NATO considering actions against Russia since Georgia is a tight member of the NATO and partner for Peacemembership.

NATO can suck on its thumb and should focus on cheer at the Olympics instead. No one wants NATO in this, including European NATO members. If U.S.'s hands are twiching to get involved in the bloodshed, it can do it alone, and suffer the consequences alone.

Georgia is not a "tight member" of NATO, or any kind of member of NATO. Georgia is run by a hotheaded dictator with a downs syndrome, who is bitterly opposed by 75% of his country. That puppet will have his strings cut one by one if he keeps up his bloody adventure.

And the only "peace" Georgia supports, is peace through bombardment. Kind of like U.S. ideas of bringing peace to the Middle East through war. Get some background info on the conflict before saying that NATO will step in for Georgia. I am sure the French and Germans will just love to drop threir croissants and head for the Caucasus mountains to be beheaded by guerilla fighters.

NATO will not interfere in this, but this indeed becomes a full blown war and invasion as it appears, then Russia will be in the same position as the USA. If the war becomes prolonged, it will not help their nation continued resurgance

ok. so what is exactly going on if they are killing each other, shooting each others planes down, bombing air fields, and other war like actions???

Simple - Russia is neutralizing Georgian aggresive capabilities. Russia has only engaged those Georgian units and airfields which have been involved in staging the attack on South Ossetia.

If Russia trully wanted to "invade" Georgia it would bomb Tbilisi and send in 15,000 armored vehicles and heavy artillery units instead of 150.

Russia has enough forces in North Caucasus to completely decapitate Georgian military and government within 24 hours and occupy the entire country within 3 weeks, if it wished to do so. Much of those troops have been ordered to stand down.

I quite agree. In addition to guerillas they would obviously have to face Russian regulars, some of which had been battle-hardened in Chechnya. Bloody mess!

Oh and by the way... natural gas would magically stop flowing to Western Europe... No croissants...

17:40 South Ossetia appeals to international community to recognize its independence

From Interfax.com

I am reminded of Mr. Putin's speech just before the unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia. He said that Kosovo would set a precedent that would give the impression that violence and ethnic separation can help a group gain independence.

Since February when Kosovo became "independent" (more like a protectorate), we have seen a rise in violence in other regions that wish independence.

Now how can the West explain their stance? They opened Pandora's Box and now we start seeing the results. Even though S. Ossetians have wanted independence for years they knew is was a very hard dream to achieve. Now the West must come up with new arguments if they still want to deny these people what they want.

I would think the U.S. gets into many more fights the draft will HAVE to be reinstated. I don't see anyway they can do more fighting without more men
and women.
That's more money and men and women and for what?....oil?

CNN is running this story, evacuation of 2,000 Americans out of Georgia might be coming soon.

Iraq...Afghanistan.....maybe Iran.....and now this...what's next?

For all these BILLIONS we could have built a wall around the whole U.S. with
signs......Keep out!!!

It's so obvious how the American main media is handling this. they were in a total blackout regarding the early actions of ally-Georgia. But as soon as Russia start sending tanks and troops- the American media coverage is starting to pick up- of course- depicting the Russians as the aggressor- Russia is an ally of Iran- China is an iranian ally- and little firecracker georgia is US ally. you can see where this is going. incredible. neocons behind it

This is ridiculous. Bush has already been in talks with your new 'guy' and from the get go request immediate cease fire on both sides. check any news website with the story. They were at the Games together...

www.foxnews.com
www.cnn.com
www.abcnews.com

We have all already played this game, nobody wants to stir up Russia's military, especially Georgia. What is Georgia going to do if Russia really wants to stomp in? which they don't. I am pretty much a believer that Russia is trying to stick it's chest out on the opening of the olympics to try and say "hey world" remember us...

As well as the fact that Georgia is claiming Russia fired first.

This is just pure half sided propaganda.

The Russian's 'new guy' is just looking for a little street cred...

www.reuters.com...

WASHINGTON, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said on Friday that Russia was fighting a war with his country and that Georgians were "looking with hope" to America, but he did not specifically appeal for U.S. help.

