Wow, am I still following this thread this far in? lol

Just came across this in my daily perambulations across the intertubes, and thought it may be interesting reading for you. Always...it's good to keep an eye on the bigger picture.

NYT: 2008 saw notable increase in moderate Southern California earthquakes

Anyhoo, keep up the good work. Oh, and Yummy Freelunch (and this thread) inspired my latest comic strip, which I shall now plug shamelessly:

Thank you to this thread and members for inspiring this

Strange to say the least...why would they want to do something as complicated as this right in the middle of 2 million other things going on?

Good Point...in a setup like that I'd 4 sure have WD40 & duct Tape...if it's stuck...if it's loose...pretty shameful though, the guy runnin' it probley knows whazup but anyone else would have to spend a weekend to track down that gaggle

you dont need to be a scientist to see that their stuff is way outdated

when all else fails and you have a limited budget as these guys claim to have

use good old fashined plummers Duck tape to seal any new unwanted vents in the park and world wide...

Maybe LKWY has simply been crushed by the recent activity and that is why we are getting no data.

Now that's a scary thought! It is certainly one that I was considering yesterday as the premise that they are busy using the data themselves does not ring true. It may take a little longer to get to the public domain if they are busy, but I don't believe it would just cease.

According to my contact, data from LKWY is just fine. As I pointed out much earlier in this thread, they have the abilit to direct data where they need it. Right now, they need it more than us.

The sensor is not covered in snow, or crushed. They have their reasons for it not showing up in the public servers. I was also told that it will be put back online for the public soon. Relax...not the end of the world....yet.

Cheers!!!!

We already asked Sage to go clean the cams..
Still looking forward to those jumping jacks and flaming SAGETURKEY!

Remember my post about the auto-wiper system...well got that covered. Im making a modified version of that unit with two upgrades, this one includes an automatic heating resistor to keep the window warm and a second washer fluid tank with a 3 way valve. Which ever one is full, the unit will draw washer fluid from the full tank. Should have that read for them by late next week.

I mentioned about this to my contact up there and they want it!

Cheers!!!!

What do you make of the post that mentions that borehole experiencing pounding shear forces? That doesn't sound good...does it?

Good Idea on the Big 'ol 10 Watt Ceramic Resistor drawing 5 Amps! So what...you gonna use somekind of Op-Amp Discriminator/Float for the Y-Valve?

Aw, spoilsport! How can you have a good conspiracy theory with real facts! Only joking!

I did not think it was crushed, but they ARE preventing the data coming out for reasons best known to themselves............conspiracy!

The casing is somewhat old, but its built to take a good beating. It has also been subject to gradual vibrations for a few years. Not sure why they dont let us see any data from it. Contingencies are always in place with these sensors but as my contact pointed out, its working at this point.

There would have to be shear forces byond a magnitude of 5 or seperation of ground to break it.

Cheers!!!!

Na a small 2 watt ceramic resitor will do the job. It only needs to keep the window slighty above the freezing point.

For the valve and level detection, that will use a set of fluid level strips. These change resistance in relation to fluid level, a full level produced less resistance at the output and more resistance with low level. Tied into a differential op-amp and a couple of TTL chips and your all set. Each would employ a minimum voltage setting (low level) and a high setting (full level) . They will also have an overflow interlock for the rainy days.

I will get into more detail of those level strips when I get back. They are custom made puppies.

Cheers!!!!

Sure...Virtual Potentiometers switching a-b channels on Op-Amp inputs to drive TTL for pump motors from low cell to full cell with both having overflow capabilitys...so what...the Master Cell gonna have some kind of external Fluid Input for Dry Spells? How would ya do it out there...a 5 Gallon Bucket LoL?

It's official! Time to move on.

See you if and when something new happens! Hopefully never!

Thank you all for your very hard work, but I for one am going to assume that whatever happened was isolated until there is reason to think otherwise.

Is it just me or does Alaska & California always have this much activity?
Seems maybe Indo getting it's 2nd wind also? How often does Poland have back to back M4.5?

