"The proposal to put the science-lab cuts on the table was approved recently by Berkeley High's School Governance Council, a body of teachers, parents, and students who oversee a plan to change the structure of the high school to address Berkeley's dismal racial achievement gap, where white students are doing far better than the state average while black and Latino students are doing worse."

op's source

Did you not read the article? This is a mindset that has been pushed onto people who're succeeding more than others to feel guilty for it. Don't be proud that you succeed, no, because somebody out there isn't doing as well, and you need to feel bad because of that.

Again .. That Mindset has Nothing to do With the Left or Liberals ..

That mindset has EVERYTHING to do with a very selective group of people who feel guilty about the what U.S has done to minorities in the past .. they are idiots .. and to me they are not associated with any Left / Liberal Mindset ..

I hate to break I to you guys but they're not dropping science from the curriculum. They are dropping the labs that take place in the morning and afternoon that are Not MANDATORY.

abclocal.go.com.../education&id=7200914

not saying I agree with the article but the OP seems to phrase it like the science program is being dropped, which it clearly is not. When I was in school I had professors drop there after class sessions becuase nobody went to them. This happens all the time

This is the problem with liberal political correctness. They seek to make every one equally unqualified, instead of allowing the "cream to rise to the top" It's not a race issue,it's just a neat way to sell the dumbing down of the populace to the people.

I mourn for the country that once was. Where merit was regarded and cherished.

HAHAHAHAHHAHAHA, Since when was education ever the "jewel in the crown"? lol.

Evidently it was many years before you were born!!! In the first half of the twentith century a High School education was a considerable achievement. People could actually do multiplication, division ,algebra, read and write on college level. There are far to many children that are"graduated" from High School now that can neither read nor write. That is what our grand society has achieved by lowering the bar.Functional illiterates are the norm, because of the hobbeling of the best and brightest.

It is past time to have a Political Correctness Rebellion.
Give a mighty heave-ho and get rid of it.
No more "mentally challenged"; call it what it is - mentally retarded.
No more "physically challenged; call it what it is - crippled.

Why don't they just face of to the fact that most of these minority students just are not "wired" for the academic process?
Find out where their talents are and educate them in that area.

As to the students who will not have lab classes any more; it is no easy matter for their parents to just move or enter them into another school.

I'm not saying this is the right move, but isn't that the American way? Why not let them fail if they're so determined?

Because they are not attempting to let the ones who don't care fail.

They are attempting to hobble the ones who want to do well.

If your kid can't run as fast as the other kids, then just take a hammer to the other kids kneecaps.

Great way to think. Make things fair by crippling everyones education.

I'm getting a headache.

Has anyone here ever read "Harrison Bergeron"? It's about a society where this type of thinking has gotten completely out of control(we're on the way)..

Great find nasdack! I never heard of this story before.

Litsum.com

"Harrison Bergeron" is a short story set in the year 2081. It takes place in the United States of America, in the living room of George and Hazel Bergeron. This is a time when the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments to the Constitution have made equality the law. This means that all people are seen as equal in every way, in intelligence, in beauty, in athleticism, and in talent.

People who seem to be above average in any area are given handicaps by the United States Handicapper General. These handicaps are forms of physical handicaps that are placed upon the individuals in order to bring them down to an average level. For example, a strong man may be given a forty-seven pound bag of birdshot to wear around his neck. Those who have above average intelligence are given little radio transmitters that make obnoxious noises inside their heads every twenty seconds. These transmitters are designed to prevent anyone from thinking about any one thing or idea for more than twenty seconds at a time.

Oh, yeah, that's the Berkeley mentality all right.

I actually think this is great!!!!

The Pendulumn always swings back the other way once it is really way too far over the line...

This is so stupid.... a reversal of political thought will surely begin to grow heavy in the opposite direction and perhaps for a time we will enjoy a "middle ground" always good times...

This is so far out there no one can fail to notice how stupid the PC agenda has become...

What is especially sad is that Berkeley high is just down the road from one of the World's premier research universities.

And what do you wanna bet that no kid who has not had any science classes will not even be considered for that school? Also, I heard that this high school was also considering requireing the girls to all have a child out of wedlock, because they want to remove the stigma of those who murdered their unborn babies.
I'm glad I am not subject to these tyrants anymore.

You know if i was black this would piss me off so much. Why in the hell does it seem like the only people telling black people they can't do anything because of the color of their skin is black people and white people claiming that blacks are still oppressed? I mean crap, if i was black and had to constantly hear from black people and white people that i can't make something of myself because of my skin color and that big scary whitemen are using science to turn me into a white person. good god i would probably go insane.

Also, here is a Black Scientist who is not only an AMAZING scientist but also blacker than africa at night.

and here in aus the last government slashed funding for university's and schools (except of course the private which actually get funding from the government even tho they charge bollivier's national dept a term to go there) over 12 years so now they run on the smell of on oily rag! But I really think some of the worst causes are things like texting etc, I've meet kids who have argued with me about the spelling of words, trying to say that txt is the correct way to spell text etc! And now there is even novals spelt in it! WTH!

I agree 100%

I want to add that maybe socialization is not the correct word, to say it in more words; I think a family should be alloted a certain amount of money (either through a tax credit or a grant) to send their kids to school at whatever school they feel appropriate. Attach the same amount of money to the kid as you would if the school system was paying for it and let the family decide. It's a terrible idea to have these draconian school districts you can't get away from unless your street address is far enough away.

you might have a misunderstanding of what liberal means - it stresses self over others, what's good for one group is more important than what's actually more important for everyone as a whole. conservatives stress the standard or others over self, whats good for all is good for the individual. so this is clearly a liberal idea that is trying to ruin it for those that are good at what they do ergo a sacrifice for the weak (the weak will remain loyal as long as you feed them).

Yet another reason added to list of reasons why everyone I know in or from San Fran. went to a very costly, yet academically rigorous private school. The public school system is pathetic.

Where exactly did you get that completely ludicrous piece of info from? Is there a source for that or are you just typing things for the fun of it?

So, in a city like LA, where you have really bad neighborhoods, right next to Beverly Hills, all the kids in the slum want to go in Beverly Hills, so all the kids in BH start going to private schools. So you give them vouchers to any school, public or private, and require the private schools to dumb down their curriculum, and to remove all religious teachings. So people begin to flee America so they can have freedom? Or maybe we could just have more control over the teaching in all schools to prevent that kind of idiocy. But then again we have the removal of all religion, all morality, goodness, history, and reason. OR, we could go back to the idea that the government has no rights other than expressly granted in the constitution, including regulation of education. And perhaps freedom of religion once more, not freedom FROM religion. In other words, it is not the governments problem to begin with. Stop looking to the government to live for you; to solve all your problems. That is the mark of an insolvent society. It is the schools problem, it is the problem of those in that neighborhood. Let them suffer the ignoble problems they are creating for themselves. When they see the results, inevitably, they will have the motive to correct their errors. By removing those who recognize the errors, you remove the ones who could force change. Those who would speak out against such idiocy. The smart kids will find ways to cope, ways to get educated that are acceptible to the universities. Have a little faith in them.

Of all of the mind boggling things that they have proposed. We are going to cut classes that a group of students are good at, so that way the entire school is equal. I am surprised that the parents did not go down there and demand answers, as well as, to have the persons who propsed that fired. Too 'White' so we are going to remove it, so the other students don't feel left behind.
