"We'd like to see if people will violate the T&C, and we're going to tell you in advance what we are watching for in particular, and please note that we'll be watching each post"

Do you think that would be an accurate way of seeing how things are going on?

Similarly, most chat violations do not occur when a member of staff is in the chat room do they?

I think you have misunderstood the "experiment" part of the statement.

I find this thread title highly contradicting and hypocritical of the usual behavior of ATS. It's also stereotypical and judgmental.

What is should say is

"Chat is closed to due T&C violations" or something similar.

Anyway, what's done is done. I've never been much for chats but I hope it comes back for those who enjoyed it. It would be nice to take ATS chat to mIRC. You can have your moderators, bans, kicks, warnings, channel locks.

Edit: It does save money.

All these attacks on "idiot stoners" lately, but ATS of all groups of people is just going to allow hemp and it's industrial/economic/agricultural implications to be grouped in with this bunch of idiots? Even though it's basically impossible to actually get stoned on it?

Denying ignorance is a joke.

ATS vs HEMP, right? I read it. I agreed with it. I posted that I agreed with it and when I hit "submit", I was informed it was gone.

I didn't take it personally though and you KNEW it was a 50%-50% chance it wouldn't survive ten minutes.
Don't be all bitter, man.

It occurs to me that instead of limiting our resources, you could just add a few simple indicators and let the technology do much of the moderation when a person isn't around.

I have worked in websites my entire life, and this kind of thing throws up red flags for me. Although it is a relatively underused feature of the site, it is not a good sign for the future.

All this talk lately of drugs and drug related posts boggle me. As i partaker in this vice(cannabis) i see no need to partake of any discussion on this site, imo any site. This is a conspiracy , information sharing site. The best ive found. If to keep the high standard, off mainstream site over 10,000 people enjoy the way it is, is to stay away from Drug talk. I fail to see the problem, its a minisule thing to ask the members, thats my 1.6 cents (canadian conversion)

For Christ's sake....how immature can the staff here be?!

There is an ongoing discussion on banning/allowing drugs on ATS!!

Of course chat is gonna reflect that!!

"But Doc...",you say,"T&C's and sensitivity...."

Listen I've said it once and I'll say it again.

CHAT IS DIFFERENT FROM THE BOARDS!!!!!!!

In a chat room you can't take back or edit what you just said, and sometimes, and I'm guilty of this as well...we just blurt things out.

Gee,what does that sound like? Maybe...I dunno..having a conversation?!

I'm getting really tired of hearing the same old speech about "This is our site, love it or leave it." Well you know what? For people who claim to champion User generated Content, you sure are fond of keeping the providers of said content on a tight leash.

It seems you're also fond of taking our "treats" away when we don't do as you say.

Well so be it then. The decision to close chat over "Stoner Idiots" (Which I'd rather be any day than a Rule Crazy child with a superiority complex),is one of the most immature, selfish acts I've ever seen from the owners of this site.

It may have been you who provided us with the ability to chat on ATS,but it was US,the people who were in there every day,who made up the chat community. And quite frankly,we did a really good job of deciding for ourselves what was offensive and what wasn't.

Yes this is a sad day for all us chat dwellers.. I will admit I may have contributed to this decision with some drug references while i was chatting to a few friends that I know wouldn't get upset knowing I might be eligible for being banned, and apologize to all that have been affected.

But please don't say its for the "kids" and that they shouldn't be seeing this when it has nothing to do with that, there are way more controversial topics than just drug banter that is on this site and after all it is the internet things are going to sneak through and everyone is going to come across things they don't like.

I would also like to add that people get called all kinds of things and are insulted on a daily bases on this site for just expressing their opinions and there seems to be nothing wrong with that and also other illegal things are discussed on this site so they should ban all illegal talk not just the drug part, seems a little fishy to me that it is drugs that are targeted since it is probably a huge factor in the large amount of members that have come here.

The last thing I will mention is that there are many members that talk about how drunk they are and chat and post while under the influence, I understand that Alcohol is legal however the terms also say that you cannot talk about drugs even if they are legal in your country so that doesn't make much sense to me.

