everyone for the same thing.

and again it is a liberal idea to lower the standard and give people who don't want to work for it a better chance.

They could have said they thought the money could be used better elsewhere and left it at that and there would be no problem. The fact they turned this into a racial thing is where the idiocy comes in.

If someone were to eliminate a basketball program because it was "too black" you would jump all over them and rightfully so.

I'm a school teacher in the US. I work in a school that is considered high poverty. We have approximately 45% white students, 40% black, 10% Hispanic, and the rest are bi-racial.

I have a somewhat different perspective. You want to really fix education in America? Then cough up the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!

I have a master's degree, have worked at my job for over ten years, and on my salary I barely miss the qualification for food stamps. My school is so strapped for cash that we no longer have soap in the students' bathrooms! And every year I spend at least $500 of my own money buying basic supplies for my students....paper, pencils, crayons, notebooks.

Our schools are underfunded, and I can't even say that enough. Added to that burden, in these tough economic times of budget cuts, education does get slashed. I know in the state of NC last year, the governor actually withheld the equivalent of 10 hours worth of pay from our paychecks to help with the fiscal crisis. Right now we are facing even more budget cuts.

When this happens, you look at your programs and try to cut where it will hurt the least. Perhaps this school is facing something similar, and decided since the labs seemed to benefit mostly 'white' students, they should cut there. Not saying I agree with this, mind; in fact, I think its a horrible idea myself.

I'm a teacher because I choose to be. I left a high-paying job in the medical industry to become a teacher and fulfill a lifelong dream. I do enjoy my job and working with children. But I can assure you, the highly success-driven folks who we need as teachers won't consider the position because teachers make very little money.

Okay, gotta breathe. Sorry for ranting and raving, but (as you can see) this is a subject that is near and dear to my heart.

No i wouldn't. I'd disagree but i wouldn't jump on them, why? Simple. Because some facets have been deemed "too black" and towns and municipalities have sot out to ban them. Like the NFL wanted to institute a policy to get rid of long hair (all of those white guys with there hair hanging over their jersey, the travesty!) or that city or town (i forgot which) that banned sagging jeans. So yea, i know it's like to have a part of my culture targeted because it isn't considered "American" by the majority.

Racism is racism. And once again, what's the problem with Berkley helping their failing students, who are minorities, by cutting a LAB, that seems to be benefiting one group? Folks in America are hot about affirmative action and that it gives benefits to a group of people, minorities. So we have a science LAB that seems to benefit only one group of people and folks are pissed cuz it's getting cut...talk about hypocrites because it's the same thing.
