There is a wiki-page about the 1980 eruption that goes over activity leading up to the eruption. They are different volcanic formations (stratovolcano vs. caldera) so I'm not sure how the seismic activity may correlate with one another... But according to the page there were larger earthquakes more frequently for a longer period of time. Two months between the first signs of activity and the eruption. It's a good read, but I'm not sure how much the two can have in common.

A volcano just erupted in Russia that hasn't seen any major eruptions for 3,500 years.
www.nationalledger.com...
There's some mention of yellowstone, but nothing that's any different than we've already read.

I'm off to work in a bit, and I'll not be able to post from our control room, but I'll keep an eye on this during the night.

This really is so interesting to watch (and worrying too of course).

Happy New Year to you all, hope you have a good night and that 2009 doesn't really start with a bang!

Blessed Be.

It looks that way to me.....

Here are all the articles popping up about Yellowstone and it's looks like it making headlines all over.

I started a thread just for news links on ATS here.

You are too funny!
Your thoughts on the latest at Y?
I dont think this is over by a long shot

Sometimes, sarcasm is good medicine. :-) But on a more serious note, and to answer your question regarding my thoughts on this... I have a few. I feel as though authorities are much more worried than we might think, and I feel they have been serious about this for quite some time. If there was govt involvement, I don't necessarily think it would be in a "bad" way. It would not be in anyone's best interest for this lid to pop at Y. The elite, the poor, the eskimos in Nunavut, scientists at the south pole.... nobody would benefit. I read in another thread that they talked about dropping a nuke down Old Faithful. Nonsense. If we were going to try to diffuse this puppy, I don't think any expert in the field would just drop nuclear explosives down a geiser and pull the trigger. That's something out of a cartoon for crying out loud.

I think there would be much more precision, and wouldn't rule out the possiblity that it has been attempted or possibly even in progress. Why? These are all "thoughts" and circumstantial.

1.) December 26th (Wikipedia):
# 1997 - The Soufriere Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat explodes, creating a small tsunami offshore.
# 1998 - Iraq announces its intention to fire upon U.S. and British warplanes that patrol the northern and southern no-fly zones.
# 1998 - Severe gales over Ireland, northern England, and southern Scotland cause widespread disruption and widespread power outages in Northern Ireland and southern Scotland.
# 1999 - Severe weather in France kills over 100 people and causes extensive damage to property, trees and the French national power grid (see Lothar).
# 2003 - A magnitude 6.6 earthquake devastates southeast Iranian city of Bam, killing tens of thousands and destroying the citadel of Arg-é Bam.
# 2004 - A 9.0 magnitude earthquake creates a tsunami causing devastation in Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the Maldives and many other areas around the rim of the Indian Ocean, killing 230,000 people.
# 2006 - The 2006 Hengchun earthquake with 7.1 magnitude hit Taiwan.

Nothing like this on the 24th, 25th, 27th....just the 26th. You can add the swarms at Yellowstone to this list.

2.) The movement of Cheyenne. Would this base not give scientists direct access via tunneling, etc., to a point of "detonation"? I do not think it would have to be a nuke if it was strategically placed.

3.) Our president-elect was conveniently in Hawaii, quite a distance from Y. Our current president was 'supposedly' in Texas.

I'm not fearing anything at the moment, to be honest. I don't necessarily think it's "over", but if there ever was an attempt to "Burp the Baby" by way of explosives, I think it either already happened....on the 26th.....

Crazy I know.....but it's a Caldera....if I'm wrong, it won't matter.

Cheers.

Nah, they are just pouring a couple of quarts of 10w40 Castrol down the hole to lubricate....

Well, I guess we could interpret it that magma is moving as that's what the helicorder traces seem to be showing, but if we start thinking about "broken through" we have to wonder through what and to where. Through rocks, sure...the tectonic-style traces showed that rocks were broken, but their significance is almost impossible to determine.

Your question makes a very good point I reckon: trying to interpret what's actually happening is so very difficult. I'm sure that the experts are not in agreement and have several theories as to what might happen. Those theories have been well-elicited in this thread so I won't restate them here; I just hope that this all fizzles out like a damp squib and we'll all have a very peaceful New Year and onwards with no Yellowstone dramas.

It looks the same for three days. They should just put more compression, final FX and clipping to normalize that graph.

I had mentioned that I saw a bunch of those jackets yesterday (or the day before). I too was wondering about that.

Must be a specific group, because I am sure that winter/ski jackets are made by more than one company , yet there are a bunch of folks up there wearing the same jacket

I was looking around the Parks website and came across a url for problems with the cams. It said that the camera in the morning sometime has dark spots which is due to the camera placement being to far away from the window and needs to be moved closer. From that I infer that the camera is inside. I will try and find that link and post it in a future edit.

**edit to add link**
scroll down a bit and you will see what I am referring to.

Thanks I saw that link too. The problem wasn't spots. The picture was clear (of spots) but the camera was shaking. I thought it might be wind (rather than an event) since the steam is going horizontal to one side. FYI I was watching the live streaming camera.

Good morning to all. I just woke up from my nice nap and I'll be damned. I said last night it did not look like it was over just yet and I just read through the pages. Great job guys for keeping up! Very helpful.

Is it just me or is the YellowStone Observatory ignoring us? They have not updated the sight nor the alert. Now if you ask me I believe it should at least be at another level for now. Could it be that they are just not there to update? Or they do not want panic?
