I for one think that Puterman and Robin need to go on CNN and tell them what they know. They are far more knowledgeable when it comes to Yellowstone than this other guy will ever be. If Puterman, Robin, or AnMarie ever says that Yellowstone is going to blow, then I will prepare, but not until then. I have 100% confidence in their opinions from following this thread for the last couple of years. Enough said...

i would also know if she was about to blow .......

its not hard to figure out ..... the larger the swarms and the largers the mags of those swarms along with huge ground deformation as well as HTs....

As far as I know, geodetic measurements of Yellowstone ground deformation from 2006 to June 2010 reveal deceleration of the recent uplift of the Yellowstone caldera. The geodetic techniques I'm talking about include precise leveling, GPS (Global Positioning System), and InSAR (Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar).

It has been revealed that there have been multiple episodes of Yellowstone caldera uplift and subsidence from 1923 to 2003 with average rates of 1–2 cm/yr. In addition, a secondary zone of uplift across the northern caldera rim near Norris Geyser Basin was observed from 1987 to 2003 by GPS and InSAR measurements, with an average rate of 1.0 ± 0.5 cm/yr.

In mid‐2004, GPS data revealed an acceleration of ground uplift across the entire caldera, while subsidence near the northern caldera boundary initiated about two months later.
The GPS and InSAR measurements indicated unexpectedly high uplift rates up to 7 cm/yr through 2006, over three times faster than that of previous caldera inflation episodes. Concurrently, the subsidence rate of −3.5 cm/yr in the northern caldera are more than two times greater than that recorded in 1996–2003.

The maximum total uplift of ∼25 cm was recorded at station WLWY, located on the Sour Creek resurgent dome in the northeast caldera, where the average uplift rate has decreased from ∼7 ± 0.2 cm/yr before 2007 to 5 ± 0.3 cm/yr and 2 ± 0.3 cm/yr in the periods of 2007–2008 and 2008–2009, respectively.
At the Mallard Lake resurgent dome in the southwest caldera, vertical motion at station OFW2 near Old Faithful did decreased from 4.2 ± 0.2 cm/yr to 2.3 ± 0.2 cm/yr in 2008 and 0.5 ± 0.2 cm/yr in 2009.

I know that the University of Utah conducted two GPS surveys in Yellowstone during the summers of 2008 and 2009, reoccupying 15 sites established in earlier surveys near the two resurgent domes where the highest rates of caldera inflation were observed.
Data from these surveys supplemented the permanent GPS stations to increase the spatial sampling of ground deformation. These data reveal up to 2.5 cm of uplift and 0.8 cm of horizontal motion radially outward from the Sour Creek dome in 2008–2009. The caldera uplift was lower to the southwest (∼0.5–0.6 cm), and reversed to subsidence toward the northwest caldera boundary.

I think I posted this before, but In January 2010 the Yellowstone caldera experienced a large earthquake swarm at its northwestern boundary close to the location of the 1985 swarm, and in the following five months the caldera experienced the first overall subsidence since the inception of its uplift in 2004.

B.D.W. The University of Utah and EarthScope PBO (Plate Boundary Observatory) deployed and operated 14 continuous‐recording GPS stations within Yellowstone National Park.

This could be nothing. But. If you check the webicorders around the lake, there is something snapping. I've seen it before so I'm not terribly concerned. It could be the sun on the ice causing expansion and cracks. The ice is not ready to thaw, too early. I'll have to check the weather to see if it's a bright sunny day there. Something to keep an eye on though. Considering there was a quake on a fault which runs up through the lake.

No panic yet.

Edit, I checked and it seems sunny, so blame it on the sun.

Had to edit.
I am not being flippant. That's exactly what I tell myself. I am curious about the activity surrounding Yellowstone. But it's not uncommon. It's that simple and that honest.

I'm an anxious person. I freak first then I have to dial it back. I do this by studying and understanding what I see and hear. Then this understanding dominates and you can relax. If you've never seen or heard of snow before, the first time it falls on your nose, you could be expected to freak out. Keep watching and learning and then you'll know when to freak.

And you can trust me. Because I take everything seriously, and then try my best to put in perspective using facts and rationale.

It's my survival guide to living on this planet of freakish events.

Monthly Update from YVO

YELLOWSTONE VOLCANO OBSERVATORY MONTHLY UPDATE
Tuesday, February 1, 2011 10:07 AM MST (Tuesday, February 1, 2011 17:07 UTC)

YELLOWSTONE VOLCANO (CAVW #1205-01-)
44°25'48" N 110°40'12" W, Summit Elevation 9203 ft (2805 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: NORMAL
Current Aviation Color Code: GREEN

During the month of January 2011, 57 earthquakes were located in the Yellowstone National Park region. The largest was a magnitude 2.4 event on January 25 at 9:51 PM MST, located about 6 miles north northwest of West Yellowstone, MT. No earthquake swarms were noted in January 2011.

Earthquake activity during the report period occurred at relatively low background rates.

Ground Deformation Summary: Careful analysis of the Yellowstone GPS data shows that the period of accelerated Yellowstone caldera uplift, beginning in 2004, has stopped. Some GPS stations exhibit little change and others reflect slight subsidence. A record of recent ground displacement can be found at:

Nothing much to hear really. There is a steady stream of minor bumps and cracks, some sharper than others. A couple of goodly bumps which are obviously small earthquakes (maybe a dozen in all) over the 18 hour period.

It is a big file - 12Mb in the raw version - and Audacity always makes it larger, well I just made it actually and it is about the same 12.5 Mb. Tell me if you want it but it really is not very interesting.
