One of the big CIA drug smuggling operations was Crittenden Air Transport. The CIA supplied Crittenden with seven C1-30s and one Boeing 707, which were supplied by Evergreen from Pinal. The book makes note that this is just north of Tuscon. Now this:

``Give me a fully armed C-130 and a few A-10s and I can topple governments," Eitel told the Post-Intelligencer.

The A-10 ``Warthog`" a highly maneuverable jet, distinguished itself in Operation Desert Storm as a tank killer.

Eitel told the Rose subcommittee that he had heard of the C-130 ``giveaway" in 1991 and wanted in on it. But he said he was told by the Forest Service that there were only three C-130s involved in the agency's ``historic exchange" program.

The program was intended as a means of swapping the old private air tanker fleet, mostly made up of C-119 ``flying boxcars," for C-130s and P-3s that could be converted to tankers. The C-119s were banned after a 1987 crash in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest that killed a crew.

On further inquiry, Eitel says he discovered that there actually 28 aircraft involved in the exchange with the Air Force's Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., also known as the ``bone yard."

The Church committee found that a CIA proprietary called Intermountain Aviation, Inc., was established during the Vietnam War near the Air Force's biggest repository of surplus aircraft, the Davis-Monthan ``bone yard" in Tucson.

As a result of congressional pressure, the CIA sold Intermountain's assets. One of the purchasers was Evergreen International Aviation, Inc., of McMinnville, Ore. Among Evergreen's board members was George A. Doole, now deceased. He was the former CIA officer widely credited with creating the agency's global aviation network that included such proprietaries as Air America and Air Asia.

I'll have to read all your research later, Someone336. For now, I will go to sleep with these thoughts:

1 - The slickest criminals have a charity operation or three going.
2 - Never get on an airline you never heard of! (I'm kidding - some unknown airlines are legit... but it's funny how these airlines I never heard of are alleged CIA ronts)

Evergreen International Airlines is by no means a small company, that nobody has heard of.

Commercial airlines, aircraft leasing companies, and leading government agencies entrust heavy maintenance work to Evergreen Maintenance Center (EMC). Located in Marana, Arizona, the EMC is one of the largest full-service commercial maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities in the United States.

Consisting of three maintenance hangars and a large maintenance flight line, the Evergreen Maintenance Center also operates the Pinal Air Park and its 6,850-foot runway rated for Boeing 747-400 aircraft. With 20 million square feet of ramp and storage area able to accommodate up to 300 aircraft, the EMC also holds the distinction as the largest commercial aircraft storage facility in the world.

THE CLIMATE
Your aircraft will be located at a facility in the dry southwest, the ideal climate for aircraft maintenance and storage. They will also be sheltered from natural threats that are commonly found throughout the USA and the world.

www.evergreenairlines.com...

This is hardly surprising. The aircraft at Marana are seldom being scrapped - most of them are being stored. For example, Evergreen stored a huge amount of SouthWest airlines 737s after 9/11. Billions of dollars worth of aircraft. Their latest contract is to operate Boeing 747 Large Cargo Freighter aircraft, flying parts for the 787 for Boeing, to the USA for assembly; this aircraft was modified by an unrelated compay also called Evergreen. Pinal Evergreen, also created a 747 fire fighter, offered to the government to drop fire retardant in huge amounts, on wild fires.
They also moved the Spruce Goose to their museum in Oregon.

I want to make it clear this company is legit, and not a CIA front- but they still are contracted BY the CIA, likely including shady contracts. Pictures here. You can see the Evergreen 'supertanker', in the background, and other Evergreen aircraft there - they must be doing something. It is likely they are transporting spare airplane parts salvaged at Pinal to Airlines across the world, however. Many aircraft are unmarked when they enter an airline, too, for example, I flew on an ex-Saudi A320 which was purchased or leased, by Jetstar, Australia, it operated like this for a few months until it was painted - same could of happened here. Infact, that is very likely because titles are usually stripped off aircraft while in storage - look at the photos. All Evergreen aircraft have been purchased used, not new.

Other storage and maintainence strips have high security, too.

