What effect did it have on Yellowstone?

I know you weren't asking me, but so far, absolutely none. The park has been near dead quiet, especially since the quake, cause the stations around Yellowstone I opened right up along with the stations in Japan when I heard about the 7.0 there. So I have been watching ever since.

I should also point out that a quake that large shakes the entire earth, with the possible exception of the "shadow zone," so nearly every seismic station on the planet will pick it up in some form. It's possible it could have had a small long term effect on the park, but highly doubtful. I need to remind myself sometimes about that 7.5 Hebgen Lake quake that struck in 1959 (in Yellowstone), which as strong as it was right there in the park STILL did not cause the volcano to erupt.

Hmm, interesting, out of the blue here we just got a nice little shock, and it appears near the YHH location again. Maybe the big one DID have an effect, I dunno. Probably unrelated. Looks to be an isolated, single hit so far.

I have been a lurker since day 1 but never posted. I was just about to go to bed and thought......aaaa maybe something happened today. I live nearby and am a YS tour guide from May. Thought the 8 was in the park since the signature began immediately. Hope they are ok down there...and stay quiet up here.

I was monitoring the Yellowstone seismos in GEE during the Chile 8.3 and believe it or not, stations at the Lake went into the mm/s. Something I have never seen yet in all the quakes I have seen at Yellowstone, through all the swarms.

This most definitely imo has the potential to knock something loose, with that kind of shaking. But again remember, Hebgen lake 7.5 in 1959, right in the park, and that didn't do it. This won't either. I think.

They are STILL shaking now, as we speak.

Can you post graphs of that? The quake was about an hour ago in Chile.

There were also 3 in the last hour in California, one of which was a 4.1 I think.

Didn't capture that, but they will be seen soon on...hang on- here's an idea of what happened in Yellowstone:

and that's just one station, they are all probably looking like that.

My god. That sure had an effect on yellowstone. I wonder, all these quakes lately, it sure seems like 2012 is becoming more and more real day by day. I think we will be seeing more quakes in the near future unforunately

Trueamerican, or someone else with the knowledge to answer this:

I know that the different waves arrive at different times, hence the wierd, drawm-out wave lengths on the yellowstone graphs. However, in looking at all the graphs around the park, I can't help but wonder why it looks like there is a whole lot more rockin goin on in some areas of the park, vs others? YMC and YPK are both 1600 microvolts though and as you can see, are showing up at differing strengths.

I am just wondering if these prolonged waves are definately from the quake, or could this have triggered something else?

On something as big as an 8.8 yes, that is normal. But now, it appears that Yellowstone did not like this. At ALL. Activity has started back in the park again. Small, but from strange places. I don't like the looks of this. I got all stations up in the park. Watching. Will inform.

No USGS report yet on that one in Argentina, and I also saw a smaller aftershock from that quake. First one was into the mm/s, which usually means big.

could it be that shockwaves through the earth are meeting and crossing just on yellowstone location...??? and amplifing each other?

the responce on the 7 in japan was not so big tought it was much closer...

So I decided to check out the seismos at Helen's since it is in my backyard, and I found this. It is very disturbing:

Man, not exactly sure what to make of that, other than maybe after the 8.8, it appears to have triggered something. looking like low level HT's. But that could be wind saturation, not sure. Shirakawa can probably tell with a frequency analysis.

I'm hoping it's wind. It has been windy in my county all day long (about 80 miles away), so maybe. It sure doesn't really look like wind though, and obviously it wasn't going on all day there.

I'll be keeping an eye on it though!!

As far as Yellowstone....she's still showing those funky waves, while everywhere else I have looked, seems to have already leveled out. ???

It's stronger because Chile also had a 6.9, 6.2 and two 6.0 after that. With a few 5.0's tossed in there.

Great, my dogs were freaking out right before that quake, and now they're doing it again.

I don't think it's over yet!

Looking at GEE, those waves just keep on rollin'!
