Alaska is another world in itself. I know - I've lived there. I've taught school there. All one needs is a little money to buy silence.

Ive lived in Alaska too. Yes, Alaska is quite different then the lower 48 in many ways. But it has NOTHING to do with this story at all.

Seriously

i'm confused, are you mad at the subject of this thread or the fact that you feel like people aren't posting enough arguments against this story? i don't understand why this isn't something that should be discussed...like you said, people post things all the time that are blatantly false and highly irrelevant, like personal abduction stories, bigfoot sightings, ufo sightings...yet they are still discussed and attempted to be proven true/false. isn't that just what people are doing with this thread? i read all the replies and i certainly didn't think everyone was just agreeing that this was true, i perceived most of the responses to be a "hypothetically if this was true" reaction, or disagreeing entirely.

Do any of you really look at the repercussions these types of rumors or ideas can have on real living and breathing people? Do you truly understand how devastating gossip and rumors are to our culture, our youth, and our nation?

I would say this is one of the biggest issues within our nation today.....gossip and rumors. It is this type of stuff that as a youth pastor I deal with every single day of my life. We reinforce in this nation that rumors and gossip are fun and important.........when all that they do is destroy..........destroy lives.

I can't tell you the number of times I've sat with teens in my office who are absolutely devastated, balling their eyes out because of the terrible nature of rumors and gossip.......and here is our media and us as a nation reinforcing it. We reinforce it every single day. Then we see it in schools. We see it in myspace blogs, we see it in our children as they come home hopeless after an untrue rumor has started about them within our schools, and we see it in suicide notes.

This type of propaganda is absolute rubbish. All sides do it. The media reinforces it.......please, as someone who sees and deals with this every day of my life, don't reinforce gossip and rumors. It is tearing our nation apart.

Let's begin with the 16-year old girl that's being slandered by this thread. She is a real girl, not an abstraction. She is probably excited that her mom was chosen to run for VP. She also has a brother going to Iraq, and a new sibling with Down Syndrome.

I'm sure she has friends in school, and is just trying her best to be a good kid like all the other kids in her high school.

But because her mother has been chosen to be VP people suddenly come out of the woodwork slandering her for no reason other than to disparage her mother.

How do you think this poor girl is going to feel in a couple of days when she realizes she's the subject of internet rumors alleging she left school because she was pregnant?

Did you ever consider this is a real person? She could be your neighbor. She could be YOUR child.

This isn't about bigfoot or a space alien. This is about a normal kid whose life is being degraded for no reason, and certainly for nothing she's ever done to anybody.

Is this really the type of world you want to live in? Where it's fair game to spread unfounded rumors about teenagers getting pregnant just for political sport?

It's totally disgusting and shameful. I would go as far as saying it's borderline evil to spread rumors about this girl, especially when it involves her mother having a baby born with Down Syndrome.

It would honestly be hard for me to imagine how people could possibly sink any lower.

ok i googled that "daily kos" webpage that they claimed was such a big instigator of this, but apparently, they are dispelling it with a neat little graph showing its almost impossible for the 5th kid to be her daughters

heres why

"The chance that a 16-year old girl gives birth to an infant with Down's Syndrome is .1% (or 1 in 1,000).

The chance that a 44-year old woman such as Sarah Palin could give birth to an infant with Down's Syndrome is 3.6%. (or 36 in 1,000).

It is 36 times more likely that the baby is Sarah's and not a 16-year old's"

www.dailykos.com...

i never even heard of the website until this thread, and apparently they are pretty pro-democrat

but they did do a good job dispelling the rumor for me at least
so its settled , the odds of the rumor being true is 36:1

its sad that i had to debunk it myself, where as ppl like jamie just scream up and down how "unfair" it all is, instead of actually taking the time to dig up some legit arguement agianst the claims

Yes, I provided the evidence Debunking it too.

so thats it, rumor dispelled with statistics
game over

and Dont call me a democrat agian, i take that very very badly

I'm not going to take an opinion on this particular case, but using the statistics the way you did, is a complete misrepresentation.

Just because someone is "36 time more likely" to have something happen, doesn't mean the person with the lower percent chance can't have it happen. That's not how statistics like that work. They aren't related to each other at all. It just means that if you put 1000 girls similar to the daughter in a room, one of them would have the baby with ds. If you put 1000 women similar to Gov. Palin in a room, 36 of them would have babies with ds. It doesn't disprove that the daughter could be that one.

I'm not sure your statistics are accurate either. Girls under 18 are at a higher risk for down syndrome. The risk starts higher, goes down, then back up as the women ages.