Interesting!!! This much is obvious, unless the data is being corrupted, the rapidly lowering lake level is obviously not due to outflow going down the river. (Do the math.) If that be true, the lake floor must be changing profile (lowering or tilting) or the big momma sprung a leak downward.

I certainly don't anticipate disaster anytime soon, but the fact remains that Yellowstone is a very interesting phenomemon in the dullest of times, and the last few years have been some of the most interesting in recorded history. Don't forget that we've had record uplift of the caldera in the last few years, and it's generally agreed that this is due to increased magma inflow. Now we've got one of the largest earthquake swarms in recorded history, occuring at a very sensitive area of the park. It's likely that no disaster will result, but I for one plan to keep an eye on it for a long time to come. If a guy has a gun pointed at my head, he has my attention, even if I'm very confident he won't pull the trigger.

Alaska always has plenty of quakes. You can commonly see a couple of hundred on the maps on any given day. It's a very active area there. The same with California, especially in the south. It's not unusual to see 400-plus quakes showing on the maps at any time. (Most very small, of course.)

Indonesia is even more active. Having about two hundred active volcanoes plays a big part in that. (Around half the world's active volcanoes are in Indonesia. But note that when I say "active" I don't mean "erupting". I just mean they're not considered dead or dormant.)

I wouldn't read too much into a small uptick in the numbers of smaller quakes. Any uptick in the number of larger ones is something to watch out for, though. In order of what might constitute "larger": over mag 4 in Cal/PNW, over mag 5 in Alaska (especially on the mainland rather than in the chain of islands), over mag 6 in Indonesia would be a fair guide. They get mag 5's in Indonesia virtually every week...It's unusual if they go more than about ten days without one, in fact.

Edit: I forget to mention Poland, which is just a few hours' drive from where I am. Quakes of mag 4.0 or more are pretty rare there. But we even had a couple here out in the western region near an extinct volcano in our spa region. Part of a small swarm that happens pretty regularly about every eight or ten years. I'll check the Czech media for any extra info and if it's of interest I'll post to it with translation as needed.

Edit again to add: just searched Czech google and nothing yet about quakes in Poland. But it's Sunday... They'll probably mention it later this evening or maybe tomorrow.

Regards,

Mike

Hi there,

just wanted to mention that the gauge doesn't measure the lake level. It's a ways downstream from the lake outlet and it measures the height of the river in the middle, relative to the gauge's fixed position. They use it to compute the volume of flow by some formula. So a drop in the level on the gauge normally corresponds to a drop in the outflow (cu ft/sec) rate, rather than giving us much of a clue as to the level of water in the lake. Well, not directly anyway.

By the way, I appreciated your comment the other day about this all being like sleeping out in the stable while waiting for a foal to arrive. That brings back some memories as I grew up in the country.

Best regards,

Mike

In Texas I used two 1 gallon milk jugs and that was in a dry environment with infrequent rain. In Yellowstone it will be even easier. Plenty of moisture and it wont need to use its washer mode all the time. The mist from the guyser and condensation will help at that point. And like anything mechanical or electricla, requires frequent maitenance. So those tank levels can be checked. Nothing too complex that the average joe cant handle.

Neat thing about it is that the logic board, identical to the one down in Texas, will have the same variable setting adjustments and programable eprom for each season conditions. This will allow the unit to self adjust for those dry days or snow days or freezing days and control the various devices as needed.

This isnt a grade school experiment btw. It is in use by 6 tv stations across Texas and is just one of the few patented devices I have made going back to the late 80's. The logic card in fact is also being used by Broadcast Electronics Inc. in their IOT water cooled transmitters that controls the water flow and temperature sensing..a variant of the base logic card being used on the wiper systems on cameras at those 6 tv stations.

I didnt earn a Electronics/Electrical and Mechancial Engineering degrees to just sit around or to just use to get some lame job. I earn a good royalty from those systems. I intend to donate this particular system to Yellowstone because I am a nice guy and we all deserve a clean video feed.

Cheers!!!!