( Davis-Montham airforce base)

The boneyard itself is off limits to non-military personnel, and even military personnel without a good reason for being there. You can't just walk up and say "I want to walk around and look at the airplanes." But right next to the boneyard is the Pima Air Museum, which has restored many of the aircraft in the boneyard to museum quality and lets you walk around examining them. Pima does a bus tour through AMARC, but you can't just go walking around in there unescorted, and I'm not sure if they even let you off the bus.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Of course, Evergreen is part of the Civil Reserve Air Fleet.

The airlines contractually pledge aircraft to the various segments of Civil Reserve Air Fleet, ready for activation when needed. To provide incentives for civil carriers to commit aircraft to the Civil Reserve Air Fleet program and to assure the United States of adequate airlift reserves, the government makes peacetime airlift business available to civilian airlines that offer aircraft to the Civil Reserve Air Fleet.

en.wikipedia.org...

Evergreen's owner and founder Delford M. Smith "...acknowledged one agreement under which his companies provide occasional jobs and cover to foreign nationals the CIA wants taken out of other countries or brought into the United States. However, neither Smith nor CIA officials would say whether any broader agreement existed."

en.wikipedia.org...

Hardly surprising Marana was gobbled up by Evergreen, considering the above. "Let us use your aircraft ocassionally, and you can have this airfield"...?

Intermountain's main base of operations was Marana Army Air Field near Tucson, Arizona. In 1975 it was bought by Evergreen International Aviation, a company also believed by many to be connected with the CIA. Other CIA "proprietary" airlines such as Air America and Air Asia also operated out of Marana during the Vietnam War years.

en.wikipedia.org...

So - is Evergreen like a privatised version of Intermountain Air? Wouldn't surprise me one bit if they did sensitive activities out of Marana as EverGreen. They have deals with the CIA, they are part of a reserve fleet, then operate out of there own highly secure MRO facility that was previously a CIA airport. It makes complete sense.

There's even an industry rumor that the two a-10s that were lost suposedly in Colorado a few years ago actually ended up in pieces inside a heavy lift 747 out of Marana, on the way to south america for some shady deal.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Marana has a large underground area where they keep various airplanes and helicopters. About 12 years ago I went to Marana to pickup a Lockheed L-1011 to ferry to Cambridge, England. This was the L-1011 that is used to launch the Pegasus. The one night I stayed there I woke up at 3am to hear massive air ops which sounded like it included many helicopters. The next morning all was peaceful and quiet with no hint as to what was causing all that aircraft noise or where all the helicopters might be.

Here's what's bugging me:

Google maps:
Map

Same location ms live:
M ap

Now there obviously must be a valid reason that someone informed google, that that particular area is considered sensitive material, so it was blacked out. Yet on live maps it's just plain old dirt. I am guessing that they did not have time to sufficiently cover-up what ever was there when google did their survey so it had to be censored. The job was finished for the live maps survey.

Question is, whats really there?

With respect.

Well, if you'd bothered to actually look into it a bit you'd know that you were wrong.

On the main drag there are three or four large jets, one of which is facing the middle structure on the Google map, and is absent on the second image.

Further south, a few of the planes are missing, and a few others have been turned around.

A lot has changed between the two maps, you just have to pay a little more attention.

And...
To the north of the runway and plane junkyard, there IS a military installation. I believe this is what is listed publicly as a training facility for the military. There are rows of active black choppers, several buildings in a good condition, and a secure access road.

I agree that there is nothing obviously untoward going on here. It is a regular military base with no sign of anything suspicious.
I just felt obliged to point out that what you have used as evidence is incorrect.

Black helicopters refers to special operations 'black' helicopters - they are always Blackhawks. The helicopters all have the profiles of AH-64 Apaches, which are not black. This matches perfectly to the known training ground for the Army National Guard.

that "round thing" is a farm.

Can you tell us where the entry point is that he used in gaining access to the facility? I would be interested in following the path he took based upon the description of the route he traveled. In fact, if you can ask him to provide the route in as much detail as possible, that would be even better.

Yep, as stated above it definitely looks like water that has been drained in the other pic, looking at the MS Map you can see the shadows of the vegetation on the water.

Yes, several of you have made it clear that I am clueless when it comes to CIA-contracted companies (some of which may or may not be "CIA fronts").