The rumor didn't start on ATS or even the last few days. This was a rumor that the Palin family has, I'm sure, known about since it started several months ago. They HAD to know that it would get blown up and spread when she became the VP nominee. I'm sure the daughter isn't suddenly suprised to see this on the internet. It's been there for months.

our nation is so different.

i was just thinking about this. many countries have had women leaders, some for hundreds of years. but we think this is some new ground breaking event that we might feasibly have women in the white house as something more than window dressing. it's kinda creepy lol
women can run their homes, balance their checkbooks, shop, fix broken things, fix booboos, run interference on arguments, and multitask to beat the band, in fact, they have more skills related to the type of leadership position we are talking about, than many men but for some reason, we seem to think this is a bad thing. it's not like they get up there and preach a sermon every day. although... in the old testament there was a woman named deborah who lead th e nation of israel and was also their prophet (and ohmyword, she wasn't a bad person either and God doesn't show any indication that He didn't like her or didn't want her in that position. Could it be He actually wanted her to have the job? things that make you go ...hmmm.. and even more amazing, He doesn't infer that she's the whore of babylon, like hillary had to endure repeatedly by some seriously confused people who don't know what the whore of babylon actually is. )

Just providing a photo of Sarah Palin during a previous pregnancy. There is an arguement that maybe she is one of those women that doesn't really "look" pregnant.

I don't have an opinion on this story yet, still researching, waiting for more info to come out, but this undated (yet obviously older) picture atleast tells me that Sarah Palin can look very pregnant.

Palin needs to be a mother and not Vice-President.

She is already in over her head in the mother department.

You'll get a Larry Sinclair sex/drugs admission out of Obama long before she verifies those rumors.

Either way, its in the family and she didn't suggest aborting it -whether or not it is hers or her daughter's. Taking a bullet for the family is quite an honorable thing. I'd lie to save my family any day especially as NOTHING is more important.

Yeah, some people are in over their head in the human being department.

Note to Mods: Just curious. I think I remember something in the TOS about raciist statements being against the rules. Is there a similar rule against sexist statements?

How about Obama needs to be a father and not President.

He is already in over his head in the father department.

Hey that was easy.

This is a tough one for me. I have five kids, volunteer for the PTA, etc, etc,..
I don't think I would be able to be Vice President on top of all that...lol

However, maybe she's a better woman than I am. A few of her kids are almost grown, so it's not like she has five in diapers...

Not sure how I feel about it all....still thinking.

Here's a question to consider. Do you think that if she was a man, with the same resume, credentials, etc.... Do you think she would have made the short list?

Here's a rundown of her resume:
Bachelor's Degree in Communications/Journalism from mid-level college in Iowa or Idaho, can't remember which one.
Stint as sports reporter
4-5 years as Mayor of small town (6000 people at the time)
20 months as Governor of state with 670,000 people...smaller than most large US cities.

Just curious how many of you think that a man with that resume would have been on McCain's shortlist The jury is still out for me.

With all due respect, because you don't know Sarah Palin you are missing the point. it's not about her credentials alone, it's about HER. She's is smart, well-spoken, hard-working, and willing to take on any status quo to get the job done and do what's right.

When Chuck Noll was the coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers he used to talk about drafting the best athlete available rather than trying to fill a position. He won 4 Super Bowls in 6 years with this philosophy.

Sarah Palin is the best person McCain could have selected. She is more of a leader than Romney, Pawlenty, Hutchinson, or any of the others on the "short list." She is a success story that all Americans should be proud of. In fact, I think Obama might have said something similar about her.

just a couple of points :

1 - there have been RARE but confirmed cases of women not being aware that they were infact preagnant untill the onset of labour [ and i am not talking ` state of denial ` or other such refusals to face facts ]

2 - if they indeed ` hatched a plan ` to cover up the daughters pregnancy and claum that gov. plain was preagnent , why did they not plann it fully from day one ?

the news reports claim that the daughter ` disapeared ` for months - a plausible nessecasry step to prevent anyone knowingf that she was pregnant

that requires pre planning - why did they not announce that mrs palin [ the govenor ] was preagnant right there and then ? and maintain the charade ??

they could have used prostetics etc etc

and the birth , if the ` official line ` is a fabrication - its a bloody retarded and over complex one with too many things to go wrong

what if the plane carrying gov palin was forced to make an emergency landing @ seattle or vancouver ???

if hey planned it - they should have just had gov palin drop out of sight for a few days at the ` correct time ` and re emerge with baby - simple , fool proof

**Don't attack someone's young kids - it just ain't right.**

Where do you see the OP attacking the child?
You don't.
Take a chill pill.

Nothing wrong with a Grandmother raising a grandchild as her own you say?

If it's based all on lies and cover-up - yes, it is a great wrong.
Not only for the family, public, but especially the child.

What child would want to grow up as the families *dirty little secret*?

And what does it teach her own daughter other than *Mommy will make it all better*, cover it up, lie about it, make the whole family life a lie. Where is teaching a daughter responsibility in that?

If she can justify herself into making a lie her own grandchild, she can make a lie and justify anything.
