I often find myself walking slower or crossing the road to try and get ahead but I still feel as if I could be seen as a threat, all I want to do is get out of there quick as I feel the woman feels threatened

That just makes me want to cry.

There used to be a time when a man walking along and seeing a woman walking alone would offer her assistance to her door, and, be thanked for it.

Now he'll get a face full of mace.

I don't know what to suggest - the problem is - anything suggested one day will be used by the rapist not a real man...

Did we prevent something? I will likely never know. But I'm glad I walked up those stairs.

I think it's safe to assume you not only saved her, but saved her life.

Thank goodness for you and your *sense* for others.

Thank you
gracie

Ok ATS'ers, I found this, and was thinking how IMPORTANT it is for everyone to keep this hint - this tennis ball - in their purse or man bags.

Does it work? Anyone know?

[edit on 1-10-2009 by silo13]

This has been tested and proved to be a myth on Mythbusters.

I wouldn't go stocking up on tennis balls or anything.

But thanks for coming up with new ideas!

Take a look at the ATS frontpage. It includes political forums, science forums and many other things outside of conspiracy.

Appreciate the thread. As a father of two daughters, I find every way to help protect them. A lot of the info you provided will come in handy.

I have always taught them to be aware of their surrounding and trust their feelings when they spot something unusual. I even make them go to the bathroom as a team to look out for one another.

Christ almighty...

I wonder how many women I have scared just by "being a man"

How many times have I freaked a girl out by walking behind her at night, or by just sitting in my car minding my own business...?!

It's a sad world we live in.

Yeah - that's the thing of it. If its a woman or girl I know I'll offer to walk them to their car. Even if they say no and tell me they will be ok I'll often just say "Ok" and then stand somewhere where I can see from a distance that they made it ok.

Its a tough thing. I don't ever want to make a woman to be afraid of me - but I don't want anything bad to happen to them either. But sadly the world is full of nuts. So I can't blame a woman for being leery of any guy.

I do think all women should have some kind of self defense training. Reading through the posts I saw someone mention hair and it made me think back through the years to when I was taking kung fu.

There was a girl in class with waist length long hair. All of us guys hated to spar with her. She would use that hair as a weapon. She had learned that if she snapped her head just so she could send all that hair flying into the face of whoever she was fighting. That was no fun because you knew that either a foot, fist, knee, elbow, leg sweep or throw was coming at you right behind all that hair. But, being blinded for a sec by the hair you had no way of knowning what was coming or where it was coming from.

www.skillmotion.com...

I suggest learning about the triangle choke for women, this will save your life.

Some things that might help.

If attacked, do not under any circumstance relent to the person. Bite, claw, kick, punch, key. Do anything you possibly can to inflict as much damage to the attacker as possible.

If you are attacked the key is to put as much hurt and pain on your opponent as possible. Keys can be a great asset to this. Keys are sharp and have a ragged edge to them. I recommend that when you are walking to your car, to have your keys handy, that way if someone does attack you, you can use those keys to deal a well meaning blow to the attacker, it not only hurts, but if done right it leaves a wound that does not close properly. It also leaves DNA residue on the keys and thus gives police more to go on in finding and arresting your attacker.

The key in using keys in a self defense situation is not only slashing put puncturing and twisting. Shove those keys in as far as they will go to the most soft spot on the person you can reach. The eyes are particularly vulnerable to key attacks. But if you are not able to get to the eye the inner arm or inner thigh opens up your attacker to death by bleed out if you are able to puncture the major arteries in those areas. Especially if you twist the keys when you make your puncture.

Thanks for the info Silo. I get more gray hairs every day thinking about my 3 granddaughters growing up in this world we now live in. And that's just with the normal worries. Although I'm sure my 5'2" wife can take care of herself, (I've seen her put down guys a foot taller than she is with one hand and she also has her handgun permit) I still worry about some thug(s) surprising her.

At 49, I can still remember when helping a woman carry her groceries or opening a door for her were the right thing to do. Now, as someone put it, you may get a face full of pepper spray. And I really cannot blame them for it. Better safe than sorry.

Once again, well presented silo and thanks.

Great thread!

Starred and Flagged.

