Wow, i do see that. It does make a circle. The quakes about 60 miles south of Old faithful not too long ago got my attention. Those were a little strong. Definateely keeping an eye on this nw area of the country for sure.

well that is certainly an interesting development.
nice catch,.

About a year ago, someone wrote here that the quakes form a circular pattern in the Western United States. There was some thoughts as to why this pattern existed. I observed the pattern as well, but thought the idea of a vortex was too far out in the ether. Since that time I have seen this pattern on a regular basis. There almost isn't a time you can't see the circular nature to the earthquakes recorded.

So what is it? Or, what is happening? According to the geologists, the eastern arc is where plate tetonics formed the Rocky Mountains. And let's no forget volanic activity.

The ring of quakes are releasing their pressure along over the west. But what concerns me most, is that there is always a gap north of California where you only get periodic earthquakes. It's actually a good thing to see all the activity because it's relieving stress slowly. The gaps are not moving as frequently so therefore stress is increased.

It is interesting to note that there is frequent activity along the northeastern portion of the ring which is mainly due to the volcanic system associated with the "hot spot". Even the "quake sequence" near Jackson falls on this arc. But now there is an odd ball in the middle. The Idaho quake today.

If you look at the globe you will notice that there is an arc in the island chain in Alaska. And that's not the only arc that has been created by vulcanism. Have a look for yourself and you'll see them.

Then look at Canada. Look and you will see that the lakes from Great Bear Lake all the way on a southeasterly direction line up with the Great Lakes. It looks as if it were a chain of calderas. Actually there are two chains. Probably two "hot spots" or one "hot spot" that branches and surfaces in two places. Canada has 7 tenths of the world's fresh water. This is unique. No one knows the exact total of lakes.

3 million, maybe.

I wanted to post this hours ago but I couldn't because of site maintenance ?

Anyway, the arcs... they were more pronounced last week before they took off all the old quakes but I have been seeing these arcs for a while now. Especially from the north pole view. Pardon my sloppy Paint job.

Pesky maintenance. Fancy doing it at that time!!

Those arcs look as if they are the edges of the ring of fire if you make allowance for the odd view point, if you see what I mean.

Don't feel bad about your sloppy painting. I can't even post an image. I can only link. And I ain't going to bother trying.

Puterman is right and your arcs are part of the ring of fire. Here's a link which shows there are many arcs.

engwell.wikispaces.com...

Volcanoes and arcs go hand in hand.

en.wikipedia.org...

There's also many arcs along coastlines away from the ring of fire.
Check out Prince Edward Island and the Gulf of St. Lawerence.

If you like drawing on maps. You can go on this thread and make some maps. And I don't care if you make sloppy maps.

I too will be there. Leaving Friday and will be there for just under 2 weeks!! If you see a shiny white Camaro wave!!!

Robin, i hope your predictions are correct, it will be sweet if she gives me a lil ride while im there. I plan on adventuring out into the backcountry. I particularly want to hike out to where the swarm was back in Feb...anyone give me exact coordinates for that one...hopefully my GPS will work out there lol. Be prepared for an overwhelming gallery of pictures!!! See you when i return, unless i wind up being the guy on the hill saying...."Its Beautiful, I Think Ill Stay" as she blows her top lol.

Austria, I think it must be a system malfunction/problem with the instrument at Norris. All the other instruments are looking ok. Now, if you were to see this on the other seismo's, then we would be looking at an event.

I was just out at Yellow Stone in July. I never felt any temors or anything
. I did notice that a lot of the geysers were dry. I asked a Ranger about this and she said it had to do with the water table. Of course some of the geysers that were dry had a lot of trash thrown in them (some people have no respect!).

I asked another Ranger at Norris Geyser how deep the magma chamber was and he told me anywhere from 3 to 8 miles. Hmmmm, that made me just a little nervous,
knowing I was walking on ground with magma THAT close.

My friends who took me out to Yellow Stone where very surprised at how much it had changed. The geysers not being as active as they where four years ago.

I hope you have a wonderful trip and you get lucky and experience some tremors.

The YNR-seismograph is a very long time "broken". Why he will not be repaired?

Or there is no disturbance, but rising magma?

Could it cause a hydrothermal explosion? (This explains why it is only visible on one seismograph)

Have the Rangers the YNR locked? Or is it still available? Happy about the information a person is on site.

I'm sitting in a hottub in mammoth right now. Life is rough. We are probably very close to some of the activity but of course they were to small to feel. There are massive road construction projects all through the park that have to be affecting some of the seismos. The new visitors center at old faithful just opened and they had a fancy new seismo on display. I will upload a pic later. Snow is a possibility and I'm in a sports car so today will be the last in the park.

I envy you!

Hope you are enjoying the park...thanks for the update. Get the pic if you can, that would be cool!

It has been a couple of years now since I was there last and there was a ton of road construction then, too. It seems to always be in progress. The seismos that are buried shouldn't be affected by it unless they are driving right over top of 'em.

I got on here to look for others postings regarding the park seismos for today. I'm surprised to see that no one has commented yet. There are some strange readings at two different times showing up on more than one seismo. Take a look at the thumbnails: HRE . Especially YMP at 1615 and again at 2115. It shows up on several of them, take a close look.

Look at the times on that Austria. I think that is man made. It shows on the other recorders and looks as if it is interference. That recorder is set at 800 mV so is reasonably sensitive.
