The default position for myths is to consider them stories until supporting evidence is found.

The alternative position to assume all myths are true until proven wrong isn't really feasible.

Where it gets messy is when there is some kernel of historical fact blended in with mythology.

Homer's Iliad and the Old Testament immediately come to mind.

The requirement to separate fact from fiction is a relatively new development in human storytelling. Whatever made it more dramatic was considered an added bonus. And when stories were just passed on orally, there was no way of going back to the original source.

Human nature being what it is, colourful embellishments were inevitable.
