From the program. Comes in 7 / 30 / 90 / 365 / and custom versions.

I don't really have the time to do a web based one just at present.

Seeing as I mentioned it a few pages back, I did a "complete" daily global earthquake snapshot for the 27th October, MANUALLY

It took me a whole day (spread out over 2 days, I had 2 lunches, one dinner, one breakfast and 2 pots of coffee, and slept for 7 hours, oh and did some office work too)

A lot of time was spent finding new sources, I tried not to use USGS at all, rather using the local state networks where relevant, except right at the end there were on 2 quakes they were the original source.

Heres the interactive map

Heres the kml file for Google Earth

the magnitude colours are same as my NZ and 7+ blogs key here

I found some new sources ; Serbia, Azerbaijan, Finland, Korea, and a 2nd (better) source for Turkey
list of abbreviations used and links to site

I spent a bit of time converting from local time to UTC as well in some cases (Chile, Indonesia, Taiwan are all local time)
Unfortunately I got to Iceland too late and only got half the day and Chile was a close run thing as well as they both only show 48hrs
Perhaps PuterMan might know better link pages for those to be able to see further back?

China ? .................forgetaboutit

In case anyone is interested heres the Excel File for it, 365 quakes/24 hours.
BTW they are all in ML except a few that are mb and those are marked on the Excel File, I forgot to mark them in the kml.

Honestly I expected more, must have been a quiet day, for example Italy had a few the day before, but none on the 27th

If you think Yellowstone or Baja California has earthquake swarms - just get a load of this one!!!

Sw arm in West Bohemia

Since 6th till 30th October 2008 more than 20 000 (!!) events occurred at the southerm edge of the Nový Kostel area. The hypocenters lie in the depth range 10.5 to 9 km (below the microswarm of February 2007) and have reactivated the southerm patch of the 2000 swarm. Several M>3.5 events have occurred making this swarm the strongest one since the M=4.6 swarm of 1985/86.
The swarm is exceptional by the unusually fast release of energy (>10 000 events in 7 days). Due to this evolution the activity is expected to continue in next days/weeks with possible interrupts.

Speaking of intense, that quake you posted looks bigger than 5.8 from here in NZ.
Looks like a 6
Clearest and largest reading off the Live Internet Seismic Server
South Pole, Scott Base and Chile no where near as a strong reading

In fact GEOFON had 5.1 when I first looked 5 hrs ago, since upgraded to 5.6
geofon.gfz-potsdam.de...

and EMSC had 5.4 when I looked at the same time, now upgraded to 6.4 Mw ( and the source they used was USGS-NEIC)

Magnitude Mw 6.1
Region PACIFIC-ANTARCTIC RIDGE

For Iceland - yes no bother.

hraun.vedur.is...

I would recommend that you DON'T click the last one. That is the whole lot in one list!

If you want them week by week with a pretty map use this

hraun.vedur.is...

[Fyrri vika] Previous week, [Næsta vika] Next Week, [Skjálftalisti] List of quakes on the map

The bottom links give you a very nice map of the quakes in each area. Example below.

I am pretty sure that this catalog will give you what you need for Chile.

Yes I am just about to update the list on the blog with several new ones including the ones I sent you.

Bulgarian quakes anyone?

I am working on an alternative to the useful earthquake listings that you can get to from my signature.

This is very much work in progress at present but if you would like to take a peek you can view the page here

The links down the side are also work in progress but should eventually allow navigation to blocks of links.

I would like to know of any pertinent long running threads on earthquakes and/or volcanoes so I can add them to the list. (Something on the PNW would be good - westcoast(?))

VERY cool page. I have looked it over, but don't have time to get into it right now. (Gotta get the kids make-up done for the halloween party.
) When I have some time in the next couple of days, I'll make a post with a list of all the sources I use for my EQ entertainment!

I'll add that Bulgarian one to my list too

Initially I just put the sites on that had quakes that day, but I might as well keep adding to it.

A Global Snapshot isn't something I'd want to do every day, until it becomes semi-automatic.

Re the Chile one, thats better, its in UTC too, I had the site, but was on the wrong page.

Thanks for the reply. People were getting real jumpy (on our Facebook page) about it and I don't much about if this was a normal thing or not. BTW.. been in Hell..Earth for a while now..got my thumb out..so far no luck getting off this faulty Rock. Guess I'll have to wait for that 'Rapture' thing..heh.

The survival kits I came across at the Albertson's about a week and a half ago. But since then King 5 ran a couple of stories about earthquake readiness and how the coastal areas here aren't at all prepared for Tsunamis. My kids had an earthquake drill on Wednesday. The more bizarre part of that was that my son overheard the teacher saying something about how they weren't supposed to do the earthquake drill for another month to another teacher afterwards (which is what finally made me really question all this)... I don't know, it's just got me a little un-nerved.

I find this curious.
I find this very curious. What are they not telling us?
Where exactly is your kid's school? Why are the not telling us?
They have (suddenly?) started selling earthquake survival kits?
Mm..................................

Of course they don't actually know anything as far as earthquakes go BUT if this is volcano based they could. We cannot accurately predict earthquakes, but volcanoes can be more accurately predicted and of course the side effects of volcanic activity are earthquakes.

Where is that school again?

Puterman, Piper96 said they are in the Pacific Northwest. I did a search for King5 - King5 news is out of Seattle, Washington Here.. And This is the locations of Alberson's in the area.

Many, Many volcanoes among many other things going on in that neck of the woods.

Well, I live an hour north of Seattle and neither of my kids schools had an earthquake drill this past week. They normally have one at least once a year, which I think is perfectly normal. Given where we live, I think it would be stupid NOT to. As for the surival kits...I shop at Fred Meyers and hadn't noticed anything. This doesn't mean they aren't there, just that I didn't see any. Again, I think it would be normal. There has been heightened awareness around here in the past decade and especially the last few years, as more and more studies indicate how far past due we are for a cataclysmic event.

Does the government know something we don't? It wouldn't surprise me, but I certainly don't think the teachers do. I think there has been enough info out there for those of us willing to listen, to understand we are always on the brink of a huge EQ or volcanic eruption. Maybe the recent deep tremors caused some more awareness also, I don't know.

I think a lot of people are in constant denial or wearing their blinders because it's just easier that way. I don't think any of us living here in the PNW would have the right to come back and claim we were kept in the dark in the aftermath of an event here. We have had PLENTY of warning and chose to be here. I mean come on, I can see an active volcano from my home and Rainier if I drive a half hour south....I lived through St. Helens in Eastern Washington so I am aware of the potential.

I monitor the area seismos, monitor USGS for EQ activity and PNSW seismo for volcanic activity, deep tremors, etc. I try to be aware so that I will be able to get my family out quickly at the first sign of real danger, but in all reality the 'big one' will probably hit out of the blue.
