Hi all, I have created a new thread to address something that has not been discussed, possible safe areas in the event that something does happen.

Somebody had to.

If bulging were causing the increase in the discharge what would happen to the temperature of the water, anything? Assuming that bulging would reveal new surface area under the water it seems logical that a change in temp would result unless the "new" surface area was at or near the same temp as the "old" surface area.

Just curious

I would have to imagine that the lake is being monitored for sulfuric increases that from what info I have gathered is another sign.

I would assume that at first it would be at the same temp but "if" that same area began to thin out it may allow more heat from beneath to come to the surface..thus heating some of the more frozen areas and increasing the run off ....just a thought what do you think?

Huh? Nothing here says it's hydrothermic... At least that I see. It could be the magma chamber rising beneath the lake. Not good news as far as I see.

It would appear to me if water flow was increasing out of the lake that there could be a possibility the underside is bulging upward, pushing water outward to the southeast end.

CALM DOWN!!!

Lets keep it real and scientific eh....

Look at this link:

USGS Real Time Water Activity etc Yellowstone

As you will see THE WATER OUTFLOW is less than in nov 08

and:

ITS WINTER look at the PRECIPITATION CHART on that link....

THIS IS NOT THE HIGHEST OUTFLOW for years.

There is more water in the lake as its winter, its raining lots and the entire USA has had huge snow and ice storms recently.

YThe outflow is actually very close to the MEDIAN for this time of year and is not STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT to any degree from the median.

Now There could be another factor which WOULD BE OF CONCERN that would add outflow from the lake, that being the fact which I am sure is already mentioned in the thread that the lake has recently been found to have a massive amount of Hydrothermal Vents... if these were adding water to the system, above the norm, that would indicate a increased magma filled chamber or activity, but as the link I provide shows the TEMPRATURE chart does not indicate this.

Rain water.

melting Snow and ice.

Its january.

Normal.

The outflow, Temp and behaviour of the hydrology of the lake at the present is within totally normal ranges and the median for the lake from recording began.

Kind Regards,

Elf.

ps there is a big difference in Science between "Instantaneous" results and actual readings when correctly correlated.

I know we have discussed the movement of LKWY but it's also intresting to note the movement trend of the P709 GPS locator postioned above the lake on Promontory. Note in the article on its installation why it was installed early. (great pics of install)
Artical and pictures of P709 install Promontory

Now note the changes in its movement over the past few days. Quick move to the north and dropping. A dome rising in the lake would pull it North cause it to decrease in elevation.

It's the wild swings re the water that are odd today.

It was 502 around 12:00 PST or 1 MT and then around 4pm it went down to 460s and now it's back at 493 as of 1800 MT

Also - I notice that in this graph the 29th and the craziness earlier today were not the highs but the drops from the highs - matching with the slew of 3.er quakes or harmonics

look at those dives 29th eve and today at noon

I would say that is good possibility, the water outflow should be watched daily

You guys do realize the chance of Yellowstone erupting during your lifetime is almost nil, right?

This topic will go on for years if you keep posting every little geologic change.

I think perhaps gee is answering that Q about the water flow look at how far negative the spikes are going while junping. Perhaps its like a waterbed sloshing back and forth kind of thing. Would go in line with the usgs pdf about the spongy type materials in the caldera

Can somebody do a comparison in time frames / water output against the activity under?

I am calm. This thread has nothing to do with Dick Cheney doing Satan-knows-what at the Bohemian Grove.

The median for water output is visible on the graph. It is from the same website you posted. 79 years, for this time period, from, say Dec. 25th to Jan. 3 is an increase.

Look at it again.

I am not crazy. My cat knows I'm not crazy (although he is crazy). And I am pretty sure non-crazy people can interpret what they see on a graph.

You revealed an error in my logic. I suppose its also logical that no temp change would take place unless the amount of heat from below was substantial enough to negate the cold water/ice and by that time it may be to late to matter.

I dont know maybe if we do see a significant increase in temp with little to no change in water flow then perhaps it would be pertinent.

I agree the lake is in norms.

However historically the flow is decreasing this time of year as most of the water inflow from the drainage area is locked in as frozen precipitation. The temp has been well below freezing at Yellowstone for weeks and not only is the ground snow covered in places not geothermally warmed it should be frozen to a depth approaching 18 inchs.

The only things which could increase lake flow this time of year are:

1: Lake temp increasing (geothermal)
2: Increased run-off in drainage area (again geothermal warmimg)
3: Ground deformation displacing water
4: Increased sewer discarge into lake do to more scientists on site

Actually it wasnt raining its been snowing we where watching it on the old faithful cam most of the day really nice actually. The flows have been going up and down with activity all day so we are simply therorising about wether or not the dome could have moved with the stronger earthquakes we talked about mabe 15 -20 PAGES ago. NOBODY IS FREEKING OUT we are simply learning and discussing things we have learned since page one of the thread.

Yes plucky and please look at the graph posted on the link I provided showing that when NO SEISMIC ACTIVITY was present in Nov 08 in this lake the outflow was higher.

Also as stated please look at the Chart that can be seen on the link I posted again from the USGS showing the precipitation or "rainfall" at the lake/site over the time period that you guys say there is an unusual increase in outflow.

It is obvious that the outlfow is matched closely to the precipitation in the area or the rain falling on the mountains and flowing to the lake.

Like most rivers and lakes ALL OVER THE WORLD NOW they have high outputs varying according to the amount and time to flow to them of the rain in the locality.

nothing to do with volcanoes, earthquakes etc.

Now I am not saying something is not up at Yellowstone, I watch this closely every day, for years before this thread, My request for the Mt Baker thread proves that...

I am quite concerned by the depth, magnatude, geography and amount of the recent seismology in this one area, and I think if you look at the entire history or quakes in Yellowstone against the previous calderas there you can almost see a ring of fire as such with the activity, and this event seems to be closing the circle as such, however:

This water you guys are stating is certainly not the smoking gun here.

Its rainfall period... look at the data.

Kind Regards,

Elf

I dont think it was an error in your logic of the thought. You actually reminded me of the usgs pdf and some of the things in it pertaining to the movements of the different forms of materials beneath yellowstone. I am wondering if perhaps there could be an actual increase in the geothermal activity in the lake or around the park.
