Actually, the Northern European (German?) culture can lay claim to the Christmas tree along with the Yule celebration. It was a sign of life during the coldest months when all other plant life appeared to die off.

The Christmas as we know it evolved as the cultures evolved. Religion did not create the winter celebration. Societies created it, accepted it, and adapted it to fit in with what was going on at the time. We now live in a capitalists society and our winter celebration reflects the adaptation to material things. For all those who want to see Christ back in Christmas... he never was (the winter celebration was viewed as unholy until the people demanded it otherwise). For each evolution, the people quickly accepted the idea that it was always this way.

All attempts to completely ban the winter celebrations in every culture resulted in the people merely adopting other ways to celebrate it. Thanks to a few creative artists and writers, we now have Santa Claus, formerly known as St. Nick, aka a host of other names depending on the culture. Thanks to the German cousin of the English queen, we now have the Christmas tree and people believing that is the way it has always been done.

Well said! Star 4 u.

Although I do want to point out, that this is how the christmas tree entered into our version of christmas... however the Germans hijacked the idea from the Druids... which were historically prolific throughout northern Europe for centuries.

Its relatively amazing how quickly people adapt a new tradition, and think that it's always "been that way". Christmas as celebrated as the nativity of jesus has only been with us since the Victorian era... The image of Santa as we all know it was invented as an advertising scheme by the Coca-Cola company in the mid 1920's...

Heck, even the poinsettia is fairly new (Victorian era). The plant is originally native to Mexico.

It could also be argued that modern Christmas, as the world knows it, is entirely an American invention.

Yes, you are on top of things. I am still amazed at the religious sector. Pagan holidays are now Christian holdiays, and for the majority of people, they don't care about the actual origins as long as they have their celebration and believe they won't go to hell for it.