The joke attempt was more for myself. And I didn't mean Evergreen, necessarily - I meant all the airlines alleged to be CIA fronts, and which I personally had never heard of. As in, not the main commercial airlines. Air America, Air Asia, Golden West Airlines, Southern Air Transport are a few.... the spookiness, the intrigue, Aristide disappearing on a plane....
random source, for silliness and illustration

Aha! I found the Aristide tidbit I'd been looking for:

In the early hours of February 29th 2004, democratically elected President, Jean-Bertrand Aristide and his wife Mildred were forced to leave their home under escort of US military and summarily marched onto an unmarked plane whose destination they did not know and were not told.

source

Can't vouch for the source, but you get the picture and that's common knowledge (that he claimed kidnapping) anyway. It's not actually funny, but I was emphasizing the creepiness of the whole CIA plane thing.

Anyhow, that supertanker seemed really cool. I don't know if it ever got finished or used. That article I linked in Defense Industry Daily talked about how it was an "aerial firefighting modification to the Boeing 747".

Pinal (aka Marana) is a civilian boneyard for retired/repossessed/damaged airliners. The military counterpart is nearby at Davis-Mothan AFB. The low humidity in the desert is perfect for long-term storage.
And as for the reported C-5 at the field, I doubt it. The C-5 empty (basic operating weight) is 374,000 pounds which is double the runway weight bearing capacity. Max takeoff weight, with its 51,000 plus gallons of kerosine is 769,000 pounds. Minimum runway lengthrequirement at ISA (59 deg. F. and sea level) is 6,000 feet. At normal ambient temp and at airport elev. of 1893' MSL, density altitude becomes approx 5000', increasing takeoff distance substantially.
Marana is also reportedly the site for the TSA Air Marshal training facility

When I zoom in full, the area seems deliberately blurred in dark grey not matching the terrain whatsoever. I wonder if this is a Govt. sponsored weapons smuggling program? Destination: Georgia?

Interesting find, thank you!

Zooming in on that area reminds me of the old sewage treatment plants. They use surface treatment for sanitary sewage. Many small towns still use these types of treatment.

Just a guess though.

From the link you provided:

Current usage

Pinal Airpark is the home of Evergreen Aircraft Maintenance Facility and Silverbell Army Heliport (SAHP). The Western Army National Guard Aviation Training Site (WAATS) and other numerous National Guard units are located inside SAHP. The WAATS and is used principally for all ARNG AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter training by the 'Gunfighter University'. It is also extensively used by the British Army for 'Conversion To Role' training for Apache combat operations in Afghanistan. Pinal Airpark also hosts the U.S. Special Operations Command's Parachute Training and Testing Facility.

I doubt it's anything more than that.
If there were anything top secret there, I doubt your friend would tell you the details about being there.

stop that.. truth and logic are NOT allowed here anymore.
haven't you been keeping up with the doom and gloom everyone is gonna die posts?

He could well have been mistaken about the C-5, but I'd like to think a C-5 could get into and out of any airfield that a 747 can - and I believe they fly 747s in and out of there regularly.

I think these planes could be used for spares and repair of units that are in use. To build a part for an existing plane in use, especially if the manufacturers are no longer producing these parts, would be extremely expensive surely.

I work for a major airline who still does it's own maintenance at the largest airline maintenance repair facility in the world under FAR121. *cough * cough.

I've been involved in meetings with reps from Evergreen. My shop has worked on some 727 slats for them (under FAR 145) that Evergreen were selling to someone that still hauls cargo with the 727's. I was involved in the purchase negotiations for a set of over wing slide carriers for the 757 because there are none available in the world except from Evergreen.

These guys are into everything from forestry stuff, to helicopters, to leasing parts out to all major carriers, to selling stuff to the movie industry for them to blow up in a movie. They will not chop their stuff up for scrap metal. They hold on to every single piece. I mean it !

I know absolutely nothing about the facility, sorry.

One of my friends who also went to McMinnville High School, was Del Smiths neighbor and knew when he was out of town. When he was gone, my friend would give the guard dogs hot dogs and go swimming in Del's Pool. I didn't ever get to go...bummer....Del was the richest man in Oregon until the other microsoft guy (not gates, I forget his name) moved to Oregon. He has a really nice air and space museum although he got the state to pay for it, me included, even though he could have afforded to do it himself.
