The cam sometimes turns itself over, I've noticed.

I can't believe it's an artpiece not a real satellite cam! Oh man, that is really depressing. I had never heard about it before tonight, and thought it was such a cool idea

I'm way more disappointed to be had about that than that there won't be a 2000-mile UFO showing up

Oops, forgot to post what I was going to say. This was the best I could do with getting both right and left side in the screen. I don't see anything at all on the right, and I couldn't get the earth higher up in the picture.

This webcam is located on the current Tate Satellite in orbit.

It is sending images to your browser live, in realtime.

This powerful wide angle webcam developed in collaboration with University College London enables a broad viewing range. Currently the webcam is focussed on our own planet, earth. You may take control of the webcam using the pan and zoom controls above.

How it works

The webcam takes a still every 30 seconds which is then sent to the server. Depending on network traffic the webcam image on your browser should update at approximately 30 second intervals. (if after 40 seconds the image has not refreshed then please press the refresh or reload button on your browser toolbar). It takes a minimum of 20 seconds for the camera to respond to your instructions, and it may take up to a minute for you to see the resulting pan, or zoom.

The camera receives instructions from all viewers collectively. The resulting pan and zoom takes into account all instructions received. If more than one viewer sends an instruction simultaneously the instructions will be queued. This custom camera technology is still in development so on occasion you may get glitching. If this persists, please email [email protected] with the subjectline 'fault' and a description of the problem you are experiencing.

The satellite is orbiting at approx 400km from earth in a polar to polar orbit. The satellite orbits earth every 92.56 mins. It has been engineered to cover the globe in 15.56 orbits - 1 day. For more information on when the satellite might be visible from where you are click here.

Information can be transmitted almost instantaneously to a ground station via telemetry. The live webcam works in this way, with webcam instructions sent via the internet to the ground station and from there to the Satellite. Images from the webcam are in turn sent to the ground station and from there via the internet to your web browser.

so this is not real? pffft......

Ahh thanks for the clarification.

Well, I think I'll leave this whole thing alone now. I've been skeptical about it, but I held hope just because it would have been so awesome.

If anything came out of this, it'd be that my partner and I now need chiropractic work done to fix our sore necks. The night sky truly is beautiful and at least for a time there, the stars got the attention they deserved all over the world.

Keep watching the skies, regardless of intergalactic visitors!

I hate to be a party pooper

Tate in Space

This is an art work - the clue was it's on the website of the Tate art gallery!

Also if the satellite was 400 km high I'm pretty sure the earth wouldn't look that small.

Oh yeah and it would also look like the earth not a painting.

edit to fix url

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA OMG I am literally laughing so dang hard....

I have an excuse though as I am blonde

besides which it IS better than watching the really bad movie my SO is watching...

So...we've gone from performance art (Blossom Goodchild) to Spacial/Social Art (Tate webcam)....have we missed anything?

It's only 10:30 PST here so it's not totally over (he he he)

Well you could add in the middle of those two about the NY cam everyone was gawking over earlier. There was some blue and red lights that just turned out to be a reflection... but boy did those lights LIGHT up the forum here for awhile LOL then there was other lights after ( once it got dark ) and someone pointed out how many airports are in the area and they are all viewing aircraft flying by. Course, that might of taken up 20+ pages of the forum easy, if not more!

IMO more comical then this new space cam they are talking about.

Ok now I am starting to get angry. Now that I think of it, I will never get the hours back of my life that I wasted on this thread.

HOAX ART. I already posted my good ol fashioned hoax craft over NZ pic, and I keep seeing those " DONT YOU DARE BE A SMART ALEC" Posts from the mods, sooo........

BTW- the tate cam being art- that burns me up. I really DO like seeing the planet from out there.... but for pity's sake.....
REAL, please. I cannot believe I just tried to match a real space simulator, that works in real time to an art piece.

That explains Tate then. I was runnign through my mind how it managed to allow "control", I was gussing towards some form of camera array which allowed images reflecting the requested angle to be shown.

I guess that explains all my concerns over the camera and how its seeing things its should be seeing

For the last time its fake Tate.

Of course the site is illusory. If Tate really had launched its own Satellite, you can be sure that it would have been front-page news in all the world’s press. Yet Collins has elected to give the site as much authority as possible. Fiction has always played a big part in the artist’s work, but with this project she has excelled herself, creating a fake component of a real organisation with all the trappings of authenticity.

I beg the differ actually, while not with concise proof or anything...
From east TN myself and my friend both clearly saw a cluster of flickering lights, they themselves, under the power of a telescope proved to be small clusters of three lights, oscillating red, blue, and white in a generally stable, yet often changing pattern.
They eventually formed something like a long, short cross...

*

*

Something like this.
The brightest ones were the ones on either far side, being more vividly flashing, and being the primary source of the pattern I spoke about earlier, the center three easily resembled a vertical and wildly low version of Orion's belt [to give you an idea of formation.].

So just chiming in, anyone else see them?
I also had some friends in the upper altitudes of western NC see them too, if that helps.

Don't feel bad. It happened to many of us.
It's just sad how many hoaxes are going around these days. Whatever the motivation, whether they call it a social art project or global consciousness enlightenment via alien channelling, a hoax is still a hoax and it hurts many people in the process. I only hope that for humanity's sake the victims come out wiser than they went in. When progress comes from regret, it raises the level of one's common sense up a notch.

there we go
now you see

Ok. I see them but they are round and apparently the tate in space is not real...The description on the site sure makes it sound that way though!

I love the new title to this thread:

[HOAX]GFL spaceship DID NOT APPEAR on Oct.14th, 2008 FRAUD?[HOAX and YES... FRAUD]

I suggested HOAX earlier in the day but this is waaay better.
Once again, thank you ATS staff.

Hey, I see we got upgraded to [HOAX] tagging.

I've gotta admit, it's a pretty clever idea for an art installation, the Tate thing. I'm just disappointed because I thought it was so cool.

Yes! I realize it is fake now! But the way it was described on the site made it sound real....But yeah the control issue is a very good point. That should have been a major clue that it couldn't be real! LOL! Duh!

Extremely well said!
That's one of the brightest observations I've seen on this site in a very long time!

(and now I'll give you attention with a star!)
