Well you are right there. A 3.1 cannot be a 4.9. I am finding it interesting that the do not seem to be listing anything over 3.6. This is the list in Icelandic.

Iceland has some undetermined quakes around the same time but, as an example, the quake listed by USGS and it's lapdog EMSC as 20:38 approx on the 23rd does not exist as far as Iceland is concerned and is listed as a 2.8 some 40 Km away. This may be the source of confusion. If the USGS thinks the earthquake is in a difference place then they will get a different value for the magnitude.

The event listed as a 3 in the English version at 21:58 on the 23rd is the same event as the on listed by USGS as a 4.8, and in the Icelandic lists it is a 2.6!!

Bearing in mind that TA said there was some sort of problem with the global seismo network I am wondering if this is the reason for the discrepancies? I am not sure where USGS gets it's information, but certainly not from BORG

The start of the phase data for the 21:58 is thgus:

KEST eP 22:05:47.10 1.0 34.3 127 KEST

Now SUMG I know is on Greenland, my point being that the first listed station is NOT BORG on the island but further away therefore I consider the remaining data even less accurate.

In my humble opinion the USGS have got these figures wrong, and the EMSC has just copied them.

Yellowstone just took a small hit. Looks around 2.5 to 3. Waiting for update here:

www.seis.utah.edu...

I am seeing this in GEE, so that's a guess.

update: here's the culprit, 4.6 south of the park in Wyoming:
earthquake.usgs.gov...

PM, I think the problem between the different mag reporting on those Iceland quakes may be network difficulties as well. Some networks are starting to come back online, but all of IU is still down. That's why I have always loved the EarthScope TA network. Not only does it match my initials, but the darn things just seem to always work!

BORG will be listed in phase data, and was for the Iceland quakes until the problems started with the II network. It is back up now though.

I think in this case it might be the other way round, USGS following EMSC.
The USGS page lists EMSC as "additional information"
and when you got to the EMSC page for this quake their "scientific data" page with the phase data shows most of the stations they used were GFZ (GEOFON)

Still doesn't explain the difference to the Icelandic data though

Now that is a bit odd since EMSC was listing USGS as a source. I haven't looked to see if they still are.

@TA, yes I mentioned that I thought your reference to a problem could be a cause. I am keeping an eye on it.

Another anomaly, again between USGS and a local network.

Re the 4.7 quake down Puysegeur Trench way last night
4.7 2010/10/24 08:20:26 -47.228 165.541 35.0

Geonet don't show this quake. In fact there was a quake at that exact minute and second but an hour later, but it was just to the north of Farewell Spit at the TOP of the South Island
3394723, -40.00973, 172.88916, 2010/10/24 9:20:26.51, 57km, 3.05ML

then there was a quake near the USGS location, but 3 minutes later or 1hr 3min later than what USGS had.
3394724, -47.51541, 165.22578, 2010/10/24 9:23:40.40, 57km, 3.677ML

Perhaps Geonet got it wrong this time, because the Wanaka seismo, which is located approx. half way between Christchurch and Fiordland, clearly shows there were 2 moderate quakes around that part of the day. The first one the New Brighton Beach one and the second (larger??) one the Puysegur one

I find it unusual that Geonet would miss a 5.0ML (what USGS called it on the phase data page) in their own backyard

I read the Wyoming 4.9 caused a landslide. Suppose we should keep a close eye on Yellowstone.

EMSC also have that quake

Magnitude mb 4.6
Region OFF W. COAST OF S. ISLAND, N.Z.
Date time 2010-10-24 08:20:25.2 UTC
Location 47.26 S ; 165.56 E
Depth 30 km
Distances 406 km SW Dunedin (pop 114,347 ; local time 21:20 2010-10-24)
234 km SW Invercargill (pop 47,287 ; local time 21:20 2010-10-24)
213 km SW Riverton (pop 1,651 ; local time 21:20 2010-10-24)

and list these as the data providers

GeoForschungsZentrum (GEOFON) -- Potsdam, Germany (GFZ)
National Earthquake Information Center, U.S. Geological Survey -- Denver, USA (NEIR)

I wonder if it just has not been issued by GeoNet yet? I can't see that they would miss it if both USGS and EMSC have it, hoever the almost exact 1 hour difference is curious to say the least. There is about 40 km between the two versions.

I am actually wondering how they got anything at all since all the IRIS versions look like this one.

KHZ.NZ.10.HHZ.2010.297

That is a nice big gap in the data then.

I never thought to check if EMSC or GEOFON had listed it this morning, they had nothing on last night 2 hrs after the quake.
Still nothing on Geonet yet, 1hr till noon (end of 24th UTC) so they might update then.
I double checked the Output Description that Geonet put out on the csv files and indeed it is Universal Time. I thought for a minute that there had been a mix up of the one hour added for NZ Daylight Time, ie UTC +13, but no, they all show UTC.
It is a Long Holiday Weekend here, things generally do fall to pieces at GNS during the weekends, let alone a Long one

I take it that your clocks went forwards this weekend then?

Ours don't go back until next weekend. Apparently it is a Bank Holiday here tomorrow (Monday) as well. I had not realised that.

So you have been on UTC+12 and we have been on UTC+1 (11 hours difference) and now you are on UTC+13 and we are on UTC from next weekend. Weird isn't it.

Nah it went into Daylight Saving Time at the end of September. They extended it from 24 to 27 weeks in 2007, runs through to the first Sunday in April now.
It was a head scratcher when I was changing over working the Excel files to create the kml for the quake maps, to convert UTC to NZDT in the a.m. is UTC+13, but in the afternoon its UTC-11 and add 1 to the day coulmn. I do it that way because the csv file downloaded from Geonet has day, hour, minute etc seperated into coulmns.
Its easier when its NZST, just add or subtract 12 from a.m or p.m.

Still nothing off Geonet for that 4.7 , the data is well into the 25th UTC now..
I'll keep an eye out, if I remember, and check later in the week to see if it comes through.

I am just lazy! I run the whole of my program on UTC and then I don't have to think about time zones! Mind you actually STOPPING the computer from converting everything to the current zone (UTC+1 for me) has been a real headache and has been a major element of the delay in issuing the latest version. I have ended up holding all dates as strings so that the computer does not try to do date manipulations on them.

Only a 4.8 but I have been noticing Crete coming up in the listings quite a lot recently. This last quake is right on the plate boundary where North Africa is trying to squash it (if you subscribe to current tectonic plate theory)

USGS has upgraded the indonesian EQ to 7.7..
so far only one afterschock of 5.0....

this might be the couse?

The source of the display was a high-speed solar wind stream, which hit Earth's magnetic field over the weekend, sparking two days of intermittent polar geomagnetic activity. It could turn into three days: High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for more auroras tonight as the solar wind continues to blow.

Thats a biggie
, now 26 quakes above 7.0 for 2010.
7.7Mw seems a bit of a high reading when you look at the other types of magnitude taken for this quake
mb = 6.5 (109) ML = 6.3 ( 3) mblg = 5.2 ( 7) MS = 7.0 ( 15) neic.usgs.gov...
and none of the stations in the phase data are anywhere near 7.7

In comparison Septembers Christchurch's 7.1 Mw was a
mb:= 6.4 ML= 6.3, Ms= 7.3 (according to the same network usgs)

according to EMSC there have been 3 aftershocks to this point in time;
