Actually, the Northern European (German?) culture can lay claim to the Christmas tree along with the Yule celebration. It was a sign of life during
the coldest months when all other plant life appeared to die off.
The Christmas as we know it evolved as the cultures evolved. Religion did not create the winter celebration. Societies created it, accepted it, and
adapted it to fit in with what was going on at the time. We now live in a capitalists society and our winter celebration reflects the adaptation to
material things. For all those who want to see Christ back in Christmas... he never was (the winter celebration was viewed as unholy until the people
demanded it otherwise). For each evolution, the people quickly accepted the idea that it was always this way.
All attempts to completely ban the winter celebrations in every culture resulted in the people merely adopting other ways to celebrate it. Thanks to
a few creative artists and writers, we now have Santa Claus, formerly known as St. Nick, aka a host of other names depending on the culture. Thanks
to the German cousin of the English queen, we now have the Christmas tree and people believing that is the way it has always been done.
