I don't much like being a Novice, but I'd sure love to be a Tinfoil Contributor, to revive an idea from a little ways back in the thread

Actually, I think it would be most accurate if I didn't have any of these titles, since they seem to be designed to reward thread starting. I'm not a thread starter. I've started a handful; a couple of them even had decent topics but I never put the time and effort into making them good threads. Most were on BTS, and I owe most of my flags to a thread about my personal life. I of course think my personal life is of endless interest and very likely the most important topic on these boards, but it's probably not what these rankings are meant to reward in thread starting

edit to suggest a ranking system (heck, why not?):
Tinfoil Contributor = 50 flags
Bronze Contributor = 100 flags
Silver Contributor = 200 flags
Gold Contributor = 300 flags
Cosmic Contributor = 2500 flags

And sometime down the line it would be nice to get a recognition for applause system on the mini-profiles too.

Amen. This new system hasn't even been out, what, an entire day, and people are already b*in like it is permanent and can't be changed. You'd think people would wait at least a day or two before they complain like this.

I think thats what shocked me. To post a reply, as I have steadily for the past five years and then suddenly see the word 'Novice' next to my name felt like somebody was taking the mick. Its very easy to say 'just get on with posting (as I no doubt actually will), especially if you haven't been around to see some of the very major debates I have enjoyed on here down the years. I was a very prolific poster in my earlier years but eventually you get to have made most of the major points you really wanted to and except for the odd new development here and there one tends to be more reactive to other peoples ideas as time goes by.

Of course the branding system won't change my life and I wont be jumping out of a high window (its raining and bloody cold outside!) I would just rather not be called a novice thank you.

Thanks to chissler for his reply, its nice to know this is an evolving idea.

riddle6, isn't it only right and proper that concerns are raised so they can be addressed? How else are the mods to know how members feel? Chissler replied and I am happy with that.

So you'd agree with this as a solution to the problem (using Solid, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum as the new convention)?

Perhaps there should be no outward sign of caste, nobility, preferred status and have it all in the profile where "if anyone cared" it could be displayed with all the pomp and circumstance it deserves for all to see.

And all the posts/threads could live or die on their own merit regardless of who the contributers are.

Yes, 'Solid' is always a good adjective for a Yorkshireman!

its not like I'm crying to be gold or silver, like I said before I don't contribute too frequently tthese days, but a novice I aint.

Look at waynos post and thread count. 218 new threads and 5600 posts with 500 stars? Plus he received applause 87 times? That is NOT a novice, that is an error.

It is not about what they name the categories, it is about assigning people to the right category.

I'm not sure if my reply will get any attention, but I feel the whole labeling and titling makes for an elitist mentality and a potential split of the community. As everyone can well see from my date of registration, that I’ve been a member for a while, and have been lurking on this site for a few years before that. Although I must admit that I don’t contribute much to this site, I really do appreciate everyone that replies and starts new threads. I’ve seen so many changes over the years to this site and I feel that it has transitioned into a model of a hierarchical nature, instead of everyone being on the same equal footing. Maybe it’s just me missing the ATS of old.

I had a question. But I'm satisfied with the answer given.

It's all good.

Remember what mom said?
If you keep playing with it you're going to break it.

Let's not break this one to.

Maybe there should be an "Ecky thump" level reserved for us residents of God's own county?

After all, its only fair

There are two problems, being called a novice is a smidge insulting to longstanding members (like 360 achievements - if the badge doesn't feel like a reward something's wrong). The second as you point out is assigning people correctly. That's why I attempted to put forward a rather simple formulaic solution until SO works out a more appealing algorithm.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Take a quick look around you at some of the "brilliant" contributors of the board. Vallhall is a very good example. She's bronze. Majic: "Solid". MrWupy: "Solid". And these are just a random view names that come to mind. Point is - I've got no problem being in the "solid class" because I know I'm in good company.

That said - I'm sure SO is thinking up some genius plan to keep everyone happy as we speak.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

I much prefer the "Tinfoil" name instead of "Novice". Sort of like a novice conspiracy theorist. However, I am sure it is a little more vague.

I am Novice and I do not mind. Tinfoil is just funnier.

I cannot believe people are complaining yet again.
How much weight do you put on a members posts judging by their stars or flags?
Does it matter any less that a new member has less than an older member or vice versa?
Stop worrying about what is on the damn avatar, and concentrate on the reason why we are all here..CONTENT.
Damn it all, I come here because the breaking news hits ATS days before I read it anywhere else.
I come here because I have friends, I feel at home, I feel a part of something great.
I truly couldn't care less what the frig is on my avatar. It won't buy me darn thing...and as for respect..I'll earn it no points required.
Simple priorities....

It kind of doesn't.

I'm kind of mad.

I kind of think this is wrong.

I'm with you - how typically western to put things into class systems - outdated thinking in my opinion.

The points system for flags and stars is borderline for me but at least you didn't promote a class system as you are now. Hey it's your toy, and you can play with it however you want - but this comes across as a slip into the backward styles of thinking.
