Putin Calls U.S. 'Frightening Monster,' Urges French Solidarity

www.bloomberg.com

May 31 (Bloomberg) -- Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin compared the U.S. to a ``frightening monster'' and urged France to distance itself from its American ally.

``How can one be such a shining example of democracy at home and a frightening monster abroad?'' Putin said in an interview with French newspaper Le Monde transmitted live to journalists in Paris yesterday.

Putin, speaking the day after meeting French President Nicolas Sarkozy, said the U.S. was creating ``new Berlin Walls'' in Europe by pushing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to expand into ex-Soviet states Georgia and Ukraine.

So which is it? The US on the verge of collapse because of the falling dollar and the Iraq war? But now its somehow gaining strength? Sounds more to me like you'll post anything as long as it serves your ignorant anti-us agenda.

Give me a break. Expanding NATO isn't a bad thing, imperialistic, or monstrous in any way. These countries WANT to be part of NATO to be protected from the possibility of Putin and his thugs taking them over again.

This reminds me of when Putin was whining about the missile DEFENSE system to be put in Poland. If he wasn't planning on the possibility of sending missiles into Poland, what would he care if there was a missile defense system.

Coming from Putin, this is hypocrisy on the highest order.

Tell us again why the US goverment was whining about not wanting Russia to have its own missle defense system in Cuba.

You will find that through out the years, we have been nothing but hypocritical ourselves. I wouldn't be so fast to point the finger, if I were you.

This is a clear warning, and just the latest in a series of them coming from both Russia and China. It’s becoming ever more obvious that our two largest rivals, who just happen to be allies now, are telling US that they’ll not take much more. Attacking Iran will be one step beyond, IMO.

edit for usual stuff

Except for the part about "democracy at home"---The states is starting to resemble more of a fascist police state domestically by the day. But on foreign policy, he's right on--Our gov has become the biggest terrorists on the planet.

Wow
Putin must have looked into Bush's soul!

Interesting that Putin met with Nicolas Sarkozy, at the non-presidential level as stated in the story.

Actually, remote viewing into Bush's soul was probably not how he came to his conclusion. The US has been known for using its military power/dollars to help keep the world safe for its corporations. And going into Iraq with guns blazing, "to spread democracy" was not our most shining moment.
As elections turn out politicians, we should send them off with caps emblazoned with Rats Love Me, Fish Fear Me, as a fitting retirement gift.

I must have missed this in all the knee-jerk, anti-U.S. posts.

How exactly is allowing ex-Soviet states into NATO monstrous or imperialistic? Does anybody actually read the linked articles?

Really? How do you figure that one? I live in Chicago and am downtown daily for work. Haven't seen any cops out stopping people to check there papers, haven't had any restrictions on my travel. So please do tell me how my state is becoming more facist by the day. I look forward to having a good laugh.

Putin is paranoid. First of all, the majority of Americans do not support much of our corporate actions overseas, nor do they support much of our foreign policies. The executive branch often works independently of what most people even realize. The Bush administration did not accomplish what it had hoped for from the start...and although they generated plenty of jobs from the Iraq war it failed to bring economic prosperity for most Americans, which means the objective was not met. Now...it is no surprise that his ratings have dropped dramatically. Even the military has had its qualms with the current administration. I don't understand why people try to paint the United States as one 'frightening monster' as said by Putin...the U.S. isn't like Nazi Germany by any means...people should get a grip on reality..

Please provide a link to this. I am not aware of the US whining about a Russian missile defense system in Cuba. I am aware of Russia trying to place nuclear missiles in Cuba in the Cuban Missile Crisis, but those were not "defense missiles" by any stretch of anyone's outlandish imagination.

And as for the article itself, I didn't read anywhere in there where the US is forcing any country to join NATO. In fact I haven't ever heard of the US forcing any country to join NATO or threaten any country that wants to leave NATO. Quite the opposite of the old Warsaw Pact. And wasn't it Russia that shot down a Georgia UAV over land that belongs to Georgia? Talk about an aggressive monster using force to coerce countries.

Just ask the poor people of Chechyna that are suffering because of Russian aggression. A country (Russia) that has lead the international way of aggression since the end of WWII. The country that built the Berlin Wall in the first place. Held Eastern Europe hostage, attacked countries like Afghanistan for no reason. Caused the Nuclear Arms Race.

Now Putin, the dictator in training for Russia is just talking to help justify his takeover of Russia, and is just putting his KGB training to use.

I've been Googling this for a while now and haven't come up with any trace of a Russian plan to put a missile defense system in Cuba.

So I'm calling bu!!$hit!!!

Show me a link or something about a Russian missile defense system being proposed in Cuba. It doesn't really make sense.

I checked your links.

No, the U.S. is not a facist state. Try applying the same criteria to Iran or to the Palestinians then get back to me on how many points they get.

Well according to that BS the whole world fits the bill as being Fascist.

Sorry but what is stated there does not match reality here. Despite the propaganda being spewed at these opinion sites, the reality is simply this, the US is no more Fascist now, then in the days after WWII.

I want to know exactly which of my rights have been lost and exactly how the US is now a Fascist country. Because it is not happening here.

You guys are either disinfo bloggers, or flat out in denial...Anyone and everyone here besides you gov guys KNOWS what is being done to us---The farcical electorals, corporate protectionism and controlled media, Warrantless spying on citizens, croneyisms of the majority of the SCOTUS and other key departments, etc., etc., etc.,

You want to pretend it doesn't exist, knock yourselves out...I see with my own two eyes what is happening to me and those around me.

Thanks.

I do believe a simple search on ATS will show you discussions on a new copyright law. There is also talk of a new law that passes that lets any HARD DRIVE be inspected in airports as national security. Both topics were on the front page of ATS within the last week.

I swear for "intelligent" peoples, you all write off # so damn fast. Sure most of the mumbo jumbo about little green men and the end of the world may be a stretch of the imagination, but for you to sit here and claim that over the last 8 years the us has not gone down hill as far as personal rights are concerned is shocking.

I mean....does the Patriot Act mean nothing to you people? Privacy is a right. Not feeling like your phone, your computer, and everything else around you is bugged is a right, that we no longer have. How about facebook sharing information with the gov?

I don't care what you want to believe. It is FACT that things have been changed, or taken away from us, so that now the general public has far less of a voice than ever before. If that doesn't frighten you, then you obviously are one of those that wants the power.

PS - Why as my capta message just now "irancontra" iran contra.....kinda funny.
