At least eight people have been killed in a US helicopter raid in eastern Syria, close to the country's border with Iraq, a Syrian official has said. Al-Dunia, a private television channel, said that American helicopters raided the village of Sukariya, which lies 550km northeast of Damascus. "Four American helicopters violated Syrian airspace around 4.45pm local time [13:45 GMT] on Sunday," state television and Sana news agency reported.

The only reason for the attack I can think of is some connection to IEDs. I read before that Syria was one route as well as a manufacturer of them.

Yes, this does seem convenient with McCain lagging in the polls.

I don't think this will work unless Syria retaliates then....

God help us!!

I guess the taliban have moved to syria and have formed their own little tribal lands and the iraqi insurgents keep re-grouping and re-arming using those borders that have very very little security.

Those killed were not civillians, they were families of the the extremist islamic terrorists who want to take over the world. Those kids that were killed were the future suicide bombers. The US should should also bomb all the the madrasas in Syria as they are used by SiraqiBan terrorists.

Oh good lord.

Cant we just round up our leaders and put them in a big arena with some lions or something and let them fight it out?

We could televise it, make some money to pay for all their previous warring.

I am so sick of constant war, and constant threats, and the idiots that start all this crap never get their hands bloody.

Freedom isn't Free , but the US Marines will pay most of the toll.

Do you really believe that overseas military adventures has anything to do with our "freedom"?

if this keeps up random cross border raids and killing civillians in countries they shouldnt be in either the all the islamic nations will unite against america openly or will start arming and possably sending in regular military disguised as insurgents

similar to china sneaking in force to help the vietcong

syria are another allie of russia this isnt really going to help world stability any with all the posturing and name calling already being carried out against iran

the beligerance of the US military is pushing the world into a them v's us standoff, as america's reputation is already flagging in the worlds eyes its entering very risky ground

You do know that the US has been trying to negotiate with the Taliban along with the Afghan government. You do also know that the Taliban is not Al Qaeda right?

And as far as the current reports go, civilians, not radical terrorists were killed.

Even though I do not support the invasions; In some ways I don't blame the troops involved, because in my previous post

"American troops had been chasing Global Jihad suspects in Iraq. The helicopters then crossed into Syria in pursuit of the terrorists. "

If they keep being attacked by fighters who hide in Syria, then they would want to stop them.

Can you imagine if you were chasing them for miles and they crossed the border, how tempting would it be to keep going?

From the BBC

If confirmed, the raid would be the first by US forces inside Syrian territory, says the BBC's Natalia Antelava.

if they cant outrun a bunch of men in the back of a pickup with atatck helicopters or cant hit them with long range fire and forget missles from apaches then really they have no right to be in said helicopters

chances are they wernt activley chasing anyone similar to the pakistan atatcks they think they know where they are so ignore every rule in internation politics and border recognition and go and attack

We can look forward to the stock market falling and oil prices rising due to fears of greater unrest in the middle east and it's effect on our economy due to this incident. I really hope it was worth it instead of just securing the border.

They wont get ugly bro. All Syria has done and will do is protest. They didnt do anything when Israel bombed them last year and they wont do anything now. Basically Syria isnt doing enough to fight the terrorists who run from Iraq back to Syria so the US said they were taking matters in their own hands. Maybe this is a wake-up call for Syria to start taking controll of these Jihadists who are launching attacks into Iraq then fleeing back to Syria unharmed.

The AP has picked this up. No word yet from MSM and no comment from the military. Things are going to get very ugly soon.