I do not come to ATS to talk about drugs I come to express opinion on the conspiracy world but sometimes its exciting to find out you have similar beliefs with other members whether its if you believe in Aliens or like to partake in recreational substances that help you more aware of these topics.

Please people, for the sake of everyone on ATS, keep everything level?

I mean, i'm obviously one of the wackiest people on ATS, but even I know my limits.

Our chat provider is having longer-term issues with the log files and a total review is not going to happen today.

One room of our chat has been returned to service. However, the restriction for entry has been increased from 150 posts to 500 for the time being.

Exactly.

Which is why we say T&C infractions in chat may result in permanent bans without warning... and also, this is not the first time (maybe the sixth) in ATS's history when we've been forced to temporarily close chat because of abuse.

There are plenty of other places for freeform wide-open anything-goes chat... ATS is not one of them.

So you feel that because chat cannot be edited, and that because people may tend to blurt out something offensive that it's fair to make the rules MORE STRICT?

How does that make any sense at all SO? Some of the people who chat in there are teenagers, and yes, they are prone to outbursts at times. So they should be punished for that? Ridiculous.

And as far as Free form discussion goes...

Like I said before,Most of us who make up the chat community know one another fairly well.Enough to know if we'll be potentially offended or not by what that person says.We know each other's quirks and faults for better or worse. We do a pretty good job of keeping it together without people shouting "T&Cs,T&C's!!" in our ears every five minutes.

Someone like Heike, and some other "conservative" users who rant and rave about being offended must've somehow failed to realize that there IS AN IGNORE BUTTON.

Truth is people like that won't use the IGNORE feature because if they ignored everyone who offended them they'd have no one to talk to.

All I'm saying is that the mods (Who are actually more understanding than most) and yourself, need to think about the fact that chat IS FREE FORM DISCUSSION.Whether you like it or not, that's what it is by it's very nature.

Things are gonna be said, sensitivities will get offended, just as if we were all really in the same room. That's the beauty of it.

Diluting it with childish restrictions really cuts back on every aspect of chat, and in my opinon, reduces the overall experience.

One more thing I'd like to add.

Myself and quite a few other members have been asking the mods to see if we can get an Adult chat room,so that those who are offended easily can be seperated from those who are more....open minded, for lack of a better term.

The argument that usually comes is that There is no way to verify age.To me this isn't really an issue. Most of the people under 18 talk about things that make even me blush (and that's pretty hard to do lol).So why not just have two chat rooms,so that no one gets offended, people don't get banned left and right, and every can chat in their own way?

We have ATS members as young as 14. Which means, since actually some of the young'uns are good, productive members with whom one can have an intelligent, interesting discussion, we have members with more than 150 posts who are potentially 14, 15, etc.

How hard is it to realize that and not talk about drugs or sex in front of the "children?"

People have been told this repeatedly and they say "well, if they don't want to hear it, they shouldn't come here." That I don't get! I'm glad to see young people concerned about what's really going on in the world and not just swallowing what the MSM dishes out. Here we have a chance to educate and interact with young people - as well as other adults - in a neutral, non-threatening environment where most people won't label you as crazy if you are curious about aliens, or Bigfoot, or the NWO, Illuminati, etc. ...

and what do some people do? Ruin it for everyone by insisting on talking about the two subjects that we've been asked NOT to talk about, and then rag on and make fun of anyone who has the guts to remind them they shouldn't be talking about that here.

The only conclusion I can arrive at is that some of you adults who should have self-discipline and impulse control are more immature than the "kids."

Most people don't manage to reach adulthood without an understanding that some language and certain topics of discussion are not appropriate in certain places. Things you joke about on a hunting trip are not to be brought up in church, for an extreme example. So why is it so hard to understand that a couple of topics are not appropriate for ATS chat? And if you simply MUST discuss those topics, aren't there hundreds of other chat rooms on the 'net? Or couldn't you get together with your like-minded ATS buddies on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, or Skype?