"Russia is fighting a war with us in our own territory."

Well the Georgian President said it himself, russia is at war with them.

Further more:

Saakashvili, whose country is pushing to join NATO, said the conflict "is not about Georgia anymore. It's about America, its values."

"I ... thought that America stands up for those freedom-loving nations and supports them. That's what America is all about. That's why we look with hope at every American," the U.S.-educated president said.

It looks like Georgian wants the US to take their side desperately.

Also- just overheard on CNN they are evac'ing over 2000 US personal from Georgia.

Oh my - if Bush is calling for cease fire I guess we can brand him the "Great Peacekeeper". If you read the background to this build-up to war that has been happening for the last 5 years, you will see that U.S. gave Georgia a blind approval to invade South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and Condoleeza Rice approved Georgia's mobilization to start the hostilities.

Bush's talks are nothing but a PR stunt. U.S. is well knows for these moronic PR stunts, which have been held between Israel and Arabs, and Serbs and NATO before. This is a joke, and those who do not realize that it is need to get a crash course in international politics. Everyone is trying to spin this conflict to their advantage, including U.S. which played a major role in starting it. Meanwhile civilians are being slaughtered in South Ossetia by Georgian forces armed with guns and ammo given to them by U.S.

So the only "ridiculous" thing here - is the absolute lack of knowledge on the part of most Americans about this conflict, its background, and America's role in it.

Damn, well thanks for reminding me where Americans get their news. If these websites are all you have to go by, then I honestly feel sorry for you.

How about you check Itar-Tass, Rosbalt news, and RIA News for an alternative view at the events. Just type these sources' names into google, and you will discover that there is a whole new media world out there besides the American free press.

Each side has propaganda and adds their own twist, but if you are a slight bit intelligent you can put ying and yang together and figure out what is going on in reality.

Which is exactly what Georgia has done. Russians had the first casualties of the war, after the surprise Georgian artillery barage.

Go and cry to their master - U.S. (or should I say Pentagon).

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. That doesn't mean that some people's opinions are not backed up by any facts. Sadly - a large percentage of Americans share your opinion, which gives a really bad picture of Americans's [mis]perceptions of what is going on in the world.

It is fashionable to point fingers at Russia, and very easy to do. It is much harder to monitor events like this for months beforehand and interpret the situation based on numerous sources from each side involved.

Georgia is known for ubiquitous and fascinating claims which make its government appear to be even more dumb than it really is. Georgia has made so many claims in recent years against Russia which were proved by UN to be false, that earlier this year UN stopped investigating these claims altogether (after Georgia claimed Russia bombed them and even found a neat hole dug in the groud where Russia supposedly tried to destroy Georgian goat-pasture assets).

You are the one who listed fox news, cnn, and abc as the valuable sources of insight on this conflict.

Their insight is about as good and useful as Putin's personal insight on Obama's sex life. Let fox news and cnn focus on Obama - they are much better at that than focusing on world news.

Bush on the other hand has got all the street cred he needs. Sadly America got the same street cred - if you see U.S. coming, better cross the street and arm yourself to the teeth.

'I declare a total mobilization. Everyone must appear at the recruiting point,' he said.

With the president pushing for mobilization, I cannot be optimistic in the future events that will occur later today and this weekend.

They are withdrawing their 1000 forces from iraq to help fight off the russians.

www.reuters.com...

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian soldiers now in the South Ossetian capital say their artillery has begun firing at Georgian forces - the first confirmed engagement between the two countries' troops, Russian agencies reported.

So it is easy to see how fast this is escalating. Although it can be avoided, so much could go wrong from now to then.

Aug. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said ``war has started'' over the breakaway region of South Ossetia as Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili accused its neighbor of a ``well-planned invasion.''

Both presidents have stated that they are at war now.

I don't see how you justify that the USA has something to do with this.

Also, I am so sick of people saying we have not won the war in Iraq. We squashed the Iraqi government and military in record time.

We also wiped out the Taliban ran Government in Afghanistan very quickly. Something no one else seemed to be able to do.

We are fighting with one had tied behind are back in Iraq now. That is the problem.