A hard well placed kick to the groin will do ALOT more than most woman think. TRUST ME, as a guy I know, even a soft strike to the gonads is EXTREMELY painful.

Kick, Scream, Scratch, BITE the bastard, bite his nose off if you have to. As the OP said they are looking for an easy target, if you put up a good deal of resistance, and make a scene, most likely he will move on.

Also it's very easy to rip someones ear off. Grab the top lobe, and quickly rip it downward, it doesn't take alot of strength, it's extremly painful from what I've read; this will definitely deter an attacker. Most likely leave him in a fetal position trying to find his ear, and stop the bleeding.

Eye gouging is Also extremely effective. Push your thumb/thumbs into the assailants eyes as HARD as you can. I know for alot of ladies work prevent long nails. But try and at least grow your real thumb nails even just a little, it will make this alot more effective.

I know some of these things sound gruesome and nasty. But you have to do what you have to do. Being raped can scar you for life.

Getting a Concealed Weapon (gun) Carrying permit is the way to go.

I wouldn't advise pepper spray as most rapists are high or drunk, and it usually won't have an effect on them.

If you don't like guns, look into takeing some Self Defense Classes.

If you do, go with Krav Maga. This is the best and most effective close combat self defense fighting stle out there, and you don't need to be big or strong to be effective with it!

To the top!

and ALWAYS, ALWAYS be wary of Dancing Pigs Silo!

It doesnt matter what you wear, hairstyle, where you park, etc...one of the best solutions is simple..bring a friend. boyfriend, girlfriend, etc...a potential boogieman/rapist wont be jumping at you if your friend is there...then you can wear just a belt and band aids for clothes and feel safe in the darkest of back alleys so long as there is more than 1 of you.

Its not about if he can overpower your friend, its about he can only get one of you at a time, the other one is running and dialing their cell phone..there is no greater way to be safe than to have backup.

One last note.

About carrying a weapon and actually trying to use it...

A rapist does not announce his intentions at the end of a alley and then slowly start walking to you...they suprise leap and grab.

Sooo...that gun you were gonna go all dirty harry with will 9 times outta 10 end up in his hands (go figure, they choose targets they know they can overpower easily)...

Get a keychain noisemaker if you feel you must use something...or simply your keys...but consider carefully, everything you bring with you for potential attackers will almost certainly be used against you. This is cold hard facts..all this gun nonsense is the absolutely worst idea stastistically speaking and will turn a rape into a rape and murder. Ignore the counterstrike kids ideas or the rambo for girls teachings...they are brainwashed by lobbiests and ignore facts and statistics.

Bring friends, make noise(scream fire)...do that and you should be alright

I think it's very important for everyone to be educated in self-defense tactics, especially women and teenagers. Whether this means opening up a can on said attacker, or knowing what to do in the event of an attempted kidnapping/rape/robbery, is one thing.

I did want to, unfortunately, point out that the information posted in the OP, could be part of a chain e-mail that was sent out quite sometime ago. As for the interview conducted with rapists in prison, there are some people on BreakTheChain.org that doubt the validity of the study.

www.breakthechain.org...

Despite that, it is careful to consider these facts, and awareness is always the strongest asset in the battle against personal violence.

And to firm up my position, I don't agree nor disagree with the link posted. Just wanted to point it out to those who may be interested. As for the OP, thank you for posting information on a topic that is extremely important, and ignored far too much.

I wouldn't totally edit it. I mean I haven't tried it personally, I just happen to be a Mythbusters junkie and really like their show.

But it doesn't mean they can't be wrong once in a while. If you lived in Northern Cali I'd invite you over and we could try it ourselves (my hubby plays tennis and we have LOADS of balls to spare.)

This is drivel, but don't take my word for it:

This is drivel?

To inform others on how to protect themselves?

To put out some thoughts on how to stay safe?

To shed some light on what rapists might or might not look for?

No, that isn't drivel.

Even this *hoax* as you call it can be used for good, and, as I've already said - the problem with *hoaxes* of this kind? It teaches would be rapists and kidnappers new ways to entrap and lure women.

THAT is the point of the thread.

Now that this is viral (the Crying Baby ploy) we're doing our best to make sure women know about it - so it never does happen - the first time.

peace
